For the record, "Slither," "The Descent," and "The Brood" are not mediocre. They were all tied to good directors (James Gunn, Neil Marshall, and David Cronenberg), and there were aspects of each that were worth admiring besides their monsters. Can't really say anything about the others listed cause I haven't seen them, although the monsters certainly do look awesome.

"Outlander", "The Cave", "The Relic" are definitely underrated. Add mention of "Mimic", "Deep Rising", "Pitch Black", "Solomon Kane", "The Mist", "Monsters", "Life", "Underwater", and "Love & Monsters". The upcoming "Monster Hunter" looks to be cool too.

Relic was indeed underrated, but it was also badly rewritten from book to screenplay. The Kothoga was the tribe who "created" the creature M'Bwun for one thing. Not to mention altering or killing characters needed to create viable sequels. The authors have said they regretted selling the rights, but it was their first dealing with Hollywood and didn't know what they were getting into. Could have been so much more considering how interconnected most of Preston and Childs novels are.

The Descent mediocre? It's a splendid example of a good horror movie: take out the horror elements and you will still have a great story.

@Bobby Harvill Oh, and not the rivalry between Sarah and Juno over Juno sleeping with her late husband, on top of Sarah having lost him and their daughter? The claustrophobia? The fact that the caves are uncharted and no one knows a way out? Lots of non-monster related stories there.

@Bobby Harvill I mean part of the point of decent is that the monsters were in the ladies head, and she was just killing everyone around her. At least it was until the sequel came out.

Agree. It's still one of my favourites, of course with the original ending & not the garbage US one. There are plenty of other elements with the different relationships with the women that you could take out the monsters & still have a decent movie.

I think it is a disservice to call a lot of these films 'mediocre', many of them were quite good, some are well known and highly praised, and some are under-the-radar type movies. My favorites on here were The Relic, Monster, The Descent, Mermaid-She Creature, and The Brood. I had forgotten that I've seen Mermaid-She Creature. I'm glad The Brood, was mentioned, that movie is usually forgotten.

The Kothoga started off human as well, it wasn’t demon. He was a professor at the museum that was studying a tribe in South America (I believe) and they fed him something on a leaf that turned him into the Kothoga. The Relic is one of my favorite monster movies of all time 💯

I agree! It was directed by James Gunn, who went on to make "Super" and a little film called "Guardians of the Galaxy." It's a quirky gem of a movie, and there's more to recommend it than the ever-evolving Grant monster, which is admittedly pretty awesome.

The Brood has to be Cronenberg's most disturbing movie. The themes of total breakdown of family and mind, matricide, child-beating... christ, it was heart-wrenching when I first saw it and I don't think I could see it again. I mean, it's so believable if you take the Don't Look Now creatures out.

I realize I'm 4 months too late to probably be seen by you guys, but I just had to comment on something. I just recently discovered your channel and the content I've seen consistently from you all has been top notch and extremely nostalgic for a creature feature lover like me. Thanks for that. However, at 6:05 where you introduce the Kothoga from the movie The Relic, it needs to be pointed out who really designed the creature. Some credit definitely goes to the VFX team but you also need to give Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child credit as well since it was almost word for word how they described it in the book. As a matter of fact, it's the only thing from the book to make it in the movie other than the first death. Even the location was changed. I ended up walking out of the theater in disgust a third through the movie since I was rooting for the monster and knew it was going to have some spectacular death unlike the one it got in the novel, simply because Hollywood. They shit all over one of my favorite horror novels but, hey, they made a nice looking monster at least. Pfft.

Bat r scorched beast, yetti big foot , even the tentacle ones are the centaurs. or the alien ones from mothership zeta. Even the Relic ones is lik supermultant hound or yao gua. lotta pop culture monsters represented cameos in Fallout. never seen one or two of these movies, thx for the recommendation 👍. I'm so happy to see my favorite head-chompy mutant hyena on here. The Relic is great. Outlander was really good too, in my opinion. I wouldn't say either film was mediocre. I tend to judge "monster" movies by the metric of 'if you replaced the monster with a human villain, would it still work/be enjoyable' & both The Relic & Outlander would still be enjoyable films if the monsters were instead skilled, frighteningly intelligent human monsters. She-Creature was an interesting take on merfolk. I thought it was pretty damn cool.
