Your correct that the insurer should have been notified of the recovery ( I have 18 yrs Insurance claims experience ) but there is a reward for the party that makes the salvage. (Marty) but that would be made by the insurance company & not necessarily by the boat owner. The language of the policy will give the details. The owner of the boat may have violated his contract with his insurance carrier & his policy could be terminated. Granted the boats a piece of crap & this accident could have been staged by the owner to get a new replacement on the Insurance carriers dime. Who ties a mooring with thin cotton rope? @@marksbikeexports5123 It's not as simple as "finders keepers" which many seem to wrongly believe. NZ law requires the authorities be notified promptly. Nice find there mate , useful little tender with a bit of attention and a tidy up. That little Suzuki outboard would probably stand a gudgeon pin and set of rings but as simple as they are, it most likely doesn’t need a lot and the bits are fairly easy to find. As to the ownership of the vessel, I imagine the insurance company wouldn’t want to spend anymore time and money retrieving it but to head off any legal issues it would be best to inform them and let them clear it. It owes you very little to date but it’d be a shame to Chuck a few quid at it and have some junior arsehole from an insurance company smugly claim it back. Idyllic is the word that springs to mind looking at that beautiful piece of water. With the sun out and a hook in the water you’d be hard pressed to find better anywhere! Those mussels look fantastic, bet they’re great steamed with a little herbs and butter, nice fresh bread and a glass of your favourite cool beverage and bugger! What more could a bloke need ? (On dry land) Would turning the boat upside down on wood work stands (to protect the windshield), placing a strong light in it (at night), and looking for light peaking out from the bottom (which is now the top) work in spotting the leaks? Got to give the boat a name. i.e. Silver Minnow

I hadn't thought of the light trick thanks, I'll call it the silver sieve

@@MartyT I've had a lot of aluminum boats and the best thing I've found to fix leaks is JB Weld. It tends to get inside cracks and crevices better than epoxy. Being more liquid like it will go in there and "mushroom" meaning a better hold. With age aluminum boats tend to loosen at the rivets and that's where they'll often leak. When you have it upside down, daub every rivet and seam with JB Weld, paint it with some heavy epoxy paint. She'll be water tight guaranteed. Nice find, BTW. She can be made into a sweet little run around.

Spot-in. Back in the 90s half of 5th fleet was treading water due to JB Weld, stuff works fantastically.
