In the comics Ulysses had an extremely abusive relationship with Elsa. He once took her out on a bot chummed up the water and threw her in to see if she could survive. In the comics Elsa normally teams up with Deadpool, Wolverine, and Black Knight. She’s also a member of the Midnight Suns.
@OfficialMediaKnights

Oh no way!!! We assumed it was abusive since it was insinuated she 'ran away' and didn't return for 20 years, so that was the biggest giveaway but we didn't know it was this bad! Hopefully we see more of Elsa, now that Deadpool is coming out, Wolverine is coming back and the Black Knight was introduced, we should be all set to see more of her!!!

Thanks for saying that. I always assumed Ulysses was presented as heroic in Marvel comics. I just remember covers from the 70s with this giant blonde hair guy that looked like Thor in a safari outfit wearing the bloodstone.

I too loved the transformation scene. I was even more impressed to read that the director didn't use CGI during that scene. It was all in-camera effects. They traded out actors in different stages of transformation as the strobe light flashes to create the shadows on Elsa.

@@OfficialMediaKnights yes! The effects are incredible. Here's Giacchino's full quote: ""That's not a visual effect, that shot. That was all done in-camera and that took months to design and figure out how we were going to do it, but Joe Farrell, our visual effects supervisor, was incredible in helping put that together. But that is almost exactly as I storyboarded that moment, exactly that... so wherever we could do practical, in-camera effects, we did it, and I would say there [are] a ton of them in there, you just would never even know." "Ted" as in Theodore "Ted" Sallis, Man-Thing's human name before he got mutated. He probably prefers to be called that because that's the only piece of his former life that he has, and he wants to hold on to the only thing left that reminds him of his lost humanity.

Great reaction, guys! Here's something I loved about this special that I feel Giacchino understood that so many modern directors seem to overlook when attempting make love letters to classic monster movies like this. The real horror in those old movies is not in the number of scares or kills, or the shock and blood and gore. The real horror in those old films lies in the tragedy that befalls the lead character who is a monster, or becomes a monster. Many of the classic monster movies are based on old novels from the 19th century, and those stories are steeped in tragedy, which is where the true horror comes from. The old monster films made sure to incorporate that element, and I find that is often missed in the throwback types of horror flicks made today. Giacchino understood that tragedy aspect and brought it out in our lead's performance. Gael Garcia Bernal's acting carries that element of personal tragedy with him. I loved it!
@OfficialMediaKnights

Absolutely true! The tragedy of not being able to avoid your true nature and that nature being something that could end up hurting innocent people is a theme that always up the stakes when included in horror. I’m glad this felt like a movie of the era! 😃 thank you so much for your support!

Aside from whatever implications we assumed by the presence of the "TVA" (who turned out to just be guards) in the trailer, there's nothing to suggest that this story takes place in a different timeline or universe than our main MCU continuity. In fact, in the mausoleum there are dates on the tombs that (I think) run all the way up to the 1980's... maybe even later. With the Avengers being referenced in the intro, I think it's safe to assume this is the 616. And the Timeline Order on Disney+ lists this as happening after Love and Thunder. I think both of these things are very important, because it means that Jack, Ted, and Elsa are now in the toybox for future MCU projects. Interfacing with Moon Knight or Black Knight or Blade. Joining up with Midnight Sons. Using Man-Thing for crazy multiverse stories. Facing off with Doctor Strange or Agatha. Et cetera.

@@OfficialMediaKnights I'm stoked for Jack, Elsa and Ted entering the MCU, but, I mean, we're already quite deep into the supernatural aspects of Marvel in the MCU. We've got Doctor Strange, Clea, Wong, The Ancient One and all the sorcerers in Kamartage, Ghost Rider in Agents of SHIELD, Sister Grim in Runaways, Cloak and Dagger, the Helstroms and the demons they fight, Thor and Loki and Frigga and the witches who raised her and all the other gods of Asgard, the gods in the city of immortals in Love & Thunder, Valhalla, Bast and the version of an afterlife seen in Black Panther and the Egyptian gods and the version of an afterlife seen in Moon Knight, Scarlet Witch and Agatha Harkness and the coven we saw Harkness with in her Wandavision flashbacks and Wundergore and the Darkhold and the Book of Vishanti and 2 separate magic interdimensional cities with dragons in them in Iron Fist and Shang-Chi and the soul stealing monster in Shang-Chi, the sorcerer in Stallone's group at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the creatures summoned by Donny Blaze in She-Hulk and the realms he sent people to and the creatures Addisyn met, the ebony blade, we've heard Blade though not seen him yet and one of the patients at Abomination's retreat claims to be a vampire (and we've heard vampires mentioned already)...Hell, though this is Man-Thing's first actual appearance, we'd already heard him mentioned by Maria Hill in an Agents of SHIELD episode (saying he'd been a SHIELD prisoner at one point) and seen a giant bust of him on Sokkar in Thor: Ragnarok (a SHIELD prison and the gladiatorial games on an alien planet: no wonder Jack's annoyed at how many times he's had to rescue him).

