Engine Joe talks about the wildly popular Chrysler PowerTech 3.7 Liter and 4.7 Liter engines and why they are now having to be replaced. With more than 3 million of these popular engines in circulation since 1999 many people are realizing they are at the end of their life and need to be replaced. This isn't and indictment of the quality of these engines -- they've just run their course. Powertrain Company has the perfect replacement for these engines and Engine Joe will explain why.

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd 6 speed. Bought it in 2016 with 87,000 miles. It now has 218,000+ miles. Oil changes every 3000 miles. Five quarts go in, five quarts come out. Best used vehicle I have ever bought.

I just bought a 3.7 engine from you guys this evening .and new Mopar brand oil pan and intake manifold from mopar parts store. I have heard nothing but great things about and from you guys. My jeep has 265,000 miles on it , and still runs like a top with no check engine lights , on a jeep imagine that😂 , but with all them miles on it and i do alot of overlanding fishing trips in the middle of no where it is time to retire her old engine. So cant wait for the new one i live in PA , and thanks for making a great product at a fair price , from a retired vet i thank you.

These are solid engines indeed. I bought a 2001 Dakota SLT 2WD w/ the 4.7L and 195,000 original miles from an impound lot. I was hesitant to buy it, but I talked the salesman down to under a grand. It seemed to run well, just had a power steering leak, needed some minor suspension work, and a couple window motors. I've owned it for 14 months now and its just about to hit 200,000. I've updated all the maintenance and done some preventative maintenance as well. It runs strong and is a fun truck to tinker around with. I smile every day as I drive it because I have no car payment and only about 2,500 into it at this point (including the purchase price). I'll seriously consider one of these engines if anything happens to it in the future. I know I couldn't replace it for less than 5 to 7 grand with the condition it's in.

I have a 2008 jeep commander with 231,237 miles and when I first got it, it was using some oil and a few odds and ends, did some engine cleaning and other stuff, now it uses nothing. There’s a little lower end noise but it’s Been looked at many times and I’ve been reassured it’s alright. Over all what I’m saying is you take care of your engine and the 4.7l and it will last you, my jeep is running very strong still.

I had purchased a 2002 Jeep Liberty Renegade just last Thursday for $1000.00 cash. The body was nearly flawless, and the interior had only shown normal signs of wear. I was told that the engine was seized. I made the deal, I towed it home and set the charger on the battery for a day. The next day after work I went out to turn the key just to hear what the starter would do, whether it would click, buzz or nothing. To my surprise the engine had turned over! It didn't start though at first, but once I gave it a little gas it started right up! It wouldn't idle, but the engine did run. This Jeep has 199,000 on the clock. I have the perfect platform for a project. Yes, those little 3.7L V6 engines are built well.

I've had over 20 vehicles in my life, and my 2000 Grand Cherokee is the one I've had the longest for the most miles. 249k and still running strong, never an issue. And yes, It IS better then a Jeep 4.0 which I had before. The only issue is if you over heat them. Iron block + alum heads. Not really the engines fault. Owners not doing proper maintenance or pulling over if a problem comes up. Easy to work on, plenty of power, silk smooth.

I purchased my 2000 WJ 4.7L JGC in 2015, got it at a throw away price because of the engine ticking noise (at it was advertised). The engine KNOCK was due to a spun big end so I purchased a full reco engine from HM engines is AU. The engine was actually a HO version so when installing it I also upgraded the throttle body and ECU to match. I love the off the line power and its such a great car for cruising at 110Km/hr

So ill say this. I Drive ALOT. My commuter car is a vw tdi with 405k. Many years ago. I made my first big boy purchase, a low mileage 2008 ram with a 3.7. All it needed to do was haul a fourwheeler and go out on dates ( it was just clean and pretty all its life) and then i grew older and the toys and work life got bigger. That 3.7 lived off the rev limiter. Just of 2 years ago, i sold the truck in beautiful shape. An original 3.7 that was worked its a$$ off, purred like a kitten, didnt burn a drop of oil, didnt drip any fluids, with 380thousand relentless teenager style driven miles. The old man still drives that truck with a smile. And i oughtta kiss that truck because ive assumed all these years that the 3.7 was actually a bad engine and i was just blessed. Maybe still the case now. I have a jeep liberty with a 3.7 with only 180k. Does have its obvious leaks i gotta fix. But it sounds and runs solid. I think the 3.7 and 4.7 are just those motors they really performed and lasted pretty well and got a bad rep from the small select numbers of bad individuals, all whole 300+ thousand mile vehicles wjth these engines... well people arent praising and yelling about the fact. Theyre just living life.

Because of the value train design a full synthetic motor oil is a must 5W30! As I said because the valve train design valve stem cooling has to be via the motor oil to help cool the valve stem transferred into the valve seats intake if not? The seats will over heat break crack then fall apart sucked down into the cylinder destroying the engine. Over the years I've worked on these two engines this is always what I've seen as the main problem...

