Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

6 жыл бұрын

Another restoration video from "Marty's Matchbox Makeovers". This time a tatty, well played with BP tanker is restored to near new condition. Footage of how to make replacement axles included.
Sorry to my subscribers who left comments after I first posted this vid. It needed minor editing and so I deleted it from youtube and re-uploaded a newer edited version.
There is a couple of bloopers at the end one of which helps the viewer understand a decision I made during re-assembly.

An interesting detail you overlooked is the tilt cab. Like a real truck of its type, the cab can be released and tilted forward pivoting around the front bumper area. This is a pretty cool feature of the real trucks and your model.

Has it really been only one year? Poor Past Marty, struggling to keep a grip on the model with tweezers and pliers whilst paint-stripping. Love to despatch these and see how far you're come!

That was always one of my favourites as a kid. My dad worked for a fuel company called 'Aero', which became 'ABCO'. Although he was management, it was a small company, and he did a bit of everything, and would often turn up at home in a real one of these, to the annoyance of the neighbours. If I remember correctly, Lesney later upgraded this model to include glazing, and a cab interior. For a toy of that price (9d, in pre decimal money), the build, detail, and safety of them - Lesney never used Lead in the casting, the paint, or the packaging - they were astonishing.

Really enjoyable to watch - I had one of these back in the 1960s, and I remembered about the seats which tipped forward to reveal the engine! I spent hours playing with Matchbox cars back then - and now spend hours watching you restore them. Keep up the good work!

Crikey, that was a soft post! lol I've had some success with 2mm washers when the hole is drilled too much. You need a fair bit of ground clearance, so it doesn't always work, but worth a try if you are stuck. As always, superb job Marty.

Superb restoration. This one is a bit more complicated for painting in that it is 3 colours. These little gems really illustrate the Master Model Makers art. They are so well detailed. And this is over 50 years ago. They even include the Bedford Griffin badge on this TK series.

Another great job well done Marty, do you know that Lesney slipped up when they designed and made that tanker, as Bedford TK trucks and that's one of them, never had tilting cab's. The access to the engine was gained by those little lift flaps each side rear of the driver and passenger door's, they had metal stays with slots to lock them in the up position, I use to drive them in the sixties as well as the the Bedford TJ which the Bedford TK later replaced it. Can I recommend that when you grind off your axles you use a large washer with a small hole that slips over the axle thus protecting the wheels & tyres from damage from your grinder, then you wouldn't have to worry that one day you might slip. Thanks Marty keep up the good work, can't wait to see more Reg

Got Mine from the Batch of Matchbox I got for Xmas of 67, I Still have # 25, but I Took Off the Cab in the Fall of 74, & Replaced it with a Plastic Cab Truck Cab from my Tyco Train Accessory in 73. That Truck Cab I Broke by Accident, Filed Off the the Bottom where the Wheels were & the Back Chassie, to Fit in the Tanker. With the Tanker itself, it had Plastic Seats inside, but we're Lost, so I Decided to do a Transplant, & Took it to Woodshop Class & Filed Off the Hinge that held the Cab, & Replaced it with the Plastic Truck Cab that was Part of my Train Set Accessory. &... I Still have the Yellow Bedford Cab!

This a fascinating series. It’s easy to neglect just how innovative the processes were in the day. Mr Jack Odell (later of LLedo fame - Odell in reverse), production & design director of Matchbox was truly one of toyland’s greatest visionaries. I like the reverse engineering process and great care you take over the restoration. I noted in one video of the “Matchbox” factory spray booths that the models are spun round during spraying, presumably to throw off excess paint by centrifugal force. The tapping of the post looks interesting and I am about to look for a 2mm ‘tap & die’ set as this can be very versatile for other miniature tasks - can you recommend a supplier/manufacturer? Great work, thanks for sharing.

Hi Marty can I suggest that you buy a self centering bit mostly used when drilling holes for hinges, the bits are interchangeable and this means that you can just removed enough material from the centre of the rivet.

There is another guy doing the same but he actually buffs the metal and shines it before painting, and I thin he is damaging the original casting, but he has fans from youtube send him their models and he restores them for them.