Man-Thing's actual name in the comics is Theodore {Ted} Sallis. He was working on a project with Super Soldier Serum in the Everglades and A.I.M. tried to steal it. He injected himself with the serum and then crashed into a swamp charged with eldritch energy. He became the guardian of the Nexus of All Realities and people burn when he touches them if they are afraid.

Did not know this until today. Apparently mazes and labyrinths are different things. Labyrinths have only one "Solution". But mazes can have multiple paths to lead to exiting. Remarkably insightful reactions on the parts of both of you. So good to see a couple reaction where the reactions and insights are split pretty evenly between the two of you! Some fine insights into the Marvel world as well. Most impressive! That film feel you kept referring to is most accurate. Moody blacks and whites, odd angles, large sets, fog etc etc. These are all aspects of the German Expressionism style Universal used back in the 1930s and 40s for their Classic Monster films. Even the first appearance of Jack Russel and Werewolf by Night (Marvel Spotlight #2) copies the poem from the post-1941 Universal films "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night. May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the moon is full and bright." (I say "post 1941" since the original Wolf Man film from 1941 had a last line that read "When the autumn moon is bright." ANYWAY, a fantastic reaction! Looking forward to delving into your past catalogue!

First of all, thank you so much for your comment and support - you taking the time to write out something this thoughtful truly keeps us motivated! We truly appreciate the support and hope that you enjoy the rest of our content as well! It's so funny you mentioned that but, we were so impassioned by this that we had an almost 30 minute discussion about this afterwards, which we had to cut drastically to save on time and entertainment value. I (Denise) learned quite early on in my discovery of my passion for filmmaking that German expressionism was a HUGE influence in many genres, particularly in horror, which was one of the reasons I'd mentioned 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligary', the effects of which still trickle on down til this day! Also, loved The Wolf Man, one of my favorite monster movies to date!

A little late on this but I just wanted to mention that the soundtrack is one of my favorite parts. Its more or less the Marvel counterpart of The Batman, which was also composed by Giacchino. Its pretty similar to it in many ways but this one has more cinematic choirs. Also like The Batman, this one has such a gothic vibe here. Rich and lush at times while also being creepy and ominous. Like the tuba horn part was insane. I also really love those horror tremolo and pizzicato strings. Those give me eargasms every time. Jack's theme is really the highlight here and is almost played the most. On the soundtrack, there are two bonus cues. Both are Jack's are the same but played differently. The first one is played on an acoustic guitar while the second one is a piano version. Would love to see Michael Giacchino do more horror related soundtracks. He's more than capable of creating really scary and suspenseful parts well.

Whatever knows fear *burns* at the Man-Thing's touch! Werewolf by Night was a long-running Marvel title, and the flagship of the company's horror line. Moonknight first appeared, there, as did Blade, and it is set in the same universe (for the most part) as the more well-known superhero titles. However, I think it's safe to say that, given the events of Loki, Man-Thing has a significant role to play in the MCU.

Late to the game but things people never notice: Every now and then you'll see a sort of scratchy circle appear in the top right, then a few moments later it reappears. This is a signal to the projectionist in a movie theatre to start the next reel on the other projector. Of course this was digital, and there aren't any reels but it's a brilliant detail for those who know. Fun fact: projectionists used to push a coin into a reel near to the middle so that when it was nearly empty the coin would drop and make a noise - just in case the projectionist was nodding off, or reading.

The Man-Thing's power in the comics is in addition to limited invulnerability because he is made of plant material, he can burn anyone who he touches that is afraid. He doesn't create or control portals. He is the guardian of an area of the Everglades known as the Nexus of realities where portals open all the time into other realities or other realities in the multiverse.

Couple of quick things. The first creature shown in the manuscript {and as a trophy in the Trophy Room} looks like it is meant to be the MCU version of the "lesser" vampires. {The ones not directly connected to Dracula.} The ears look like maybe they going for it to look like Baron Blood. His costume had huge ears like that. So, they might be going for the ears to be actual ears in the MCU. After the two-headed creature is shown, the next creature might be Wendigo, which is an actual part of the comics. The big furry creature that Ulysses is fighting with a bow & arrow.

Hi Again Folkses! I don't want to be a comment hog but wanted to add a bit of comic history on both Werewolf and Man-Thing. In a nutshell, Man-Thing originated as scientist Theodore (Ted) Sallis who, while working on an experiment, ended up in a swamp and turned into Man-Thing. This was in 1971's Savage Tales #1 (a B&W Marvel magazine). Just for the record Swamp Thing had a similar backstory but came out in House of Secrets #92 (some controversy there) a couple of months later. Both characters came long after The Heap, another swamp created man-monster from 1942. Jack Russel first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #2 as Werewolf by Night. His "werewolfery" was inherited from a family curse. He went on to appear in #3 and 4 before yielding to the 1st appearance of the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider in Spotlight #5. Both Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night got there own titles in the 70s and have appeared in various Marvel titles since. BTW - Just noticed that reaction at 15:28 re "That's a big foot!" Just subtle enough! 🤭

The art work in the beginning and the hallway art have very good Easter eggs like the wendigo from the comics like in x men and the hallway art has a specific and special nod of the og look of Gorr the God Butcher or what he supposedly to look like, the tendril alien killed by vikings similar to the comics. And the other thing is the makeup on Gael is the similar makeup work in the movie Coco or the Dias del la Muertos makeup work to honor and respect the ancestors.

