In the comics, Man-Thing (Ted) was a scientist who was working to recreate the super-soldier serum. On the run from the terrorist group AIM, who was trying to steal it, he burned his notes and injected himself with the only sample, but then he got in a flaming car crash and was transformed into the Man-Thing. Comics Man-Thing is usually essentially mindless, and just aimlessly wanders around the Everglades. However, he's also empathic, and is drawn to any strong emotions. He's particularly sensitive to - and enraged by - fear, which causes him to secrete a corrosive substance that he uses to destroy the source of fear. (Hence his tagline, "Whoever knows fear burns at the touch of Man-Thing!")

Just wanted to point out to everyone that Man Thing came out first, and while I do like Swamp Thing and what they've done with the character, it's almost like DC can't help themselves but turn their heroes into low-level gods. I like that Man Thing is "just" a monster, mostly.

Yes, Giacchino crushed it! He totally melded sound, image, movement, and story into a beautiful, clean, and tight show that I just fell in love with! I knew you’d like it too. I even liked the addition of the duel real change spots in the upper right corner. So imaginative. The action was great, and not drawn out until you just don’t care anymore. Ted was “Man-Thing” who is Marvel’s version of “Swamp Thing.” I loved both protagonists . . . Elsa was kick-butt and my new crush. Jack the Werewolf is fantastic and must appear, hopefully with Ted or Elsa, again because I love’em!!! Keep up the great reactions, Angela!

It was indeed Michael Giacchino’s homage to to the classic Universal Monster films. Also, the Werewolf by Night comics introduced the character Moon Knight. Elsa Bloodstone is a classic Marvel hero as well as Man-Thing (Ted Salas, a scientist transformed into the creature during a super soldier experiment gone wrong). This was an amazing special. I think the MCU looked at the success of this and is realizing that it doesn't have to do all its Disney+ non-movies as shows. Some of them would be better introduced as a special presentation. Of course, we still need the shows :). Looking forward to getting interactions between Blade, Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight and eventually a Midnight Son's team up

Moon Knight's 1st appearance was in Werewolf by Night in the 70s. As his silver costume and weapons were basically drawn to make him the ultimate antagonist to Jack Russell (Werewolf by Night). But that was before they'd actually given Moon Knight a real name, Marc Spector, and his back story dying at the alter of the statue of Konshu. That came 2 years later after that 1st appearance. Ulysses Bloodstone was basically the big Marvel Monster Hunter until he died around 2000. He had the Bloodstone embedded in his chest in the comics. It allowed him to live for thousands of years, and have super healing and minor super human strength and reflexes, on the level of Captain America. When he died most of the Bloodstone was destroyed. Elsa Bloodstone has existed for about 20 years, and has been Marvel's big monster hunter since the death of her dad. She wears a fragment of the Bloodstone around her neck in a chocker, which gives her it's power, but she also has some power from her father having the power of the Bloodstone when conceiving her. She's has dyed red hair in the comics. And if you have a switch she's a playable character in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Ted, Dr. Theodore Sallis, is the Man-Thing. Marvel's protector of the Nexus of Realities. Has a bunch of plant based powers like DC's Swamp Thing and their origin in the swamps is very similar( Man Thing was a scientist killed in the Florida Everglades in a swamp while working on a secret government formula, Swamp Thing was a scientist killed in the Louisiana swamps while working on a secret government formula! 😂). And that's because they were created 3 months apart in the early 70s. As the original artists of both characters were roommates in New York. Man Thing was created 1st though. I'm sure there are some videos on KZfaq about their shared creation.

He composed the intro music to the MCU along with the soundtracks to The Batman, UP, Ratatouille, J.J. Abrams Star Trek trilogy, Rogue One, MCU Spider-Man films, Jojo Rabbit, The Incredibles 2, and the first Medal of Honor game to name a few. Werewolf by Night no wonder the music is heavily ingrained to the visuals. Man-Thing (Theodore Sallis) was a great surprise no doubt we'll see them again in a Midnight Suns project or there own series as that would be amazing something more mature and brutal.

More Man Thing please! Never saw the trailer either, so I didn’t know he was going to be in this. I was a huge fan of Man Thing as a teen (dating myself here as that comic ran way back in the ‘70’s) and was thoroughly disappointed by the 2005 Brett Leonard film adaptation. So I was beyond delighted when he turned up here, looking better than I remember. And yes, Michael Giacchino crushed it in every way possible. My fave soundtrack of his was actually “The Incredibles”. Just as this was an homage to old Universal monster movies, the “Incredibles” soundtrack was at times an homage to the James Bond soundtracks of John Barry. If you haven’t seen it yet, “The Incredibles” would make a terrific reaction for you. Knowing that he can direct too gives me a whole new level of respect for the man.

