I live in the village only a few minutes from Murrays home, and often saw him out and about in real life. And he was a true gentleman to little kids who recognised him, old fashioned ladies first, holding doors open, and on a personal level, as being disabled and having mobility issues, he would step aside and give me an encouraging nod and smile. For a world wide sports celebrity he was an unassuming, classic english gent in his local comunity, and never carried airs or graces. As a local figure, by god i will miss the man.

I remember at 13 I was having a horrid time, I had no friends, no motivation and no interest in anything. Then i randomly put on a grand prix. Think it was France in 95, there in 90 minutes I got hooked due to Murray Walkers enthusiasm . 25 years on, I am still hooked. I never met Murray Walker but he came across as a genuine, honest human being and in some ways helped me gain a passion for a sport that has not gone. As Martin says I wish we could just say Sir Murray and I really hope in Bahrain in 2 weeks we get an appreciation there.

I was always a big BTCC fan from very young - so for me, thats what i remember the most. But also as a massive F1 fan and Motorbike fan - I love the fact he followed club level races - all the way up to the top. He could spot a talented driver from 1000 miles away. Yet would travel the country to follow them and see how well they did every weekend. He really is British Motorsport from club level to world champion. I will really miss him. Thank you Murray.

So many great memories of watching F1 with Murray commentating. One of my personal favourites was a scene with Hakkinen making a pass on someone. The pass was replayed immediately and Murray says “and Hakkinen passes him AGAIN!!!” To which Martin said “it’s a replay Murray” flatly. Only Murray could make a mistake like that so endearing. Martin was also a gentleman as the straight man to Murray’s over the top, speak before you think style of enthusiasm.

I'm honestly so happy that a passionate, friendly and down-to-earth guy like Murray got to live his long life fulfilling his dreams and work with his passion. He lived a great life and we should celebrate that. Rest in peace Murray Walker.

Thanks boys a heartfelt tribute to the indomitable Murray . My earliest memories are his commentary for motorbike scrambling on BBC Grandstand in the early 60's in the days of Arthur Lampkin and Dave Bickers ! Happy days ! RIP Murray ,a job well done !

Well said gentlemen. Met Murray when he signed my copy of his autobiography. He spent time talking to every single person there despite the attempts to speed things up. As you said he wanted to know about you. What your thoughts of the current F1 were. He was more interested in that than telling you about himself.

Oh man, "that's not the programme we have for you tonight" - almost verbatim how Steve Rider introduced the 'highlights' of Imola '94. Good touch, really conveys the gravity of Murray's passing. So sad, he was so unerringly joyful.
