How to fix the problem with condensation in the engine oil and the freezing of the breather tube to the PCV valve. This happens more often in colder climates especially in temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 below Celsius. Condensation in the oil fill tube in high humidity parts of the country is also common. In 2007 the problem was fixed by moving the PCV valve to the rear left cylinder head from its previous location on the oil fill tube.
Here is a link to a TSB from Chrysler to how to fix the problem on older models dodgeram.info/tsb/2006/25-001-...

First and Foremost, thank God we've got people like you whom take the time too make these awesome videos and for that I'd like too thank you...I've spent quite a bit of time watching your videos over and over as I've battled my 02 WJ 4.7 over the last 5 years of owning it....First it was the cooling system the Jeep Went through 4 T-Stats, Water pump then after I got that mostly sorted I kept getting misfires on #2 plus had a few spark plugs get eaten..I replaced coils but no luck and it took me a year to find out that my H- Balancer was the problem when it finally exposed itself one day due to the rubber on the balancer stretching from it creating a ticking noise as it ran...My local shop wanted $800 to repair so me and my good friend did the work and since the Hydraulic unit had to come out I decided to swap in a new Denso radiator while in there..Your video helped alot with that job..Now I'm gathering the rest of the parts to due your PCV mod since it get cold in Kentucky and I've found the crud underneath my oil cap and in the filler tube..Also fot all the parts too do the hydraulic lash adjusters swap along with new VCG's...Was wondering if your running oils High in Zinc for the Hydraulic tappets and if so what brands ?

Thank you for the kind words I do appreciate that. I just use Mobil One with Marvel Mystery Oil or Rislone. The zinc additive is for hydraulic or solid tappets that make contact with the cam lobe.

Great video as always, been following your 4.7 videos from the beginning and it’s helped me so much the 4.7 is over looked it can rev high retaining smoothness and a balanced power band. I imagine you are going to swap an HO version into yours for the stronger internals, higher compression, and more tune ability with the knock sensors. But my question is have you ever thought of putting a Hemi in, I know it’s a large undertaking but with you style of crystal clear videos the WJ community would be extremely grateful! Thank you for your hard work and innovative modifications and willingness to share it you have made my 4.7 Jeep and many others better.

Thank you so much Grant I really appreciate those kind words. For right now I'm going to be continued working on the 4.7 and yes I will be putting the HO engine into the Grand. A coworker of mine had a SRT8 Challenger that got rear-ended I didn't know about it until sometime afterwards, they totaled it. I would have loved to have bought it from the insurance company and install that engine and trans into the grand. Maybe someday. Thanks again

I did this to my 04 and added a catch can also. I live in Michigan, not a trace of condensation on the filler cap all winter. I just blocked the original hole in the filler. I ran a tube from the resonator box to the pass side head, works perfect.

Awesome insight that you have going on there. I have been having issues finding anything that would show me how any of these things go together on this '06 4.7 Mitsubishi Raider that I purchased recently. Martin--the oil neck pc valve and pipe can be cut off with a hack saw and cleaned up with a file and sand papered to a nice finish. Then take a 25/64th plastic trim plug with some silicone sealer on and around the shank, press plug in hole and it looks like it was made that way. It takes 15 minutes and it is easy and cheap.

Hi, I just found your vid. great how to. I live in southern Ontario Canada. i just bought a 2005 dakota with less than 97,000klm on it. 3.7 l engine. it must have sat for sometime before i bought it. I went to check the oil , looks great & clean. i looked under the oil cap and there is water and milk. It scared the crap outa me thinking head gasket... i havnt looked at the rad cap yet either. the antifreeze is low but i havnt topped it up to see if its losing any yet. Gotta wait til the stores open tomorrow the buy antifreeze and tune up parts. plugs filters etc.. I am also going to look in the cylinders when i change the plugs , I hope I dont see any moisture on them. fun stuff..

Mine has two filters, one small plastic box inside the intake that contains a fiber filter element soaked in oil and a metal crank case breather cap with another filter element inside it. Chryslers manual dictates that these two filters are to be cleaned with paint thinner or other solvents and re-oiled with fresh oil every time you do an oil change. Thats on the passenger side (right) side valve cover/cold air intake. On the drivers (left) side is the (P)ositive (C)rankcase (V)entilation valve, Chryslers manual dictates to test the valve function making sure the (1 way) flow regulator inside it can move freely. They go on further to say if stuck or damaged (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN AND RE-INSTAL) they said it must be replaced. This is for an engine built at Mound Road Engine plant, (OCT 5 88) As stamped in the Iron. Anywho, thats what I do... and It works fine, no water in the system... No freezing or locking up ever. So Chrysler seems to have solved the problem 20 years before the problem.

