Brian Linehan's City Lights

Brian Linehan's City Lights

8 жыл бұрын

In this interview form 1974, 27 year old Martin Short talks about Second City, his degree in social work and performing in Toronto's Godspell in 1972 with Eugene Levy, Victor Garber, Gilda Radner and Andrea Martin. He also discusses his character Johnny Del Bravo in The David Steinberg Show, performing in the play Not Enough Rope and his admiration of Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, John Candy and James Dean. He answers some of Brian's questions as Katharine Hepburn.
From 1974 to 2000, Canada’s Brian Linehan conducted thousands of in-depth interviews with the greatest actors and directors from over 60 years of film history. His programs City Lights and Linehan have not been seen since they first aired and are now available for the first time for licensing. Linehan, a stylishly gifted broadcaster, meticulously did all his own research and that, coupled with his knowledge and passion about film and filmmaking, puts him in a class all by himself.
With 20,000 hours of music footage spanning 90 years and thousands of hours of in-depth interviews with the 20th century’s icons of Film and Television, Politics, Comedy, Literature, Art, Science, Fashion and Sports, Reelin’ In The Years Productions is now the World’s Premier Source For Footage Of Musical Artists, Entertainers & History Makers.

Brian Linehan, who passed away in 2004, left his entire estate to The Brian Linehan Charitable Foundation to provide training, work opportunities and promotion for young actors of exceptional talent. All of the income of his Foundation is donated to not-for-profit institutions for that purpose. In the decade since his death, recipients of the Foundation’s support have included extraordinary young actors affiliated with the Canadian Film Centre, The National Screen Institute of Canada, the Stratford Shakespearean Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, which, since Brian's passing, has preserved and housed Brian's personal archive and tape library.

Isn't the internet just the best? This is absolutely incredible. Can you believe it? Young Marty Short, so composed and green and scared stiff! Ha! You know, he talks about how nervous he was and the stage fright he had in the early years and I just don't see it. Was he talking about when he was 12? It would be hard to tell though, he looks 12 in THIS interview! Hey!

My God! I've always thought Martin was attractive throughout his entire career. I am rather in love with him and his work almost to a level of obsession...lol. But wow! I've never seen this or seen him this young and what a gorgeous smile, those lips and those eyes and I always love to hear him talk. He's such a great story teller. We should have seen much more of Martin Short throughout the decades, and the entertainment business should have shown him more love and definitely given him so much more credit. He is a comedic genius!

I'll never forget how great Martin Short's character "Brock Linehan" was on SCTV--it was a spoof of the late Brian Linehan-only Brock Linehan's research on all his guests was completely wrong and they would laugh at him for how bad he was--apparently, Brian Linehan felt insulted by the spoof (I guess his ego couldn't handle it)--however, the late Alex Trebek absolutely loved Eugene Levy's spoof of him on "Half Wits" ("Alex Trebel") and other game shows that SCTV spoofed
@jamesanthony5681
@jamesanthony5681 3 жыл бұрын
Martin Short said years later (on Linehan's show) that the spoof was done out of love and friendship for his friend, Brian Linehan; however, when Short saw that the TV writer Martin Knelman of the Globe and Mail was using that sketch to criticize and belittle Linehan, Short stopped doing the character altogether out of respect for his friend.

Brian Linehan appeared on *The Alan Hamel Show* (from Vancouver) around 1979, and when asked by Hamel what Hollywood stars disappointed him, Linehan replied (paraphrasing somewhat), 'Elliot Gould. I cannot understand his popularity/appeal. He's a whiny actor with that voice of his......' At the time I almost fell out of my chair thinking Great!, finally some real honesty instead of the usual, 'everyone is so fabulous, blah, blah.' Well, about a year or so later, Elliot Gould appeared on City Lights, Linehan's talk show from Toronto, and Brian went into his long preamble, sucking up to Gould with (again, paraphrasing), "A broadway star since the early '60's. The star of such movies as M*A*S*H, The Long Goodbye, Nashville, and now starring in his new movie -------, .....welcome, Elliot Gould." Linehan was all smiles, Gould I believe thanked him, but Elliot had a look on his face that told me he had seen that Hamel guest spot appearance.
