Maybe Donald didn't go to the movies. He could have lied about it because his father most likely told him not to go see his dying brother. My guess is no one actually saw him at the movies? Either way, sad and tragic. Lessons to learn from this: Study and recognize narcissistic traits and actions in people, if you do RUN! Never get involved with them on any level, they cannot be fixed.

@SD Sproat A narcissistic family is a technical term used in psychology for a type of dysfunctional family. It does not mean everybody in the family is a narcissist but that a narcissist has a powerful position that defines the family dynamic. In my family, while there are plenty of narcissist types... In my direct vicinity it is my Nanna is the narcissist. My aunt is the golden child, my uncle the ignored child, and my Mum the scapegoat. These are actual roles recognised in a narcissistic family if you look it up. And they all have devastating effects. Mum and my brother and I, didn't speak to my aunt, the "golden child" or her kids for almost a decade. This was because she was behaving in a narcissistic way and had a co-dependant relationship with my Nanna and so behaved horrifically to Mum. I have basically no relationship with my uncle because he essentially cut-off from the family as a teenager by getting into a controlling relationship. I witnessed Nanna abuse Mum my whole life as she was the scapegoat. And had to deal with the fallout as a little kid. And we, her grandkids, all got abused by her too whether directly or indirectly. My family also has a lot of wealth, and all of it was stolen by a few family members. And boy, are those who took it truly horrible people. I could go on and on about how dysfunctional my family is. Narcissistic families are incredibly toxic. And if the cycle isn't broken it repeats itself over and over. In the Trump family it seems clear the narcissist was the grandfather figure, and this has been passed down to Trump. Her family sounds like the scapegoat branch of the family.

Many families have always dysfunctional. The times when the Vietnam war veterans came back to the US, the times when war veterans came back from WW2, the times when the economy was not at its best, etc. Poverty, PTSD, post-war re-adaptation, all of these create dysfunctional families. Needless to say, in the middle ages, homicide was the most common way of dying.. I bet most families that grew in violent environments like those of the middle ages were some of the most dysfunctional families in the history of humanity. By history standards, we are not living in the most dysfunctional times, and we are not having the most quantity of dysfunctional families either.

The fact that she says she handed over financial records to a newspaper and they hugged her is interesting- she thinks they love her? No they just want to bury Trump- she was just a resource to them- perhaps she is craving attention? She was definitely happy to visit the white house in 2017 and sit in his chair. Hmm.

@@mattmcraethat's old school thinking and much research has been done. It's been discovered that genetics play a bigger role in sociopathic behaviors than previously thought. If a parent has antisocial, alcoholic or sociopathic tendancies the child is at higher risk of developing sociopathic behaviors of their own. Whether a sociopath is born or made is still up for debate, as reaching a diagnosis depends on the individual in question. A recent study reveals as much as 50% of causes are based in genetics. The remaining percentage, then, is left up to environmental factors not yet understood. What is certain, per the study, is that being dealt genes that lend themselves to sociopathy really does make a difference.

@Jose SA Just because there's no such thing as a perfectly healthy family, doesn't mean that there's no meaningful and significant differences between different types and severity of abuse. Having a flawed parent who's neglectful but still cares about the child isn't exactly healthy. But it's no where near as unhealthy as a personality disordered parent who physically and mentally abuses a child for their own enjoyment. Both are unhealthy but the former still has a much better chance at becoming a healthy and well adjusted person.

My business partner sat with her dying mother alone. She has five sibling, unable to be there. Everyone handles things differently. What I know and understand from personal experience that it is almost impossible to escape from a dysfunctional family or parent without adopting some of their dysfunctions; because if one is a survivor you learn to play the game by internalizing the rules. My father's love was conditional ... always. He almost never said he loved me. He only showed affection and praise when I made him proud by top grades, getting a great job, by making a lot of money, or getting an award of some sort. For anything else his demeanor was flat; almost dismissive. God forbid I did anything that damaged that pride. He always like to hit me in the face, head, or between my shoulder blades for anything. And I mean anything. If I accidentally dropped or spilled something I got the back of my head slapped. In order to survive these things I had to become tough inside and contain my emotions. So it was no wonder that some would say I am a bit too direct and even seem cold. Not like I did this intentional. It's just that in order to survive I developed this part of me to take a hit and keep on going. So I''m sure there is quite a bit of dysfunction within Mary, but I wouldn't blame her. She had to survive. And surviving often comes at a cost of something within any of us.

I hear you. That’s the grief we carry when we come from dysfunction. But don’t miss out on the flip side that’s there which is healing, faith and the legacy of changing the narrative. When we heal it ripples out to those around us. Learning healthy boundaries and truth and how to love ourselves. Yummy stuff!! Find your light, you know that one that your father denied was there. I imagine it’s pretty spectacular.

It's so difficult to recover from dysfunctional families with an extremely abusive, narcissist parent (like my father). Idk how I survived, tbh, but I'm sure however I did it, its effects probably aren't healthy. I'm terrified of the latent effects it might have on me. Was seeing a therapist and trying to find joy in my hobbies, education, and living.

I borrowed Mary's tell-all from the library, and found it to be well written and profound. She seems to have a controlled temper that is rare among the Trump family. In effect, it is her ability to reflect on the past, humanize the villains of her life, and seek understanding from others that give her character of her own. No populist undertones. Although she is in awe of the power of the Trump clan patriarchy, she looked for their flaws and found them. What would a Trump family rebuttal look like, if they wrote about her flaws and shortcomings? They would not because they already wrote her off when they removed her from the will. Her tell all was not Mary Trump on the offensive... This was a family member who realized she was not in "the circle of trust", and came to terms with it. She grew a pair.

Cockeyed Optimista I find that it’s a combination of her cadence and maybe her lack of urgency in the interviews. Whoever prepped her for PR, didn’t cover all their angles where she could be attacked and even taken out of context for political gain and further dismissal of what she has to say about Trump. Maybe I pick up on a lot of this stuff as I once worked in PR in New York City and I have family in Canadian politics....or maybe I’m biased after watching hours of body language experts dissect Prince Andrew’s horrendous interview lol.