Wow, thanks man! I was watching a video on doing the timing and this happened to be up next and it was exactly what I needed! I just checked my oil and had yellow stuff on the oil fill tube cover and was freaking out! Now I know why it's doing that and how to fix it. Edit. Wait a second the Dodge Durango one doesn't have anything coming out of the oil fill tube?? So what do I do with the line I pull out of my jeep? You said I could either get one of those or do what you just did here.... So I need both then? Hopefully my question is clear enough. Thanks for your time man. Much appreciated

New to your channel. Really like your videos. I just bought an '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7 about 2 weeks ago. When I bought it, the oil looked clean on the dipstick and at the correct level. I maybe drove 300 miles in a week before I decided to change the oil the following weekend after purchasing. Only 3 quarts of oil drained out. I don't see any sludge under the filler cap. I am seeing wetness underneath at the back of the engine. It doesn't smoke at all. There is a smell of burnt oil after driving, but I'm sure it's coming from that leak at the back of the engine because it drips onto the exhaust. My question is, was wondering if the PCV valve and breather update would help this oil consumption? Or do you think I have another issue. I will check out your other videos. Forums I've read seem to suggest this is common for these 4.7s with no actual fix on any of them.

I don't think the PVC upgrade would reduce oil consumption. Something to consider is a oil catch can . I would do this in conjunction with the PCV valve upgrade. Thank you for checking out the channel and for subscribing I was planning to do a video on installing an oil catch can

Will the 08+ valve cover only. Just the baffled cover. fit on the first gen cylinder head ??? I did this update and I started consuming twice as much oil. And I’ve narrowed it down too slight over pressure and just excess oil pick up from valve cover. So the baffled 08+ it’s pretty necessary at least if you’re putting heavier loads on the vehicle….

Hi Martin, Great video. I am a new follower and a big fan. I have a couple of questions: Which way does the air flow from the right cylinder head? If it flows from the resonator/airbox to the cylinder head, should the 5/8" to 1/2" CCV breather valve be reversed or removed? And, would a wider diameter hose improve or diminish the system? You mentioned that the 53032925AC PCV Valve is 5/8", but the product detail says it is 3/4". Maybe it does not make a big difference for the hoses, but though I would mention it since I am trying to complete this project myself with the inclusion of an oil catch can. Let me know how the heater hoses worked out, I heard they have a tendency to collapse when under high heat. Thanks again!!
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 3 жыл бұрын
Yes on the right cylinder head it goes from the breather box to the cylinder head you can use larger hose if you like just don't go smaller. And you're correct it is 3/4 in on the PCV valve.. Heater hose worked fine and remember it's under quite a bit of heat itself But it's not as oil resistant but it did work.

The only spot that really leaves me enough room to untwist the canister for draining is right next to the tube that runs from the air filter to the manifold. However there isn't anywhere to mount it. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, Tyler

Martin, doing some work to my 4.7l HO today, (new radiator, water pump, t-stat, valve covers and lifters) and broke the PCV hose with the 90 degree tee near the rear when trying to get valve cover off. I was thinking of going to autoparts store and getting heater hose tee's. Do you think that will work as a substitute? The tee broke right off the elbow so there is no repairing it. It also seems they sell vacuum tubing elbows and connectors. I might just re-do all the hose with emissions lines because the plastic is brittle and seems to break easily. Would this be an issues replacing the plastic hard-lines with the softer emissions lines they sell? Thanks

This will correct the problem that the factory did earlier. What's happening is that the long tubes that were originally used are causing condensation because of the cooling effect. By shorting all the tubes, this reduces the sludging problem.

What I really dislike about this entire crankcase ventilation system is the fact that oil-laden blowby fumes, carrying lots of gunk, get passed directly into either the air resonator or the intake manifold, grossly filthing up the pathway. Just take a peak at the backside of the throttle plate, or, with throttle body removed, wipe a clean towel inside the air box inlet to see the filth. And we know cleaning the intake for a new build is such a filthy chore, even with a lint lizard brush and solvent tank, much detergent, much air, as that filth is everywhere inside the intake. Just wants me to add an old-style "breather tube", hanging down beside the block, sometimes.
