Mary Poppins Returns is a 2018 American musical fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall, with a screenplay written by David Magee and a story by Magee, Marshall, and John DeLuca. Based on the book series Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers, the film is a sequel to the 1964 film Mary Poppins, and stars Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, and Meryl Streep in supporting roles.

The original Mary Poppins was the first Disney film to be nominated for Best Picture. It didn't win, from what I remember, but the fact that it was nominated is commendable.

Ironically, Julie Andrews wom best actress against Audrey Hepburn for my fair lady, which was based on the musical the Andrews starred in. The role was given to Hepburn for star power, but Julie had the last laugh.

This movie would change drastically from the fewest minor changes. First off, if the kids had had any interaction with the banker before the whole vase/wolf sequence. Then if the wolf HAD turned out to be rather nice, or even if he was still stealing stuff or whatever but hated himself for it. Then it turns out the wolf was still a Poppins/dream twisted respresentation of the banker, who had lied a little but hadn’t gone full evil, instead knowing the Banks family had somewhere else to stay and believing the bank itself needed the money from that loan back, or the money from the house. Long and short if they hadn’t madethebanker or the wolf evil, just more-or-less decent men doing bad things because circumstances have gone beyond their control, and if the kids had interacted with thebanker before meeting the wolf and it was used to open their eyes that maaybe they indeed should not judge abook by its cover, the movie would be a good deal better. Still issues, but it would be a massive step.

I have two ideas to make this movie better: 1. Mary Poppins is Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy. 2. In one of the scenes when they are in the bowl Leslie Odom Jr. appears instead of the wolf and Lin Manuel Miranda's character goes up to him and they start singing "Aaron Burr, sir?" By the end of the bowl scenes they have a duel

Seemed a huge plothole to me, Michael Banks says he just imagined all the magical things he did with Mary Poppins. and all that.. Yet knows full well she hasnt supposedly aged all that time so must know theres something magic about her so whys it hard to believe what he went thru with her as a kid

Because we can’t have a parent who actually remembers and believes in all the magical adventures they had as children, that might be interesting and original! Forced drama and bland repeats of the original movie it is! Although granted, she looks nothing like the original Mary Poppins, maybe he doesn’t believe it’s her XD

@@RynDummer Well... it also kind of supports abit of the original movie where when the kids mention her winning the horse race, she denies it. So... maybe it was to keep them on level ground instead of having their imagination run wild? I'm not sure but it was a thought that crossed my mind.

I'm probably in a minority on this, but I actually have a big soft spot for this movie. I love the original Mary Poppins, so my reaction should probably be closer to Doug's, and I know it's certainly a flawed film, but there's just so many little things that made me smile that when I add them all up I have to admit I kinda love it- a return of hand drawn animation that's reminiscent of the 60s-70s Disney style, the songs, the Dick van Dyke and Angela Lansbury cameos, and I'm definitely alone on this- but it didn't feel to me like the filmmakers were trying to "fix" anything from the original (like the Beauty and the Beast remake- which I am not a fan of, or the Aladdin remake- which I actively hate). Arguments can definitely be made that there's too much repeat, or that the new elements are too simplified, but I did get the feeling that individual teams of artists, like the animators, musicians, even some actors, really did it out of love for the original. Doug & Rob's criticisms are totally valid, I just find myself really endeared by the film for reasons I can't fully explain. Maybe I'm just a sucker.

You're not alone, I thought it was nice too, not as good as the original, but not really bad, it's still a Disney movie and a "bad" Disney movie is still a huge step up from a really bad movie from other bad movies.

Raun Carswell I can see that point. We all agree it certainly doesn’t sound British! Even Aussies doing a brit accent doesn’t quite sound right sometimes let’s be honest. I think I pick it up a lot cause I love red dwarf and Monty Python and Mighty Boosh. Oh and Doctor Who. I think when you hear genuine accents enough you really can hear when they’re not? Including your own to a degree

@@mckenzie.latham91 Pardon my intrusion but Nanny Mcphee despite having a similar premise is not a Mary Poppins rip off. It was based off another book series starting in 1964 called Nurse Matilda. I know P.L. Travers wrote mary poppins first and it *might* be coincidental that it started the year the movie was released, but the idea of a magical caregiver/ guardian is as old as literature itself. Sorry to be like that, just bugged me a bit. :)

Theory: Mary Poppins is Scarlet Witch. After the loss of Vision, Wanda never recovered, and began to yearn for caring for children of her own. And to get away from the chaos of the modern day, she took one of the last Pym particles, went back to 1910 Britain, adopted their accent, and started a new life as a nanny. *BOOM*

The movie “Saving Mr. Banks” Show to the revolution that the movie and book Mary Poppins was NOT solely about whimsy for the children. She had showed up to try and help saving Mr. Banks. Was any of that shown in “Mary Poppins returns?”

The adults in Mary Poppins Returns are the kids from the first film lol Though to be fair, in the books, Mary Poppins apparently has nothing better to do than to help this one and only family several bloody times.

Someone random I was meaning was there any of the same kind of theme. Like what is she trying to help the now grown ups how to re-capture their own youth? Or was what she was doing ultimately helping them out of a situation? Sure it would be retreading the first movie in a sequel but at least it would show some consistency.

Nazo- kage Oh thematically wise. Well yeah, Micheal is despondent over his wife’s death and his house is in danger of foreclosing. The children set out to save their home and their father with the help of Mary Poppins and Jack. There is a theme of him having to recapture his childhood and therefore his happiness.

The first STAR WARS, "A New Hope", is another one of those films that feels maybe half the length that is actually is, but "Phantom Menace" feels twice as long as it actually is.

Made me chuckle when you called Lin-Manuel Miranda ‘Gizmoduck.’ You should do a follow up episode to your DuckTales review. I remember you posted on Facebook a while back that you were getting frustrated that they weren’t going on adventures enough in the episodes. From what I read, part of that was the fact they aired episodes out of order early on. Since Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby have more distinct personalities this time, they aired the more character based ones first to re-introduce them to the audience. Since then, there have been a lot of adventure based episodes and old characters brought back, and I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

So, here is my problem with this. It's very obviously called first viewing in the title, but in the video itselfe they call it the SECOND viewing. I feel betrayed. Betrayed I say, down to the core of my very being. This was a great video and nice to hear more about your points of view on the movie in more detail from both of you.

Fun fact: for every time you watch this film, another child appears in the family. This is designed to seem unnoticeable, with the help of the clever disguise of their lack of a distinctive or distinguishable personally. When the number reaches 200 they invade our world through the TV and multiply even more. Luckily, not that many people have ever seen, or will see, this film.

I really wish the story had been different, like in Doug's Fanscription version. Firstly, and most importantly, there should have been one child. Also, the villain was so bland.

i didn't know ppl hated on the soundtrack...that's the best part of the movie. trip a light fantastic is my fav when i'm feeling down. i think emily did a decent job as mary poppins, and i love lin-manuel miranda. i think georgie is adorable.

If I could add one thing to this movie, it would be that they literally turn time back and you see every one move backwards and it undoes some thing bad that happened before.
