It's funny how life works... I saw this guy YEARS ago working on jeeps. I was a jeep dodge anything. Today, I bought a 99 WJ 4x4 because of watching his video yesterday. Come to find out, I was told by someone today that it was the best decision ever made... I highly agree. Thank YOU Martin

Hey Martin, good video again. I just finished on my Jeep WK 4.7 doing the CAI install for mine and I already had a full exhaust (looking for headers though, custom or otherwise) and after just testing the Jeep around the corner and back down the road, it really has helped the Jeep to be faster and louder, especially at start-up. Not that I care for the sound being louder but it really doesn't sound like it did when I bought it. My project has been taking me awhile so the more I do the more I'll upload too.

Very tempting to do. Gotta say, I'd probably do a bit more fabrication, however. Such as building my own box out of sheet metal and making the inside a bit more conducive for airflow, as this method does leave some areas that surely don't do you any favors in getting air to the TB. Regardless, this is incredibly resourceful and I never would've thought to do this. Outstanding job my friend.

Great job Martin! Enjoy watching you take something and completely modify it to work as if it was made for it. Something cool to add to this project......make a polished aluminium grill for the front of that scoop to stop birds or large debris from entering into the scoop. Something to match the 7 slot grill would be awesome! I used a large hole mesh on my project that worked but wasn't pretty. It did help with the front of the scoop, keeping its form and not dipping down in the middle. Over time, heat will cause this. The mesh kept it square and true. Either way, nice project!!

There's no way mounting any type of electric fan in or in front of an air intake that will add more air or give you any benefit. There are a few videos out there where they attempted this even to the point where they are mounting half a dozen leaf blowers that pushed a 110 MPH air and yielded absolutely nothing

Martin, have you been to 'AIR RAM PERFORMANCE' and checked out some of their mods? They have an intake conversion plates from 4.7L to 4.6L that allow you to physically mount up the Eaton Supercharger from a 2003-2004 FORD COBRA to a 2006 H/O 4.7L engine... or any other aftermarket ford product. Now that would be a mod to behold on the Grand Cherokee!

I love it but what about the filter getting.soaked every time there is a heavy rain.I would be tempted to make a baffle suspended above the filter leaving an air gap.with edges extended beyond the perimeter of the filter directing all the water away from it.Your design and use of materials already on the vehicle are genius.I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota with same engine.I may.be headed to a junk yard to get an extra airbox and intake silencer to fab this up without taking the one currently on my truck off that way I can take my time.I was already planning on a hood scoop.Awesome work.

Ive been looking at my IAT readings with the stock setup and it reads on average 15c above ambient temp. I note you have the IAT in the airbox and not the stock position. Im considering doing the air scoop but not sealing it and using a foam pod filter. This is because I drive off road. I would like to mount a trans cooler where the old airbox was. Just thoughts at this stage.

Thanks for the great video. Could you please tell me if you have noticed any increase in power and fuel consumption after installing this mod? Also, how does it perform if you're driving in heavy rain - do the drains cope? I live in Zimbabwe and am a bit worried about water getting into my air intake with some of the heavy downpours we have here.
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of these mods like this one it's hard to tell if you had a increase in power. Really needs to be put on a dyno with a before-and-after . I do believe I got something out of it. So far every mod I've done on this engine I have seen an increase in MPG. I have driven it in a very severe downpour it did have me worried but never did it give me any problem. I got to say if I lived in a rainy environment it would concern me.

@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 6 жыл бұрын
Antonio Leon thank you, I didn't do nothing to stop the rain from entering the throttle body. I did install the drain lines which takes care of the heavy rain. You got to remember water injection has been around for a lot of years. It doesn't hurt the engine at all and doesn't affect how the engine operates you can't even tell when driving in the rain. You're actually steam cleaning your engine when you're taking in a little water. Of course you wouldn't want to throw a bucket of water into the ram air that would definitely hydraulic the engine.

@@martinbuilt I had a hood made. The body shop lent me a cutter so I did it at their shop, cut the hole out and when the body shop mounted the scoop they put it a little to far back so I don't have as much air coming in as I'd intended but it looks great and it does increase the power and the sound is great, thank you for the great idea. I don't know if anyone else has done your mod and then sent you a video, but here you go. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKx2ppB-vqu7lmw.html

Martin I know this an older mod but I have a question regarding the functionality of this air ram during rain. See I live in a northern climate where it tends to rain and snow ... would water infiltrate the intake and possible combustion chambers?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 4 жыл бұрын
When it rains some water would be drawn into the engine but, that's not really a bad thing. That would be like steam cleaning the combustion chamber. You have heard of water injection before same thing. Of course, you don't what a large amount of water this could cause the engine to hydraulic. I'm talking about a mist of water. I have driven it in a heavy downpour before and never had a problem. I also have those drain lines for any large amount of water.

Hey Martin is that hood scoop flush on the surface of the hood or did you do some slight modification to the scoop or hood to get it to look so nice? I’ve seen a lot of reviews and mustang owners complain it’s not flush against the hood.
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 3 жыл бұрын
I made some slight mods to the scoop but would like to do it again. The heat out here changes how it lays on the hood.

At 18:40 you were refitting a piece that you cut to fill the gap. Why not use something like Flex Seal or pour a epoxy resin to smooth the finish. Which epoxy resin will be resistant to cleaning products for the throttle body?

Has this changed or affected your performance at all? In terms of performance would you recommend a ram air set up like this, or a cold air intake?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 6 жыл бұрын
Justin Denis I feel it has improved that performance. It's something you really need to stick on a Dyno though. Well if you're willing to cut a hole in your hood and install a hood scoop in my opinion that's the way to go. Installing a cold air intake would be a lot easier.

I’m building a box like you did in this Video but I’m am wondering! How did you Decide on how wide to cut the hole in your roof was it off the filter or the inside of the frame of the box?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 5 жыл бұрын
I made it large enough that any part of the Ram Air that went through the hood did not come in contact with the hood. At least 1/2" or 13mm minimum clearness. The engine does move from side to side a slight amount. Also, the engine is not mounted right in the middle, it is 5/8" to the right.
@barrynorris6346
@barrynorris6346 5 жыл бұрын
martinbuilt so the 1/2” is the space between the hood and the box? Is that correct?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 5 жыл бұрын
@@barrynorris6346 when I first built the Box part of it would protrude through the hood so I had to leave room because of engine movement. If none of it comes through the hood you only need to make it as large as the filter opening. There is definitely more than half an inch from the aluminum plate to the top of the bottom side of the hood