Oh and I forgot to point out that if you didn't know, Marvel Comics has a bunch of characters that basically exist in and deal with the Occult/Mystical side of their universe. Dr. Strange exists there but also characters like Blade, Ghost Rider (3 main various incarnations from Johnny Blaze, who Nicholas Cage played in the Ghost Rider movies, to the lastest incarnation, Robbie Reyes with the Flaming car that you might have seen if you watched Agents of Shield), Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Morbius (yes, the Jared Leto movie character, who's movie was made by Sony because his 1st appearances we're in Spider-Man comics), Elsa Bloodstone, and many more. Even Moon Knight, who in the 80s was taken out of the Occult Books and made a noir Batman knockoff, as he was even a West Coast Avenger, then in the 2000s, they turned his other identities used to gather info Into full blown extra personalities, and made him crazy, ultra violent Batman, is dipped back into the Occult world in recent years. They have a famous team up group of these heroes called the Midnight Sons, based on this great comic story from the 90s, and every few years they do another Midnight Sons team up. If you play video games, there is a Midnight Suns game (changed the spelling of Sons to be more inclusive) coming out on PS5, PC, and the Xbox Series X/S this December, that's based on that comic run. Though they've added some Avengers, X-Men, and Runaways (who had a 2 season show on Hulu) characters & Spider-Man to the team to help the game sell more.

Ted is short for Theodore. Theodore “Man-Thing” Sallis. In regards to how Elsa could tank getting her head bashed a few times like she did is because her father had the Bloodstone at the time of Elsa’s conception and she gained a portion of it’s power in her blood. She’s faster, stronger and more durable than a normal human. The Bloodstone amps those attributes for her, but she does inherently have them. In the comics another gift that she has in her blood is she’s immune to vampirism and her blood can actually cure it.

I really liked this special as it homes in on my love of the classic monsters and spooky atmosphere. I hope that this opens the door for another occult Marvel characters (Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Ghost Rider, Brother Voodoo, and The Zombie among others) and helps bring their darkness to the main MCU. As others may have mentioned previously Ted is formally known as the Man-Thing (full name Dr. Theodore Sallis) was another in a long list of scientists working on replicating the Super Soldier Serum. Unfortunately Ted's laboratory was attacked by A.I.M. (last seen in Iron Man 3) and, after destroying his notes, injected himself with his experimental formula which turned him in the Man-Thing, a largely mindless beast inhabiting the Florida swamplands. Aggravated by negative emotions, mainly fear, he lumbers toward the source to destroy it ("Whosoever knows fear burns at the hands of Man-Thing!").

John Williams is the John Williams of our time. Those guys aren't in his league. This is the guy that wrote the Superman Theme, The Star Wars Theme, The Indiana Jones Theme, and the Jaws theme, literally the four most recognizable movie themes of all time. Both those guys do good work but come on.

10:19 - Dr. Theodore Sallis officially ....but yes. you can call the big green Snuffleupagus "Ted", if you like...🤣 15:09 - Disney found a good loophole - if it ain't red, it's not blood and you can show gore 😁

Hey, Angela! ULYSSES BLOODSTONE was a prehistoric man who came into possession of a fragment of the Bloodstone which embedded itself in his chest. The gem is an alien artifact from another dimension that protectively encased an evil intelligence called the Hellfire Helix capable of creating monstrous guardians. One such guardian destroyed Ulysses' entire tribe. For 10,000 years, he hunted the Bloodstone's guardians to avenge his tribe and psionically vanquished the Helix within the stone in the 20th-century. Having fulfilled his goal, he removed the fragment from his chest and aged instantly to dust. The uninhabited stone still has the power to amplify energy, heal, emit energy and repel monsters. It is now possessed by Ulysses' daughter, ELSA BLOODSTONE. JACK RUSSELL is the WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, the Wolfman of the Marvel Universe. He fought the vampiric-looking man-bat trophy mounted in the chamber because werewolves and vampires are mortal enemies. MOON KNIGHT started off in the comics as a werewolf hunter and traded blows with Jack more than once! TED SALLIS is the MAN-THING, a former biochemist who has lost his intelligence after merging with a mystical swamp while injected with a sulfur-based regenerative serum with which he was experimenting. He responds to anger, hate and fear by secreting sulfuric acid that severely burns those he touches. He is gentle with those who have no ill intent and who are not afraid of him. The portion of the Everglades he protects is known as THE NEXUS OF ALL REALITIES and Man-Thing can create portals to alternate realities as well as teleport to locations he has seen. Man-Thing has been a member of the THUNDERBOLTS and all three characters have been members of the MIDNIGHT SONS along with BLADE, MORBIUS, FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER, GHOST RIDER, HELLSTROM, JENNIFER KALE and BROTHER VOODOO! The special was emulating the black-and-white Universal horror cycle of the 1930s and 1940s starring the likes of Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr., Claude Rains and John Carradine even though it was set in 2025. GAEL GARCIA BERNAL is part of the 1990s Mexican Renaissance that includes DIEGO LUNA, DEMIAN BICHIR, SALMA HAYEK, ALFONSO CUARON, ALEJANDRO GONZALEZ INARRITU and GUILLERMO DEL TORO. LAURA DONNELLY is from "The Nevers" and "Outlander". The first color film to use three-strip Technicolor for the length of the feature was "Becky Sharp" in 1935!

This was a bit more impressive than what I was expecting. My favorite werewolf design still goes to Van Helsing, but this is pretty cool. And they managed to make Man-Thing look so innocent, adorable, yet a bit terrifying. Not what I was expecting, but I'll take it.

I so enjoyed your reaction to this, as I knew little about this other than the characters names when I saw it. Brilliantly done! The lighting techniques, the use of black & white, the shadows. Also, it was pointed out to me that things didn’t pop color, the bloodstone, until Elsa arrived. At the end, it was like the dark cloud of her family was lifted and the color that was there was finally revealed when Elsa sat and realized she was free, like Ted. I loved it and your reaction made me smile.
