I've bought the Massdrop 6XX when it was first released. I just kept it in the box most of the time as I didn't have much time alone in a quiet place that would work with these open backed headphones (I was mostly using IEMs back then). Fast forward to last year, I took it out the box and paired it with the E1DA Powerdac 2.1 and I fell in love immediately. I couldn't believe I kept the 6xx in the box all these years unloved! I think with some balanced 2.5mm cables it'll be even more amazing.

I've just received the HD560S today and I'm quite impressed. It'll be a little while before the review comes out, but my initial thoughts are that the HD6XX is significantly better built and the sound is a bit more refined and engaging. The HD560S wins in neutrality and also in soundstage / sense of space around the instruments. This is unfortunately all based on my memory of the HD650 and HD6XX because I don't own them anymore. Honestly not sure which of the two I'd buy - probably HD6XX because I like it's specific character

Love your reviews! Keep up the great work! I do have a question that could really use your perspective, if that's alright, and I would really like to see what your preferences are in this matter because I feel as though our audio tastes may align. I have been using the Amiron home for a while now, and while pretty good, I feel as though it's a bit piercing at times and a little fatiguing... Like my ears can't keep up with the speed of the drivers. I paired it up to an amp which smoothed it out a bit but I'm looking for a headphone that is really easy to listen to (maybe a dynamic) that has a little more oomph but just makes things a real joy to listen to. A lot of people recommend the hd600/6xx/650s, and I was leaning that way but I remembered that you really enjoyed the nighthawks/nightowls when you talked about them in your Amiron and Empyrean uploads, so I thought they could be a good match for me... Despite the polarising opinions from the wider community. So, long story short (sorry about that); would you recommend the nighthawks or nightowls when compared to the hd6xx or Meze Classics? Thanks again for the content you post, they're great to listen and learn to! 😊

Thanks CR, glad you like the reviews. I would definitely recommend the Hawks and/or Owls if you can still buy them. Another option might be the beyerdynamic T5 3rd generation. You lose a bit of upper mid emphasis compared to the NightOwls, but they're a magical overall experience that I'm still longing for since sending back the loaners. They're quite a shift from the Amiron though so the Hawks/Owls might be a better option if you're close to happy with the Amiron sound and just want a slight adjustment

700,000 hours. No exageration. You are right about driving them. When I used the HD6xx around the house, I was happy using my iphone to drive them. Of course you lose out on so many levels, but they were loud enought o be enjoyable, particularly when you are banging dishes around in the sink or walking around. As far as portables go, I really enjoyed the HD6xx balanced from the Fiio M11Pro. Great review as always, though be prepared for many many conflicting comments. They are a simultaniously loved and hated, which I simply find odd as if there was ever a signature that wouldn't offend people I would think it would be the HD6xx

Identical boat as you. The 6xx convey a spirit and truth to the vocals that is missed by the Sundara. The textures I get in vocals are so far above any other headphone or speaker I have ever heard, its magic. @PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a tough call, Pavel. I'm yet to try HD660S to see if it fits the bill. Otherwise you'd have to go to something like the HiFiMan Ananda I think, but that's also drifting away from the sound signature.
@snowmean1
@snowmean1 3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound I'm not entirely into HD6XX signature, but into the witchcraft they are using for mids and voices, those are astonishing. I'm actually wouldn't mind to have a bit more bass, and Ananda doesn't look like a decent alternative considering that it has less bass than even Sundara. HD660S are great headphones from what I read, but the price-point turns me away from them as I don't believe they are SO better than HD6XX to charge double the price.

Love this review Lachlan. Very informative and great laid back presentation. I’ve asked previously about a different headphone, and you kindly replied. But I think the 6XX may be a viable option for me, so I’ll ask the same question about it now. Would the 6XX be suitable for use listening to classical music, specifically full orchestral works please? By this I mean does the narrower soundstage and less treble response cause a lack of detail retrieval and instrument separation? Would it sound ‘cluttered’. I appreciate you’re busy but if you could spare a few minutes to answer I’d be really grateful. Cheers mate!

