My new book is out! It's called Massage Is Weird: massagesloth.com/book/
Here's a refresher on working with the face and scalp from a myofascial perspective. No oil needed!
The tissue here is thin but strong, consisting of lots of connective tissue and a bit of sheet-like muscle. As you work, think of dragging this sheets of myofascia along, creating traction all the way down the face. Feel for warming and softening of the tissues as you go.
I tend to use broad tools for the face (finger and thumb pads), and I draw the tissue at an oblique angle. Go slowly, letting the minimal oil and thick fascia determine the pace. Spread the frontal region, outline the eyebrows, and create traction in the jaw. Every technique can end up with some scalp or temple massage.
As you work into the scalp, consider transitioning to finger tips. This specific pressure can feel nice, and it won't pull the hair as much. Continue with that 45 degree angle, drawing the fascia superiorly. With each repetition, try to outline different features of the skull's landscape. You can turn the head to one side, supporting with your resting hand, to access the occipital region.
Let me know what you think!

Thk you again for such awesome instructions! Should you decide to do another face/scalp massage video - would you consider a client with very, very short hair so that we can continue to see you techniques (hands)? p.s. I still loved this!!

Thank you. Really enjoy your teachings, so informative and I learn something new every time! I have just began on my journey as a masseuse and Its really useful to have the details as it also educates the client..... This just occurred to me today following a session when asking if she wanted to book in again, I was asked the question, will it be of benefit to me.....? So, the next video is all about, The very many benefits of massage......❤

Do you take on clients? Because I'd really like this done! It looks so incredibly relaxing. I'm low key surprised that she didn't fall asleep! Lol! I've said this before but it bears repeating, I enjoy watching your videos. The way that you calmly explain the process and techniques that you use is refreshing.☺

Can I ask when you have a client do they book a general “full body massage” averaging on 60/90 mins or do you customise your treatments per client/booking depending on what they present with? I’m just thinking 60 mins I find very short to incorporate the full body especially if they are presenting with issues on particular areas. Any suggestions on how best to offer these services? Thank you in advance 😊🙏🏻

This video is amazing. I have had bells palsy for 5 years now. I think this might be a good option? What do u think ? Thanks in advance.
@MassageSloth
@MassageSloth 4 жыл бұрын
I've seen a number of clients recover from Bell's palsy symptoms under my care. I can't say for sure whether my work helped (the symptoms are usually self-resolving, so I don't want to take the credit), but I feel fairly sure that I didn't impede their progress :) My recommendation as a massage therapist would be to try some gentle, slow facial work on a daily basis and see how things progress. I've got a fairly recent video on TMJ self-massage (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esBdfMl_rraqiIE.html) that is a good example of how I'd approach self-massage in such a situation (or you can follow along with this face massage video). Basically, work gently, give your facial nerves some new and interesting stimulus, and see what they do with that input. If there's ever any pain, either back off or discontinue. Feel free to get back to me and let me know how it goes!

A question Mr Massage S: how about myofascial release for the tongue? For singers?
@EmorettaRobinson
@EmorettaRobinson 4 жыл бұрын
I need this done on me. Are you a massage therapist that is not taking on new clients or are you an instructor? Also is that normal for massage therapists to not take on new clients? I find it odd. But maybe it's a good thing as in business is good! Is there a screening process for someone looking for a good massage therapist?
@MassageSloth
@MassageSloth 4 жыл бұрын
I mostly look for someone who has been in business for a few years, and who does a reasonable job describing their massage philosophy on the website. I'll go see anyone who includes a video demonstration of their work, that can be a huge help (this tends to be more common on people's Instagram business pages). I do see new clients, look me up if you're ever in the Huntsville, AL region!

I;ve read that you need to hold myofascial stretches for at least 5 minutes to be effective, but you seem to go faster than this? Thanks
@MassageSloth
@MassageSloth 5 жыл бұрын
You will likely get some additional benefit from longer holds, but the body is always listening to stimuli and making changes accordingly. I say play with different durations, especially when working with clients who are willing and able to communicate their experience. Real talk: I love myofascial release, but a lot of the underlying theory and the rules surrounding it seem a little superstitious to me.

Actually, yes! That can be a fringe bene of practicing massage therapy. One side of that coin is the caution to be careful of 'massage sluts' as I've come to call this sort of 'friend'. I'm sure you can fill in the details. Basically, if you begin to suspect that if you weren't a massage therapist, with novice boundaries around the work, this person might not ever call again, you might possibly be correct. The other side of that coin, that I can pass on from lotsa experience over the years, is that when you and friends share massage, friendships deepen and become much, much more than the sum of the parts. Happy Rubbin in 2023💜