We’re definitely expecting that crossover to happen! Who knows exactly what universe this is set. I mean they got Man-Thing so it doesn’t really matter. He can control the multiverse and access it. If they wanted to they can write a solution by utilizing him as a doorway to our main universe. What we can’t wait to see is that sweet sweet Midnight Sons movie 😍

I hope Marvel and Michael Giacchino make a Manthing prequel special presentation in the future I'd love to see them explore his tragic origin story or even cooler do a full 2 hour long black and white legion of monsters or Midnight Sons movie and release it in theaters that would be awesome man it could be such a visually unique and different take on superhero movies like just make it a adventure monster hunting movie like the mummy with Brendan Fraser or van Helsing movie with Hugh Jackman and it would stand apart from from the other teams like the avengers, fantastic four, X-men and Guardians of the Galaxy characters who almost always deal with universe ending or now multiverse ending threats

I absolutely love this and I agree with what you said! I’d love to see Man-Thing’s origins story. It could indeed bring so much more lore and richness to the mcu. And start cementing the pillars for the Midnight Sons. Imagine Michael Giacchino helming the MCU’s Monster Heroes. I’d love to see him take on a longer project now that he stretched his wings a little. Thank you so much for commenting! 😀

It's not the TVA and It's not a pocket dimension, It's not Chaos Magic. Elsa gave up her birth right. I think you guys are just overthinking things. It's a stand alone special that pays homage to the old school Hollywood Monster movies from the past and just appreciate the acting, cinematography and music.

We did appreciate all those things! But since they didn’t quite specify the origins of the Bloodstone I don’t think it’s overthinking at all! Could very well end up being from a different dimension all together (the stone I mean) the same way Agatha pulled magic from the dark dimension. When it comes to the tva and pocket dimension yeah we figured that out too while reacting haha I guess now all that’s left is enjoy the ride that’s to come

Ted's full name is Ted Sallis and he is part of the main Marvel Universe. We also know that he exists in the MCU because his face appears as one of the sculpted faces on the Grandmaster's tower in Thor: Ragnarok. He is the hybrid product of science and magic and his primary role is that of the Guardian of the Nexus of Reality, a place that can access all the different possible realities. For most of the Marvel timeline he was a fairly mindless being with instances where he was more sentient as he is in this Werewolf By Night. Based on what the second season of Loki reveals, it is probable that the Man Thing will have a greater role in the MCU.

Is "Man-Wolf" for next year to high to hope for? "J. Jonah Jamison" forced to ask for help from "Supes" to save his son from himself? "Jack Russell..." LOL! Makes me think of "Eddie" on "Frasier." This "one and done" was proof that one should NEVER confine a "Jack Russel." They really need their "walkies" or they get cranky.

Honestly we both really loved it! It’s a solid 9.5 for both of us. The main story was wrapped up nicely although we do believe they could’ve delved into the origins of the Bloodstone or how exactly it works. What universe this is (even though it’s suggested it’s 616) and it felt a bit short. But honestly we’re just nitpicking because we absolutely loved it. Cinematography was great, the score was amazing. The director and composer Michael Giacchino did an absolute marvelous job at utilizing music and mystery in sync with the camera work. And I loved the casting for both Werewolf By Night and Elsa. Gore in the mcu is something we are inviting with open arms specially now that Blade is underway. And it feels like their building the pillars of the Midnight Suns. Cannot wait to see how this will impact the MCU (bloodstone being the possible next big tool they’ll use since there’s only 1 apparently) and of course they saved Man things powers for the juicy next entries.

@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
It is 616! But I don’t know how much the super soldier serum would be a factor in identifying the universe. Since we have Peggy Carters Captain Carter on the other side of the multiverse. Since Ted is such an exception we do know this story takes place in 616 but it would be an interesting outcome if this Ted is a traveler from a different universe all together that just happen to stay here. Since his powers highly rely on the manipulation of the multiverse.

@@OfficialMediaKnights No problem, the only reason why it’s in black & white and not in full color, is because one word: Disney… Yeah, they’re a bunch of pansy’s for making people go through that- if we’d gotten to see actual Red color gore, the experience would’ve been a lot more Truthful to the comics. Needless to Say, I hope they realize that the brutally of comic horror based Heroes are here to stay.. Otherwise, I feel like Stan’s ghost might haunt their lazy Asses for ruining his character’s as well as his friend’s and colleagues character’s Too. Because, Marvel was only ever meant for teenagers or kids that were 12 or Higher, back in the day. Apart from that, I think Disney fails to realize that Half the time. Which is Why Stan’s ghost, may end up scaring them straight so Badly, that they’ll End up adhering to the Man’s wishes to not ruin anymore of Marvel’s character’s inside or outside of the MCU. Trust me, the Day that happens, is the day I’ll belt an Evil smirk with a whisper that reads; “I knew it would happen, some day.”
