Surgeon reacts to Marzia being 'Ashamed' of Part of Her Face due to asymmetry. Dr. Linkov explains how asymmetry is perceived as more beautiful as proven by conducted studies (check for links below). As covered in the @Inside Edition : "PewDiePie’s wife Marzia opened up about her insecurities on Instagram, revealing the right side of her face that she says she was “ashamed” of."

Another thing to note: We're used to seeing our own faces in the mirror, so when it's flipped, the asymmetry becomes twice as bad to us as other people see it. Don't fret over it!

Asymmetry is the reason we prefer the way we look in a mirror compared to a photo. We get used to one side of asymmetry and when it flips our brain kinda freaks out as if something happened to our face.

@perperperpen
@perperperpen 2 жыл бұрын
But that could also be due to the uncanny-ness of a perfectly symmetrical facial expression. I think if a perfectly symmetrical human did exist, its not like their face would constantly be a mirror image on both sides, because they would have a facial expression. They would just look very beautiful.

I really appreciate how as a facial plastic surgeon you are actually promoting body positivity and self acceptance of ones self rather than doing what so many other surgeons do, pick out imperfections to fix. I have been so self conscious about my nose, side profile. after a the cartilage at the tip was damaged during a karate tournament. As I live in the UK the NHS won't repair it as it's considered cosmetic. For me it both, as I can't breath out my right nostril due to a deviated septum, which the ENT consultant did offer to fix, but not my tip. This video has definitely helped me re think my nose. I am what I am. I would love my old nose back but it's not as bad I think it is. Us humans project way too much negativity onto ourselves. Thanks again for a great video. Love your content. Also think you are beautiful 😁

As a registered nurse, In critical care I really enjoy how you break things down and explain things in detail. Very educational. Makes me consider doing my nurse prescribing course so I can learn about cosmetic practice and provide treatment. I have a fairly good knowledge base of facial anatomy; however I need to learn more though before I even think about becoming an Aesthetic nurse.
@ahumanaperson
@ahumanaperson Жыл бұрын
I’m in the Uk and have had two septorhino’s on the nhs. The second was a revision. It’s very possible to do but you have to fight for it. My story is slightly different, I broke my nose as a child and drs refused to operate as I was too young, then I also had to wait for jaw surgery due to an underbite which they won’t operate until at least 21 (as the bones continue to develop into your mid/late 20’s). I was told there’s no point doing the nose until the jaws were done as the jaw surgery would affect the nasal area. But once I had the jaw surgery I pushed at every followup that I needed the rhino because I couldn’t breathe. Sure I wanted an aesthetic difference (but at that point I hadn’t breathed through my nose for years so I didn’t know what I was missing, I just wanted it to look nicer). Then after the first rhino I ‘got greedy’ since the symmetry hadn’t improved significantly (but by then I could breathe perfectly) so I insisted it didn’t look right. Once they operate and create an aesthetic difference they take on responsibility if you become disillusioned/ ‘traumatised’ by the change. They need you to be happy with the results/ have realistic expectations. The reason I mention this is because it’s something they don’t tell you- getting your septum fixed will often change the ‘cosmetic’ appearance of your nose, it could become bigger or narrower etc. So the surgeon will most often have to make slight aesthetic adjustments, and if they’re nice/ like their job/ have some compassion, they will happily make changes that you politely request (within reason) -like I had a slight ‘hump’ shaved down. At the end of the day it’s being done by a surgeon with aesthetic training alongside reconstructive, who does cosmetic procedures often, they’re not going to walk out of a consult without finding out from you personally what the issue is and whether you’re prepared for the possibility of an aesthetic change, where you can insert “this ___ also bothers me, is there anything that can be done?”. I know it sounds manipulative but there’s no other way to get nhs help without being overly dramatic about your symptoms. Tell your gp, dentist, whoever, and insist on a referral. As someone who hated their nose (it was an ugly useless object) and now can breathe with a closed mouth I cannot stress how amazing it is to actually breathe through your nose, it changes your posture, your fitness, the way you talk, the list goes on. Fight for yourself, good luck.

