@NYCHeavyHitz212 ACTUALLY the target audience is like 13 to 25 for Hip-hop. So 15 or 16 is LITERALLY the TARGET AUDIENCE. I've got cousins your age, I get it. But you guys were old enough to live through the KRS ONE BIG DADDY KANE SLICK RICK ERA. THAT was more your era. 1995 to 1998 were my teenage years and Hip-hop caters to that exact market.

People have a lot of revisionist history when it comes to Mase. Or are too young to remember. People act like Jay was a platinum artist from the jump. Reasonable Doubt is a classic. But it actually took 8 years to become a platinum album. Hov didn’t reach the next level until Hard Knock Life in 98. 97 was Mase’s year. 96 was obviously still Big and Pac. But in 97 Mase was outselling everyone.

This was an excellent video and he really summarized it perfectly. As an 40 year old Hip Hop head who lived through that era this brought back many fond memories. I Will add this though, Jay always had his eye on the throne. When he released the single The City Is Mine in Feb 98 and he said “you held down long let me take those reins/and just like your spirit the commission remains” “I’m the vocal point like Biggie in his prime/but on the low though, the city is mine”. Hov caught major backlash because cats felt that Biggie (R.I.P) hadn’t been deceased long enough for someone to be talking like that. That’s why on Ether Nas said “first Biggie’s man but then you nerve to say that you’re better Big/dick sucking lips why don’t you let the late great veteran live”. Cats always felt someway about Jay making it no secret that he wanted the King Of Ny title so shortly after Big passed.

Jay from the intro on Vol.1 just shits on industry rappers and how broke they are, "yo don't listen to rappers, they're dying to floss" is such a cold bar, it's a running theme in the album. we forget he came in at 26, he's literally the blueprint of grown man raps, the perspective, the replay value on his albums is so undeniable, 90% of his catalogue aged gracefully. in a time where rap was a young man's game filled w/ perspective of 21-year-olds

This was a good video. One thing I think was overlooked is that Big was gonna start his own group with Jay, “ The Commission”. I’m pretty sure Jay wouldn’t of been kool with that being under a Bad Boy umbrella. I also have one of the original Jay reasonable doubt albums and on the back there’s a company (distribution I believe) called “Freeze” that was pressing the albums. Bad Boy is a way bigger conglomerate. In those days of hip hop there was always a kinda quiet Beef between Brooklyn vs Harlem that most don’t know about, aren’t from this side or aren’t old enough. Good vid

Ayoo not for nothing, but this video was ELITE, relived mid to late 90’s with these 2 NYC legends right here. You always heard faint whispers about their beef but wasn’t concrete

Thank you for telling it like it is. I’ve had countless arguments about Hov and he was very inferior to not only Big but even Ma$e. Reasonable Doubt wasn’t a big hit. It was overlooked. Nobody was checking for Hov until Big died.

It’s not easy to find Hip-Hop channels where the narrator is a respectable voice of the culture who clearly do their research with love and passion. Thank you!!

I never knew Mase & Jay had beef, or that Ride or Die was about him. I always thought the “I make more money off your album that you” was a diss toward Nas, & a “Dead Presidents” reference. Very interesting video 👍🏾.

Yes, this was incredible. This takes me back to the 90s and all of this and that was going on, in front of people and behind the scenes. Now I'm not sure if you touched on this one or not, but do you remember when the Wu had beef with the Puffster?
