My new book is out! It's called Massage Is Weird: massagesloth.com/book/
You're used to massaging clients with oil... so what do you do when someone stays fully clothed?
1:00 Strategy (using chair massage and myofascial release techniques)
1:40 Walking your way down the back
4:00 Moving to unilateral work, using soft fist
5:23 Applying transverse pressure
6:35 How to decrease pressure
7:18 Using forearm/elbow
7:40 Petrissage during clothed massage
8:30 Deep friction of the rotator cuff
10:08 Integrating the entire body
10:45 Lifting regions of the body
12:04 Using the bounce of the body to preserve your back
12:35 Static techniques
14:18 Massaging the foot through socks
16:25 Gliding to create superficial friction
17:30 Using oil when possible
When massaging a clothed client, you can borrow a lot from your experience with chair massage, but you can also keep your Swedish mentality. Walk your way down the body, compressing toward the hips, allowing each compression to tell a story about the body. Let your routine flow, even if each individual contact isn't able to.
Take this opportunity to use the extra traction provided by the clients' clothes. You'll be able to drag the fascia in ways that you might not be able to otherwise, and you can access areas like the glutes and pecs without needing to worry about the drape slipping. Make sure to get informed consent about sensitive areas, even when there's no possibility of exposure.
Mainly, try to embrace the traction rather than trying to somehow glide as if you were using oil. There's a lot of feel-good stuff that you can do with static techniques, and it can be a great opportunity to embrace slowness and stillness.
If you'd like to see some faster clothed massage with more movement, check out my clothed stretching/massage routine for the legs and hips: • Massage Tutorial: Clot...

Exactly! Many of my clinical hours take place in environments where we are massaging over clothing. At first, I had no idea how to proceed. I was killing my hands trying to glide over fabric. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Thank you @massagesloth - you ROCK!

I’m so lucky with my school. Before we are even allowed to learn draping and dress down, we have to do 4 weeks of clothed table massage for petrissage, vibration, compression, and tapotement.

I know a massage therapist who uses a large square silky cloth on clothed clients (i saw her using it at a chair massage event) to help smooth out the fabric texture and bumpy features like buttons, collars and pockets. It protects their clothing and her hands, and makes for a more integrated flow. Do you recommend any particular brand or fabric content?

Hey Nancy, thank you! And nothing in particular, just that it's a great chance to do work that takes advantage of the freedom of hand placement and the ability to approach the body from the side. Spreading the lateral low back with crossed hands, mashing the lateral hip muscles down toward the client's feet (which will also create a sensation of low back stretch), stepping down toward the client's feet and pressing their lateral rib fascia up toward their head as they take big breaths. And all sorts of opportunities for arm manipulation, including tractioning the arm superiorly as you press the hip inferiorly! A great lateral fascia stretch. And wait! I do actually have a little clothed sidelying content! I just remembered: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jpyXm6181q2ZmJ8.html 😁

For me, the hardest part about working on a clothed massage client (whether on a table or chair massage) can be the fabric I’m massaging over. Some literally can rub my hands raw.
@MassageSloth
@MassageSloth 5 жыл бұрын
This is true! That's one reason why I try to limit how much I glide over the cloth itself (except when I'm purposely creating heat through friction). During clothed table and chair massages I mostly move between techniques; I'll contact the cloth, sink in, apply pressure and change, then lift my hand and move where I'd like to go next.

This is so useful. Is there any myofascial release training you'd particularly suggest? I did some coursework at massage school but I'd like to deepen my knowledge, and I'm curious what you'd recommend. Thank-you so much.

Hi Ally! If you can get to the southeast US, I heartily recommend Pete Whitridge: www.whitridgewellness.com/schedule.html He's the one that started me down this path, and his style is what I'd aspire to if I weren't so lazy. You would also be well served by checking out Walt Fritz, who has both online and in-class stuff: waltfritzseminars.com/ Stricter MFR, but broadly applicable.

Hi Jennifer, I do have one, but I could probably stand to make a new one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJuaqbel1ZioqGQ.html In my next iteration I'll talk about how to use bent arms as well (I do use straight limbs quite a bit, but I'll also tuck my elbow into my side and do something like a t-rex posture for working on the mid and lower back). If I missed your event, I hope it went well!

Hey Ian I need an opinion from you. I suffer from a lot of muscle spasms on my neck and shoulders, the doctor recommends to do trigger point injections but I’ve never tried massage therapy or ever gotten a massage. Any thoughts on this?
@perfectday777
@perfectday777 6 жыл бұрын
Rachel Benites I'm not Ian and, hopefully, he'll respond to you; but I have a suggestion that you could consider trying. In addition to getting a good massage, and some stretches, look at your mineral intake, and increase it; especially, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Try Epsom salt baths or foot soaks (your feet will absorb the magnesium) and add lots of leafy greens like kale and spinach to your daily meals. Drop processed foods, too!
@MassageSloth
@MassageSloth 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel, I do think that massage could help. Muscles are more likely to spasm when they're tight and sensitive, and regular pain-free massage can gradually desensitize those areas. When you're looking for your first massage, I recommend trying someone who has been in business for a while, and who doesn't talk too much about trigger points. Trigger point work can be helpful, but it can potentially aggravate spasm if it isn't done with care. Look for someone who touts gentle work, and make sure to specify that you don't want your neck stretched too much, especially at first. If you can find someone who works within your body's touch/movement tolerance, it could make a solid difference over time. Best of luck!
@perfectday777
@perfectday777 6 жыл бұрын
I agree, Ian! I am a reflexologist and I recommend to many of my clients to find a good massage therapist, because it really enhances the body's ability to alleviate pain. Unfortunately, a lot of my clients have gotten skiddish about massage therapy because there are some LMTs who only do deep tissue massage. That is not a good thing for someone who is experiencing a lot of pain. Likewise, I use gentle touch (mild to moderate touch) according to what the client can tolerate. Better progress is made with that approach. Going at it like Rambo is counterproductive! I was introduced to reflexology last year when I was very sick and debilitated. EVERYTHING HURT!! She was being gentle but had to be EXTRA gentle with me when we first started. I made rapid progress. Later on, we incorporated massage during every other appointment and I found that the two combined was very helpful in regaining my health back. Again, it is so good to see you! I've missed you and worried about you!

I prefer to see their skin in order to know what is going on with their skin. I would use this on unclothed clients who don't want oil on their skin. Reason for that could be expensive clothing eg silk et cetera.