Hi Ian, glad you liked the video. I personally have always enjoyed the HD6XX across all genres, but it could be too "veiled" for some people when it comes to classical. Both wonderful headphones gonna stay with me but obviously ADX is better in any department (scale it with any gear its transparent). About HD800s... I was thinking about it very long but at the end I decided to buy ADX, best decision I made so far (HD800s can play wide but ADX can play 3D sound with moderate soundstage depend how track was intended to sound + zero complains about bass with tube amp). First time I have heard that realistic sound with ADX5000 using live concert was amazing, I had Arya with huge sound stage but ADX sounded different more life like (Arya was sold immediately)

Lots has gone around around this headphone family. Another review is welcome to continue the discussion. I have the original HD-580 Precision and the Drop x Senn 6XX. My first impression of the 580 was who threw the heavy wool blanket over everything. Many years later I have given it another try with the 6XX. What most people say about them I agree with - and there are a LOT of 580/600-series headphones out there. The sonic experience is so singular and also singularly enjoyable, that for all their short comings - and they are short comings (like Eugenio mentions below) - I'm willing to overlook these most of the time. I also have the Drop x Senn 58X Jubilee. On first listen I really liked them. Spending more time with them, I'm finding them limited. The 580/6XX (the ones I live with and know well) do scale. They sound different and often better paired with better gear. It's not the only combo they sound good with, but the 6XX with tubes is just that very singularly enjoyable thing. I have a Bottlehead Crack and an S3X (to be tidy, I'm trying to avoid the S.E.X moniker). The whole experience using these tubed amps with the 6XX is just a lovely thing. And if the Mainline is better still, wow. The 58X Jubilee, though, even with tubes, pretty much gives you the same sonics all the time. A mention about the plastic thing. I'm glad it wasn't belabored here. Plastic and cheap aren't synonyms. There's well-designed, high-quality construction, then there's the opposite of this. There are high-quality plastics, and there're those plastics that aren't. My 580 Precisions are more than 20 years old and looking and working as-new. So are my old "plastic" Lotus cars. Formula One cars are made of plastic...
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing, Steven. Did you not find the 58X to improve with the Crack's high output impedance? That's a great point about the plastics. I don't particularly like the feel of the 6XX plastic, but it is high quality as you say. I recall when I worked for Bang & Olufsen they showed us some of the plastics they used for products and explained that some plastics are worth as much as gold by weight - wow! (Not sure if that still holds true as it was a while back)

@@PassionforSound My experience with the 58X is that even with the Crack (and even after some tube rolling to further search for a sonic variance and best match) the 58X character was pretty much the same as with other amplifiers.

Interesting. I'm wondering if there was some product variation with the one I borrowed? It was like a different headphone on high output impedance mode!
@stevenjackson8226
@stevenjackson8226 3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound High output impedance mode... This is with your Mainline, I surmise? Because (and I know you know) the Crack and S3X don't have impedance selection. I didn't find the 58X to be so greatly transformed with the Crack. The Crack is a lovely device, but isn't such a resolving device, while the S3X is much more so, and I suspect the Mainline is even more so (I haven't had the opportunity to enjoy a Mainline or a Crackatwoa). I got the Crack to push the 6XX experience far into that specialized direction, and was interested to see how the 58X and the Crack would be together. With the constant current sources installed, the Bottlehead crew says Cracky can get along well with headphones of 100ohms, or greater, which puts the 150ohm 58X well within range.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Mainline has a fancy setup where there are two different output transformer wirings so you can switch from low to high output impedance. Great when moving between Senn HD series and normal dynamic cans. The S.E.X. is a marvellous amp, but not high output impedance so it won't influence the HD58X like the Crack or Mainline. I imagine the Crack's richness works against the 58X pairing because it needs clarity to shine (or at least improve a bit)

Great review! I do love my HD600, I enjoy their sound everyday and I find them a great allrounder in many ways. But the imaging and soundstaging when I listen to opera or orchestral music leave me really disappointed. The entire orchestra is represented in a small and undefined area behind my ears, everything is cramped and only the vocals sound great this close. Thanks Erick! I haven't heard the HE-400i so I can't say for certain, but based on the HE4XX in think they would be similar. The 6XX might be a bit fuller in the bass (mid-bass) and a little more mid emphasis due to lower treble.

These are a classic for a reason. Sennheiser got it right with the he 600, and 650. You know you have made a classic when you see the number of times a person has owned and sold it in their collection. Can't say that about many other headphones. Ditto on these getting better with sources and amps. I see you have a bottlehead MAINLINE amp. I bet it powers the 6xx terrific but an even more magical pairing is one of bottleheads crack with screwball otl amps. An otl amp with a high impedance 600, 650 or 6xx is a really synergistic combo. @PassionforSound

I haven't tried the Avatone so can't comment on that one - sorry! I think for your upgrade decision it's most important to think about what you want the headphone to do for you. Do you want it to be roughly the same sound signature as the 598 but more resolving and capable or do you wish for more bass, mids or treble? I think start there and then try to find some headphones that suit your wishlist rather than going for a brand, type of model that people say is good because they might have different tastes.

