This song really defines Marvin Gaye's career and is part of the iconic soundtrack to the 1970's. The entire album is a masterpiece of social commentary and every song is worth a listen. We are particularly focused on the environment today so take a listen to "Mercy, Mercy Me (the Ecology)" which speaks to how we were polluting our air and water even back then.

The 60's were full of chaos and confusion and FEAR. Marvin was SO smooth and his voice so appealing that he drew a lot of us white folks in and made us think about "what's going on ". If you haven't played it already, my favorite is his duet with Tammy Terrell "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing". Much love and all success to you guys. I love watching you. It gives me hope for the future of this country, and there hasn't been a lot of people out there who make me hopeful. Sorry to run on so long, and THANK YOU.

It’s said Barry Gordy, Jr., didn’t want Marvin to make this album, he thought the song topics were too controversial. Marvin insisted, got it made and the result was this masterpiece. Couple of other Marvin songs to check out “Chained” and “California Soul” with Tammi Terrell. Really enjoy your reactions to all types of music. You help expand my music appreciation too.

Just a little background on this song & album, Gaye had to fight with Barry Gordy to make this album because it was a protest album about the Vietnam war & inner city plight. Gordy didn’t want to get political but Gaye felt it was too important of a message to ignore.

Hey Twins it's so good to see you! I'm glad you listened Marvin Gaye. He was a top singer/writer/producer at Motown. This song is so relevant today because the same issues we're facing today was happening in the '60's and '70's. He was a visionary of his time. He bumped heads with Berry Gordy the president of Motown because Mr. Gordy felt he was being too militant and was concerned about the Motown brand. Marvin went ahead and did his thing and we all have benefitted from it, and so did Motown. He put out some awesome music!

Saw him in concert at the Forum in Inglewood in summer of 1973, I had just graduated from high school. What's Going On almost didn't get released. The studio didn't want him to sing songs about politics or the reality of what was going on at the time. The studio execs didn't think anyone would like accept this type of song. It was an immediate hit and he followed it up with a few other related songs. Marvin and Al Green are my all time favorite artists
