Good for him. Watching the show didn't make me want to go to magic shows and spoil them. It made me realize that magic shows really are an art, that have simple explanations but take years to perfect. I can do a few card tricks and I get a kick out of seeing someone else do them even if I know the solution. The guy is right. It really isn't about knowing the secret (because, come on, we all know he isn't actually summoning spirits or practicing witchcraft) so much as enjoying the show. He's an excellent performer, and I hope he keeps it up.

I think what he says around 2:25-2:45 is dead on. Just like learning a few card tricks, knowing how a couple of these are done doesn't ruin a love of magic, but increase it. And the real "magic" is in the performance of the artist, as a magician.
@miguelelzorro6 жыл бұрын
Yes, a couple of card tricks, but not 100 of professional tricks that will ruin the performance for professional magicians. It is not magic if you know the secret. Then it's just a simple trick. You won't go WOW if you know the secret. You are bored if you go out to see a magic show and you know how it is done! You want to see magic where you can say "Wow, how did he do it..."

People are coming up with new tricks all the time, good ones. And they sell them on reputable sites. It wasn’t going to die out. And knowing the trick does effect the performance regardless how good the performance is. Because you can’t see it the same way.

@@JanieHellion Correct. He established himself as a dove magician and sleight of hand guy. But even Penn & Teller had respect for him and his skills. While some magicians were upset at him, and some people tried to sue him (and the show) all the high end magicians had no problem with this sketch. After this show he had many options, including his own shows at Vegas, as well as continuing on as the Masked Magician, but instead he decided to travel abroad and has been wildly successful, especially in Brazil as "Mister M."

"The art of magic is for everyone, and especially for you kids, cause you are the future of magic"... I was 10 years old when I saw this show in 1999 and I fell in love with magic tricks immediately. I dreamt of becoming a magician, and till now I admire magic tricks and magicians. If there's someone who blames Val Valentino for ruining the art of magic by revealing the tricks, I claim it was him who brought me to the art of magic, and without him, I would never become such a huge fan of magic tricks. I watched this show over and over again when I was a child and I became almost obsessed with magic shows - it was the only thing that I watched on TV for years, I bought many books about learning the art of magic. It still brings tears in my eyes when I hear this speech of his, because after 18 years, I still remember every single word he said. I loved this show that much.

I remember when this episode aired he had a lot of magician's trying to sue him because they had to scrap acts from their routines. But honestly he's not wrong letting people in on the secrets and wanting to know how things work does increase the interest in audience. It also forces magician's to stop rehashing/rebranding the same crap and actually come up with original material.

These comments are funny. Has anyone heard of voice changing software? Everyone can be recognized by their voice by someone they know. Jeeezzz! T-Pain made a career with autotune. Voice distortion has been around over 30 years. SMH

This was one of the defining moments of my childhood. I loved magic a lot as a kid and watched it all the time when I could. NBC used to have the World's Greatest Magic specials the night before Thanksgiving from 94-98 then this came on in 1997 and really shook things up. They quit having those specials largely due to this show. I loved this show the best due to the tone and how they explained everything. The narrator was hilarious and Valentino did a good job and had a steady pace. It didn't ruin magic at all in fact it made me proud to say I loved it. I know the pros hated him for doing it but I sure don't. I was so sad as a kid when he unmasked and went away it was like a hero was gone. Wish they kept on doing them but I guess they were smart to end it. But still though I was so anxious and waited for ages to see this happen they did a great job promoting it too.

The "Sacred Riana" does tricks that are different but I'm sure the Masked Magician has shown how most of her tricks are done, especially the one where things move around in her doll house. I enjoyed your whole series and I continue to love magic after almost 60 years of being a fan.

@joshuaburba1048 Жыл бұрын
He makes a strong point when he says David Copperfield, Lance Berkman, and Penn and Teller are the true artists. I've known for years how many of their tricks are done, but the insane speed and precision with which they do their tricks is amazing. This guy is right. I can know how the trick is done and still be amazed at the artistry of its performance. David Copperfield's metamorphosis trick is a perfect example. I know exactly how it's done, but the speed of the change is just astonishing.
@subaruthug11 ай бұрын
I'll add something to one of your comments.........Val Valentino is also one of the true artists.

Just saw this, but I agree. I sort of equate it to professional wrestling in a sense. We as fans know it's scripted and pre-determined, but that doesn't take away from it. You knowingly check your suspension of disbelief at the door and experience highs and lows, like when the "hero" falls or when the underdog finally achieves his dream because it's all almost a performance art of sorts.

@tarahmcintyretm8 жыл бұрын
I have a few things to say about this, 1, at the start the narrator said you will hear him talk for the first time. at first it's not unreasonable to think anything of it but why a voice over/ voice changer? 2. why is there smoke? I think everyone who has seen an episode or two will have second thoughts as to whether or not this is real, magicians will obstruct view if they don't want someone to see whats really going on. 3. if he was wearing a whole head mask and taking it off, he would have messy hair, and maybe even some sweat. 4. if you look at the masked magician's suit it is considerably light grey, however without mask magician's suit is quite black. 5. if you also compare masked vs unmasked magician's shoulders , you will see the size difference and the way the suit fits...