@@PassionforSound hey man, I've finally got the 6xxs and wanted to get back to you. Well... You were absolutely right. I'm listening to the 6xxs here with the jubilees by my side, as I have been for three days now, and it is indeed a superior headphone. At first the difference didn't get to me, as they can be quite tonally similar (they're both 600ish sennheisers after all), so I was a bit disappointed. After some absolute listening and some going back to the jubilees to compare "notes" or sound cues, I can proudly and happily say that I'm thrilled with the purchase; not only the 6xx pairs a more competent driver, it has more detail and resolution overall. This specifically was a surprise to me as I've always heard the 650 as being a warm headphone; it just goes to say how dark and "fuzzy" the 58X can be at times. In the end I think they're both top notch headphones for the prices, and I figure a lot of listeners, most importantly newer ones to the hobby, won't tell the differences right away (as they're both stellar, really), but to my HD 600 past tuned ears, the 6xx just itched the spot better. Thank you for the input, I wouldn't be as brave to pull the trigger without it! Prices here in South America are somewhat kind of like in Australia I imagine: these are not that easy to come by, a $50 difference definately not to take for granted.

@@imembridibuddha Hello friend. I've made the upgrade and no, I don't think the difference is worth it. I had a very hard time hearing it when I had both headphones to AB, and I found out that the biggest difference was the pad aging. I picked on the 58X "clarity" in my original comment, but truly, it was the very old and worn pads that it had. When I swapped them for the 6XX newly bought pads, everything opened up and the jubilees became remarkably close to their older siblings. I would only suggest to you getting the 6XX if you intend to use a OTL tube amp with them, as they have higher impedance and react better to high output impedance amps (like OTLs, such as the MK3 or the Bottlehead Crack). Otherwise, stay with your 58X: it already has the sennheiser sound signature. For yet more relaxing headphones, I'd look at something more veiled or with more bass bloom to compensate the pinna gain. Something like the Aeon Open X from DCA.

I have a love hate relationship with this Sennheiser HD650 which is an original name of Sennheiser HD6xx. I like the sound but sometimes the soundstage is weird to my ears. The leftforward and the rightforward are weakness of this headphone, sound like in your face so the soundstage is narrow. The sound sometimes feels like veil I can understand. The voice is forward just in your face make me feel tired sometimes. But with well recording with high vibration singers voice from this headphone deliveries is one of the best voices ever that I have ever heard. Low voice singers is just fine. This headphone scales up very well everytime I change gears in my system it does tell me the differences in sound. My next headphone could be Sony MDR Z1R. I am tired of Western, China headphones build quality. Time is back to high end Japan headphones. And the tuning of Western headphones are maybe not my taste I guess.

@@PassionforSound Hi Lachlan, Thanks for the reply & sorry for late reply as did deep dive on what my preference and how does 6xx serve my need. Afterall, you're asking me a legit question. I listened to various different genre of music like Easy Listening(Frank Pourcel), Orchestral Symphony, Electronic (Air,M83 & Vangelis Blade Runner), Eurobeat, Big Band Jazz, Rock (Muse, Oasis, Pink Floyd & Metallica) and City pop (Tatsuro Yamashita). I may miss out some genre here but you get the gist here. The tracks I listened to are ripped manually as wav file from CD's I previously with Hd280 then moved to Hd598 for next 11 years (still with same stock pad and still using it as my work laptop headphone) before acquiring HD6xx 6/7 months ago *A disclaimer is I have to admit I unable to go deep into the technical details (would love to understand it but not sure where to start with). So what I am about to describe is based from what I have now and does not have the experience in any other brand/models due to me not have proper source, baseline playlist I am familiar with to me and time for myself to try other headphone for longer listening session. Hence my opinion may be naïve* Coming from HD598 can say that HD6xx is a massive improvement: -Everything seemed to more clearer & detailed as compared to my previous headphone. -Just felt that in certain genre like rock, the bass can be a little too much for my liking while it was perfect for orchestral symphony type music. While it was balanced for me in the middle for other genres. -Felt that most music I had illusion of them playing in front of me in narrow room instead of some open space. -Lastly, as much as I liked it being more clear & detailed than HD598. I got feeling that it be muddy/mushy when there are plenty on going where all instruments are in play (especially fast music like rock or Eurobeat) and it hard to to focus on one instrument that are playing that time. -To add on, I also felt the music was slightly coloured too (as if headphone add its own taste to music). It was not neutral enough for me. I will revert to HD280 from time to time as it quite neutral for me. Again my impression may differs from yours but not sure based on what written above warrant me to go for HD600 or just go for planar based headphone or other makes product. Being said, I still do enjoy HD6xx and just being nitpicking. Watch yours and various review/video/writeup about this two comparison between hd600/hd6xx does not help lol. What your take on my above statement. Look forward to hear back from you.