Am interested to know the background of the PowerTech engines when they were first developed by American Motors before the Chrysler takeover. Was the AMC V8 used as a starting point or given the role Renault played at the time, did AMC rather utilize the PRV V6 instead as a starting point an enlarged V6/V8 (via a longer stroke) on the basis the PRV shares the same 93mm bore as the PowerTech engines (along with the fact the PRV V6 itself was originally conceived as a V8 during development)?

Not that he needs any help selling engines ( He's a very good salesman ) But I have about 205,000 on mine and the only issue I have is bad exhaust manifolds. And its actually not all that bad of a job, on the 05 Dakota's anyway. Plenty of room through the wheel wells. The reason the engines drop seats is because people don't realize there is a bleeder screw up top for the cooling system and it 100% must be done every time the coolant is drained for any reason; it must be blead! And for a good period of time, up to 40 minutes in some cases with the heater blowing. Or else bubbles in the system lead to un-even cooling and hot spots in the heads and POP goes the valve seats. The other problem is the rockers(can)fall out due to bad lifer/ "lash adjuster-springs" basically you only need the valve covers off, and from that point on its a matter of just poping the rocker arms off (a plastic clip remover, for autobody will do) Anywho, if you take care of that before there is a problem.. There WONT be a problem. They're good little engines, I'm even considering getting a second one for my 80's dodge that has a manual transmission.. (: (edit: I'm talking about the 4.7 Magnum specifically)

I agree it is nowhere near as bad as the 5.4. I am a Mopar guy. But the valve seat issue was there from 99 to 07. Only the dual plug heads are immune to valve seats dropping. And the rocker arm usually comes out when the seat drops. So IDK what we are arguing about...hahaha Have a good one

The updated version came out in 2008, before the next generation of RAM trucks came out. So you most likely have the original 310hp engine that came in the 2008 model, unlike the 2007 and earlier which had the older 4.7 generation.

I got 140,000 miles out of my 3.7 without any issues before I sold it. My only complaint is the oil filter location. Pain to do oil changes. The 3.7 also has pretty loud valve-train clacking. My biggest issue with Chrysler is their transmissions. The 42RLE was a piece of garbage.

My 05 GC WK has 200k on the clock, on all original equipment. Change your oil every 3-5k miles, use synthetic or blends for the oil, not the old dino only stuff. Don't baby the engine, the engine needs to be put through its rpm band every now and then. And if you are 120k+ on your miles and still rocking the factory Rad, replace it. They are time bomb and if it fails in a bad way, your engine is toast. They do not like to be over heated. Overheating this engine is pretty much death for it. The Waterpumps need to be replaced as well, they do fail. on my 3rd water pump, replaced waterpump and rad @ 170k miles. Now pushing 200k miles and thing runs like a champ. We put around 2-4k miles on it every month. It has never left us stranded. Like all Powertech Engines at this age, my Valve Covers leak. That and the Exhaust Manifold bolts breaking are two nearly guaranteed problems you will face at some point owning these things. The 545RFE is bulletproof. My GM car's never had as easy as life as my jeep. My old Jimmy went through two transmission rebuilds and a ton of engine components(damn spider injector), as well as a rear diff. Not to mention the crap suspension. She still lasted to 250k before getting rid of her, but still the cost of doing 250k was not cheap. The person who bought if from me had gotten a truck that was nearly half new.

Has nothing to do with maintenance. It amazes me how many people think this. The seats simply fall out. This is DEFINITELY more frequent on engines that have been run hot before, but that is NOT a requirement. The seats simply aren't pressed in tight enough from the factory. They fall out at random. You could change your oil every thousand miles, use the best gas, change the plugs every 10k miles, NEVER drive it hard, always warm it up , etc., and STILL drop a valve seat at 50k miles.
@Repoman1509
@Repoman1509 4 жыл бұрын
ALL 4.7 liter engines with the standard (SINGLE spark plug) head, EVERY SINGLE YEAR from 1999 to early 2008 can drop seats AT ANY TIME. ALL (every single one ever made) 3.7 liter V6 CAN drop a valve seat AT ANY TIME. ALL 2003 to 2008 5.7 liter Hemi engines CAN DROP A VALVE SEAT AT ANY TIME. Doesn't matter how frequently you change your oil or do other maintenance. Doesn't matter how easy or hard you are on the engine. NOTHING will prevent it. It it IS going to happen, it IS GOING to happen. Hemi was fixed for the 2009 model year. 4.7 was fixed for the late 2008/2009 model year (and then dropped shortly after that), when they went to the dual spark plug heads. The poor 3.7 was NEVER reliable.

The engines were fine with synthetic fluid. It was their cooling system that had issues.
@jw11432

That's what I've read. Another issue is they used single row radiators, so they didn't have as much cooling capacity as they really should have had, they bare minimum'd it. I'm pre-emptively doing a motor refresh on my 4.7, got the heads rebuilt, replacing all the seals, oil pump, water pump, etc. and will also be putting in an upgraded all aluminum (no plastic caps) 4 row radiator. Also swapping out that goofy hydraulic cooling fan for an electric setup.