it didn't really showed in the photos she posted but i believe it's mostly because of her nose, she had a nose surgery because it was hard for her to breath, and i believe after that it ended up a bit croked, she made a video about it many years ago but i believe she deleted it. @@johnhomie609 she had a rhinoplasty to fix her deviated septum which caused her breathing issues, and the fillers were (I believe) for her top lip to balance it out with her lower lip (since her top lip was thinner) cause she had insecurities about it. When she talked about her rhinoplasty, they offered to do work on the shape of her nose but she declined and just fixed the septum. Things like that are only what you notice since you are so used to seing your reflection of your face. Other people are used to seeing your real face and would prefer it. So if you are about to send someone a selfie, you should really send them a picture of your face but flipped to the version you don't like. If you send them the "mirror" face, then they would see the face they are not used to, like you do when you see your "real" face. But in reality, even that difference is not that big merely because of the fact that they are not you. They don't see your face all the time on their phones, in mirrors and in reflections like you do. Your brain compensates for all the imperfections and asymmetries, so when you see an image of your face that is different, those imperfections are hugely exaggerated to you. But for other people, it's not a big deal.

It’s nice to know what studies show that some asymmetry is preferred. Wish more people know and realize that
@lunaproductions13

Nope, she had a deviated septum fixed. Her nose was already crooked and she specifically asked the surgeon to try and keep her natural nose shape as much as possible which is why it was still crooked after and ultimately after healing the visual changes were pretty minor. There was no nose surgery before this and no trauma. A re-upload of her original video about the surgery is up on youtube.

One side definitely looks better tho 🙈 so I really get what Marzia must be going through. I hope we all just learn to love ourselves 💜

Great video Dr. Gary! I have a pretty asymmetrical face myself (more asymmetrical than most) and I never had an insecurity until getting a consultation from a maxillofacial surgeon. He told me that facial symmetry equated to beauty and that he could give be "better" results with double jaw surgery. It sounded horrific so I didn't go through with it, and now I'm so glad I didn't! More doctors and surgeons should aspire to be like you and seek to give advice that's in the patient's best interest, not instill insecurity in hopes of them scheduling a procedure.

More than asymmetry I would describe it as "personality". Something that makes you look more friendly or human, or whose facial expressions are easier to relate to. To me Marzia is one of the most beautiful girls I've seen on the internet, whenever she posts pictures on Instagram I'm just starstruck by her beauty as well as her style. I hope she can battle her insecurities - especially because with her, there really is no reason to worry. The lenghts she went to "hide" the asymmetry on her face sounded like she had one eye on her cheekbone and the other on her forehead lol I think her insecurities stem from the inside rather than the outside. I understand what she feels like but I also think she has absolutely no reason to worry lol

I love yt videos like this that address issues that aren't even at the forefront of our minds culturally. For a long time during my teenage years to early 20's I was unhappy with my nose my teeth and the overall asymmetry of my face. I turned 30 this year... and I guess I'm lucky because as time has gone on I have felt more and more secure with my appearance, to the point that i barely even think about it. Strangely enough I think that's largely due to the fact that our Society has become so obsessed by it that it had the opposite effect on me and completely disillusioned me to the obsession with looks. For whatever reason I became way more focused with the internal aspects of myself, as opposed to the external. Maybe I'm just lucky, as a lot of the things we're influenced by choose us... versus us choosing them. But the way that I think of it is in the grand scheme of life, how big of a problem is my nose. Insignificant isn't a big enough word to explain it. Not to delegitimize the people who really struggle with their appearance, because I know that struggle. That struggle is real and can be utterly heartbreaking. But in my estimation, a lot of people out there just need somebody to tell them that they're beautiful, as corny as it sounds, we all really are.

One of my eye sits way higher than the other to the point that several people in my life have pointed it out spontaneously. The symmetrical face trend on tik tok with the reverse filter has made me even more self conscious about it. When I first tried it, I thought there was a distorting effect on the flipped image and when I came to realize it’s just the way my face looks it made me feel so depressed. Since it comes from my bone structure (my eye sockets are misaligned) I don’t think there’s anything I can even do about it surgically. That being said, I’ve noticed Marzia’s asymmetry from day 1 but it never made me think of her as less beautiful. I’m trying to extend myself the same grace though it can be very difficult.