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 11 ай бұрын
I always use 110dB as my reference for power. For safe listening levels, you should be aiming for about 75-85dB as your maximum continuous volume. By using 110dB as the benchmark, you're ensuring the amp has plenty of power for 75-85dB with lots of room to spare so you know you're not ever stressing the amp into a range where it will distort and sound harsh. The HD6XX needs 10mW to achieve 110dB (this is made up of 1.7V and 5.8mA) so voltage will be the limiting factor. That said, the Mojo 2 can output 5.7V into 300 ohms and 90mW max it has no problems at all driving the HD6XX to safe listening levels and beyond

Just checked the specs and, based only on the maths which isn't 100% accurate due to the way specs are produced and the way different music is recorded, the BTR5 should have just enough juice. The HD6XX needs about 12mW to reach 110dB (way too loud, but a good indicator of having enough headroom). The BTR5 puts out about 30mW into around 250 ohms so it will drop down close to 15mW at the peak of the HD6XX impedance (it varies with frequency) but should still provide enough power to have a little to spare. Hope that makes sense.

I think the best all rounder sennheiser, A vintage sennheiser better than 6xx/600, is the HD540 ref 1 600, gold 600ohm, ref 2 300ohm. They're mid forward, like the hd600 but neutral-bright, bigger staging (massive, right behind the hd800), more detail and some of the best imaging I've heard, right before HD800. This is not a unique opinion, this is a popular opinion among those who get their hands on these, they're the successor to the 600 series despite having been released before them, hands down. And guess what? There is only one review of them, a not very good review, why don't you get your hand on one of them and review it? They're from the 80s, the HD540 reference 2 300ohm (there is no 600ohm version for the reference 2) and HD540 reference 1 600ohm are the easiest to get of the bunch, the reference 1 300ohm is the worst of the bunch. The 600ohm golds is the absolute best of them all, all these versions need the proper pads, the original velour or hybrid fabric pads, nothing else, the velour being the absolute best. For your sake and ease, if you decide to review one (which you should because they're amazing), look on hifishark.com and try to get the HD540 reference 2 300ohm with velour pads, this way you won't have to go through the tedious process of proving if the golds or the ref 1 600ohm is actually 600ohm or what. Because the reference 2 is pretty damn top tier, sweeping the floors over the 650 (and i love the 650), replacing it as a all rounder headphone. If you want the challenge of getting the reference 1 600ohm or gold, there is a couple things to know, the 300ohm ref 1 says 300ohm on the side of the ear cups, the 600ohm does not, another way to confirm is by taking the pads off and looking on the inner ring, it says the ohms, alternatively (not as reliable) you can ask to see inside the original hand booklet and it should say the ohms. With the 600 ohm golds, the 300ohm doesn't have the ohm listed on the ear cups, only other way to truely know is by having them take the earpad off and looking at the inner ring, it should say 300 or 600 ohm, also a quick way to check if a gold is 600ohm or not is if the serial number on the headband and paper inside the box is anywhere from 0-18k (17-18k is risky territory because this is where they started changing some models to 300ohm), safe bet is 0-12k if you can't get an image of inside the ear cups or the original booklet. You want the original pads, the velour for the golds, the hybrid pads can do if there is no other option but don't settle for anything 3rd party, these change a lot based on pads.

With that said most stuff will have no problem regardless but saying something has roughly 10 times the power when in reality it is closer to 2-3x as much as needed.

Hi Michael, I get that most amps aren't rated at 300 ohms, but I think it's a bit extreme to call it misleading. I think the essence of my point is pretty clear when I provide specific figures to demonstrate that these headphones only need 120mW to reach 120dB. The 1W amp example was more to illustrate that crazy powerful amps really aren't necessary and I didn't state an impedance level for the 1W of power. For reference though, something like the very popular Schiit Jotunheim amp outputs 1.2W to 300 ohm so my example was grounded in reality and not at all misleading.

@@PassionforSound You're not wrong. As embarrassing as this is I apologize. For some reason I carried over this narrative of the previous video I watched without noticing. Idk why I thought I was still watching that video and I applied the context of the amps compared there to this for some weird reason. I don't know if I got up during the change or just wasn't paying attention but you are correct I put it in a context it wasn't actually put in. Again, I apologize.

That's completely ok, Michael. I appreciate you replying and also the intent of your original comment because misinformation about power requirements is abundant. Thanks again for watching and commenting 🙂