I have an 07 Liberty with 3.7 it has over 315,000 on-the-clock it's an amazing little tank of a vehicle but now I also have a 03 4.7 L in a Ram 1500 and the motor has been ripped out and rebuilt twice and it keeps blowing head gasket I honestly I'm just disgusted with this 4.7 L and I don't know if there's any help for it I'm considering ripping it out and putting a 5.7 in it

A 454 will fit in a chevette so,,,, sure! The closer the too vehicles are the easier the swap.If the only difference is the name stamped on top not bad.pulling a transverse mounted automatic to bolt up to a in line manual,from a different gen that's more work.

my friend has a 2004 Dodge1500 with a 4.7 pickup with 130k miles and used royal purple oil since new and serviced cooling system alot and it still blew the head gasket and is blowing plenty white smoke and can't afford to go buy a new truck. another friend had a 99 intrepid and that motor died at 73k and he changed oil. same thing with my daughters 2001 intrepid 2.7 motor died at 101k miles. then she got a 2011 durango (I told her not to) and had to change the cam and lifters at 153k and the transmission at 157k then dumped it.

I have one of the 4.7s in my 2013 ram, I got the truck for a STEAL! It’s been a good engine I had an issue with the electronic throttle body but other than that it’s been pretty good, this engine does seem to have serious power loss at high altitudes though, anything over 5k feet it sounds like it’s gasping for air and has no power.

just looked at buying an '05 Ram with the 4.7 earlier today, took it on a test drive and it ran and sounded good but man was it a dog when i went to accelerate. which is unfortunate because i really did like the truck, but if it seems sluggish on its own then i cant imagine how it would be towing something.

Did it have huge rims and tires? If it's not geared for tall tires, any truck will loose acceleration with bigger tires.
@NPC-Gamer
@NPC-Gamer 3 жыл бұрын
@@kCI251 No, it didn't have anything huge on it. I actually would like to retract what I stated, I feel like my expectations were too high going into the test drive. I went back and drove it again then bought it. I think it just needed to be driven because now it feels adequate.

Is the 4.7 a good engine to run 10 pounds of boost through
@jeremywillins7927
@jeremywillins7927 5 жыл бұрын
@Rusty Highlander NO! any boost on a stock 3.7 or 4.7 could destroy the pistons because the top compression ring is very close to the top of the piston and can get very hot and expand too much under boost. You can buy forged low compression pistons tho, then i bet it would be a pretty solid boosted v8.

If only you guys replaced those seats with actual hardened iron ones instead of powered.. and if only you put cast or forged rods in them instead of those ticking time bombs called powdered metal connecting rods.. Why anyone thinks those things are a good idea is beyond me, old school cast iron rods are stronger.

Junk. Drop valve seats, blow head gaskets, eat oil pumps .They had a run of 14 years, sb mopar went well over 40 years.Lousy power for displacement and for the technology, 1957 Chevy 283 had better power for displacement numbers. Prepare to put an oil pump in them every 100k miles of replace the whole engine at 130k.

The 4.7 is not a, “really good engine” from the factory no matter how much you take care of it, it’ll still let rocker arms/ roller followers loose in the head and drop a valve. The 5.4 3v is even better than that motor. At least frequaently changing the oil so the smal ports don’t get clogged in the 5.4 will make it last
@Repoman1509
@Repoman1509 4 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha NO it won't dude. Once the cam phasers start to go on the 5.4, the cam stops getting good oil pressure and the cam journals/caps and where the cam rides I the head get TORN THE FUCK UP in NO time. There isn't a way to fix the Ford without permanently removing the VVT, which kills mpg and power. And even then, you still have a VERY sensiting oiling system and NEED oil changes every 3k miles no matter what, to save those delicate fucking heads.... at least u can fix a Chrysler engine by installing better valve seats! 😄😄
@Repoman1509
@Repoman1509 4 жыл бұрын
I work at a machine shop also... I see this shit day in and day out. 3L3E heads NEVER come in as useable cores. Chrysler heads, on the other hand, are usually salvageable. The ONLY problem we see with the 4.7 Chrysler head is with the RIGHT head; when a seat drops, it spits a rocker arm out and in the process it usually breaks the "boss" that the rocker arm bolts to, ruining the head. But that's much less common than finding a completely junk 5.4 three valve head due to lack of lubrication. And it isn't even necessarily the phasers that cause this issue; ALL Ford modular engines, from 1990-1991 through the end of the run in the 2010s, had EXTREMELY sensitive oiling systems that had EXTREMELY poor oil filtering capabilities..... TONS of 4.6, 4.6 PI, 5.4, 5.4 PI, 4.6 three valve, 5.4 three valve, 6.8,6.8 PI and 6.8 three valve heads are unable to be reused during a rebuild because lack of lubrication (due to cam phasers being worn out, debris in the oil from cam phasers OR WHATEVER on non-VVT engines, and debris in the oil from the stupid ass plastic timing guide cassettes shredding themselves over time) destroying the cam cylinder head where the cam rides, the cam journals and cam caps..... it is a STUPID, STUPID design on an otherwise EXCELLENT engine (and by EXCELLENT, I am referring to the 4.6 two valve engine; the ONLY good (RELIABLE) engine Ford has made in the last 30-40 years.
