As a guy who used to do some comic art, Batman who laughs seems to really just be an excuse to draw Batman’s costume and jokers mouth a billion times because they’re just cool, fun symbols that are easy to draw and be expressive with. But it can get really masturbatory. The count of how many joker grins are featured throughout this video is pretty insane. It would be alot of artists dream Kobe no question.

I'm glad to finally understand this plot, but honestly, just like everything nowadays they didn't know when to stop and It just went too far, to the point of turning ridiculous and kinda stupid, the plot was great with him "dying" in the cave in, everything after that it's just silly , I'll forever believe this: "multiverse" bullshit was the worst thing to happen to comicbooks

Multiverses work in comics for purely practical reasons. They’re weekly or monthly stories. There’s an established way characters can behave. Eventually you start to run out of ideas or at the very least you want to try something new, say you want to do a story where Batman is a vampire? You can’t really do that in the main story, so you do it in a standalone. I believe it was called elseworlds in DC. Then as a neat narrative way of sort of making all these iterations canon, you create your multiverse. I think that’s fine, and the occasional multiverse event that actually changes the canon like Flashpoint is great. The problem is that it’s become a crutch for lazy story telling. A weird attempt to add complexity where there doesn’t need to be any. A multiverse event should feel special. It should be rare. Now it feels like it’s everywhere, it’s totally lost it’s impact Want to bring back a dead character? Multiverse Want a nice deus ex machina? Multiverse Character popular and you don’t want to write them out of the main story? Multiverse. MCU has been especially bad for this. I firmly believe that their multiverse isn’t what they wanted to do, it’s just the only way they could shoe horn the x-men into the main continuity. A smaller team like FF you can just pop them in, they didn’t have powers when all the avengers stuff was happening it’s fine. But x-men? Mutants? They’re an entire species of human, millions of them worldwide. You can’t do 10 mcu movies and never even mention them so how do you get them in? Multiverse. As a result it’s all just felt so rushed and boring.

My interpretation about this character always was a Batman who has no more codes and that’s insane like Joker. But there’s one thing… HE’S NOT JOKER! He’s Bruce Wayne without his codes and insane… And evil, of course. But he has no one to impress, like Joker had Batman. I always saw him as a guy who took out the threats to him is his world just to join Barbatos because he knew what he was capable of and wanted to join an actual good story. That’s why he submits do Barbatos, I always felt he wanted to be a part of an interesting story rather then just kill everyone. Why would he be so loyal do Barbatos but decides to eliminate Perpetua? Besides… You can do one thing one too many times before it gets boring… and saturated But then he became a Joker-wanna-be with a God Complex and not Bruce Wayne anymore. He’s not Batman anymore. Nor the Batman Who Laughs. He’s just Joker in a batsuit… And worse That’s why I like his ending in Zero Point, he gave the idea he can now look for stories that actually amuse him. I’m not saying he should stop being a killer, but he’s not Joker for God’s sake. So I think he would just look for a story that he likes rather than wanting to take over shit, THAT’S NOT EVEN JOKER OR BATMAN But that’s just me… What are your thoughts?

The tortured rictus is obviously a nod to Gwynplaine in The Man Who Laughs but I really don't think the creators understood the meaning of that title... "The Man Who Laughs" is not Gwynplaine himself, it's a comment about the stark nature of events unfolding in the narrative and specifically a reference to the ending of the story which should not leave anyone laughing. It's one of the bleakest most heart-wrenching finales in all of literature.

Between The Batman Who Laughs, and especially with the Darkest Knight and Lobo, I think the writers went absolutely power-crazy. Making characters who are basically invincible, beyond clever, impossible to defeat, and capable of killing any other being. It gets to the point where instead of cool storytelling, It is ridiculous and not awesome. I like when they hint at ultra-powerful beings that are there but mysterious. Not like this!

The Batman Who Laughs knew that which is why he attacked Superman on a conceptual level, he did this to Batman as well but he underestimated Wonder Woman who showed her worth and eventually defeated him alongside the efforts of Batman and Superman. Superboy Prime really though was the MVP, if it wasn't for him, The Darkest Knight would have been further empowered by his Last 52 Infinite Multiverse and would have beaten Hope Wonder Woman.
