The best bang for your canning jar buck? Classico Spaghetti Sauce! Last week they were on sale for $1.49/ea. That’s a lot cheaper than most brands on their best day and a free 20 oz canning jar to boot! Who doesn’t use spaghetti sauce?

Instead of storing empty jars between use, fill them with sterile drinking water. Keeps the clean, provides emergency water.

My grandmother would put cow cream in a half gallon mason jar and shake until it turned into butter. Fill the jar from 1/2 to 3/4 full.

Great content. We use Mason Jars as water storage containers. Boil water, pour into jars, put in 180 degree water bath for about 15 minutes. There you have fresh canned H2O storage to last many years if stored in a cool, dark, dry place. Fresh canned water 💧, Friend.

Great video. Thanks, Les. Canning/Mason jars are also great for making "meals in a jar" meals, where you layer dried foods for rehydration later. Kind of like homemade Mountain House meals where you control the ingredients, although they have a limited shelf-life of about 7 years. You're spot on in their usefulness and versatility. I keep a good supply of them on hand, from half pint to 2 quart. To those that don't have any but plan to, stock up on them when they're available. Availability has been hit and miss since the supply chain problems of recent years, and we could get back to that situation at any time.

It's been my experience that even if you don't have the mason jar vacuum sealer attachment, if you fill the jar with oxygen absorbers the CCs of space left are so small that it doesn't noticeable reduce the effectiveness of those oxygen absorbers.

I lime the idea of canning sweet tea. Don't you save on space if you just store the bags and make it as it is needed. I could see making a few jars for picnics or travel though.

@alicerafferty9595 absolutely you'd save space by storing individual items, but we live rural and our power goes off frequently and my husband loves sweet tea and I love coffee...this way I can just heat my coffee and he can drink his tea.

Dry canning is when you put food in to either water bath or pressure can without liquid. The rice is vacuum sealed.
@alicerafferty9595
@alicerafferty9595 5 ай бұрын
Dry canning is when you put dry goods, such as beans or rice in your oven at at a low temperature for about and hour and seal the jar. A 200 degree temp should do it. You are talking about raw pack pressure canning like the canned chicken that was featured.

Thanks for sharing these tips, Chef Prepper! I don't have any Mason jars yet. I'll add them to my "To Buy" list. I've repurposed some Talenti gelato jars to hold hobby pieces, but I can see the benefits of glass over plastic for storing food. P.S. I tried Beanie Weenies. They ARE tasty. The beans have a pleasant taste and texture - not mushy or pellet-hard. The weiners are okay, but the beans get thumbs up. Thanks for that recommendation. Best wishes to the Chef Prepper clan.

G'day from Australia , the outback , i am eating 7 year old tomatoes home canned at present , the acidity helps , but thats the limit i'd say , the seeds are super soft and the texture a bit soft even fo maters but had a few jars that got warm next to a brick wall ( it gets hot here ) so they were spoiled after only 4 years , so keep them cool , if you can keep them cool, i reckon you'd get a few more years than my 7 here

I have my oxygen absorbers in a small mason jar but it is not vacuum sealed. Will the oxygen absorbers still be good?
@Nestergirl123
@Nestergirl123 5 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Best scenario is to have many in the sealed jar. They might "work" a tiny bit removing what little oxygen is in the jar but then they should be perfectly fine. Keep the lid on the jar and only open to add more or to remove one's you need.
@mevsm1
