I was working in Paris when this was staged and went to see it because I had never seen something at the Opera Bastille. The tickets were a little pricey, so I got a seat pretty far back. I was so captivated by it, that I bought a top end seat down front for a performance the following week. The 2010 staging of Wether at Opera Bastille made a huge splash in Paris. There were so many sub-texts. Jonas Kaufman had a cold and the editors had a tough time piecing together the full show (two days of filming) without a cough. This was the first time Kaufman had sung Werther, and what a rendition! Largely under-appreciated in the capital, Michel Plasson was making a relatively rare appearance in Paris. Ludovic Tézier had sung Werther (in its baritone version) only last season under the direction of Jean-François Verdier in a staging that was generally admitted to be a real stinker. The director here is Benoît Jacquot, a film director. He had done Tosca at Covent Garden before this Werther. I have seen a little of that (Giorghiu and Algna) and it is good too. I have no idea if he had anything to do with the selection of the singers, but this troupe creates a Werther where every last person is picture perfect in every respect. (No 200 lb heroines or jarring age incongruities to overlook.) It is a great thing to have captured this so brilliantly on film. It is hard to describe the excitement that people felt after the relative defeat of the previous year's Werther to have this stunning production unfold at the same theater as a sort of vindication of the French aesthetic compass. Emotionally, it felt like Sophie Koch was really at the heart of the show, both thanks to the plot line, but also in her interviews and commentary on the production. The crowds grew with every performance. People talked about it on TV and at work. Interestingly, the Met reprised the show with Kaufman and Koch, but the snippets I have seen of it are not as magical. The camera work in this one is brilliant, and the scenes like the return from the dance and scene in the courtyard of the Maison du Bailly are so perfectly intimate and yet monumental. All the costumes seem simpler than most stagings, and the grey-toned sets keep the focus on the extraordinary musical offering. Werther (originally a novel by Goethe) was a product of the early romantic era (1774) and had a purity that seemed inaccessible by the end of the 19th century (Wether the opera was written between 1885 and 1887), and the libretto reflects the clashes that came with the humanism of the time. It appears that the libretto was the product of a number of collaborators. Nevertheless the text can be extraordinarily moving and haunting. There was a broadcast by Arte with Emmanuelle Gomme providing an introduction. In it you see Kaufman stifling some impulsive coughs. This looks like the DVD set.

Thank you, Raheem, un immense MERCI de partager ce film! I only just discovered it, although it 's been there since 2017!!! It's pure beauty, in every respect! The close-ups and angles (prises de vue) are different from the DVD, which I love too, OF COURSE ! These artists are amazing, Jonas even with a bad cold on the opening night.... Lovely to see the curtain calls..! I am sure, you must be knowing the short videos filmed around this performance by Esti Gerber, backstage, very charming and personal.... best wishes !❤😊

It is somewhat impossible to imagine that this Charlotte could ever EVER walk away from that Werther!! Both are sublime but Kaufmann's complete and unerring intensity in both musical interpretation and acting is unbearably moving, beautiful and not often, it would seem, witnessed in opera, although I am no expert. It seems to me that they are both, here, at the pinnacle of their respective careers. Jaw-dropping. (Worth contrasting the way Richard Eyre directs the death scene in his slightly later production, both are exquisitely done but Eyre's is a little more daring I think). So wonderful to see the curtain calls, too.

Thanks jomurphy - I love your expression "unbearably moving" it is sooo true! These artists are just wonderful in this production , and not only this one... Jonas was and, for me, still is UNIQUE : nobody LIVES the characters of the roles like he does.. and, in addition, his diction is perfect - like here, in French !!! I do not think there will be another WERTHER, ever ! Am so touched, because I have only just discovered this film by Raheem - have the DVD though - filmed slightly differently - and just watched the whole film in one stretch...❤😂

Quelle soirée !!! magnifique Werther : sublimé par Michel Plasson !!!! dès l'ouverture, on sent qu'il va se passer un drame passionnant ; et les chanteurs !!! Kaufmann, un Werther, hors norme ! mais quelle passion ! une Charlotte magnifique, sensuelle, pleine de charme, un Albert extraordinaire de bonté et d'humanité ! et les seconds rôles magnifiquement distribués !!! superbe prestation !!! Merci à tous, chanteurs, chef, orchestre, mise en scène !!! je recommande cette prestation sans le moindre doute (et en plus pour une fois, on comprend les paroles ...!)

Merveilleux acteurs tous et toutes sont pénétrés du rôle voix magnifiques plateau homogène c’est très rare c’est une réussite parfaite bravissimo Je crois qu’on ne reverra pas de sitôt un Werther aussi exceptionnel Bravissimo je ne me lasse pas de l’écouter On dirait que Werther a été écrit pour Jonas Kaufmann quel interprète extraordinaire Merci pour ce moment de pur bonheur

Une fois de plus JONAS KAUFMANN EST REMARQUABLE Charlotte a également une très belle voix de mezzo c est un bonheur absolu de les entendre une pure merveille J ADORE

Je pense que vous n’avez pas écouté GEORGES THILL , CULTIVEZ VOUS avant d’énoncer de telles âneries , plus près de nous il y a eu A KRAUS ...VANZO...et A. LANCE des noms inconnus pour vous mais merveilleux chanteurs , et je ne parle pas des anciens ..même s’il donne une bonne prestation où est le timbre , la beauté de l’émission ..le phrasé .. y compris dans les récitatifs..la ligne de chant ...rien que la beauté vocale et les harmoniques font la différence ...même ALAGNA est loin , comme dans le CID.. comparer KAUFMANN à GEORGES THILL......dans WERTHER ..VOIRE LOHENGRIN je n’y aurait pas pensé même sous amphétamines ...Djouille Eluzalyrics

L'âne c'est vous et même l'inculte , car trouver KAUFMANN Inégalable dans WERTHER est difficile à croire ,, céder à la mode des ténors poussifs quand on a rien à se mettre sous la dent ne justifie pas d'accepter des comparaisons vocales aussi grotesques , ce n'est pas être agressif d'aimer les belles voix ..car on parle ici de CHANT ..DE TIMBRE ..D'ÉMISSION VOCALE et désolé mais ce chanteur adulé n'aurait pas eu sa place aux TROUBADOURS MONTAGNARDS DE TARBES dans les années 47-50 ,..Quant à comparer L'INTÉGRALE DE THILL ET CELLE DE KAUFMANN et préférer KAUFMANN..me laisse des doutes sur votre connaissance des voix et des qualités vocales acquises peit-être dans les cocktails mondains des foyers de thêatres à la mode ..vous insultez en plus des dizaines de grandes voix européennes aux timbres superbes et aux émissions éclatantes dont les interprétations n'étaient pas ridicules ..pour avoir entendu A. LANCE vers 1966 dans WERTHER à BORDEAUX ..ou le jeune LICCIONI ou plus tard VANZO ..la beauté vocale n'exclue pas UNE INTERPRETATION DE QUALITE ..voire ALAGNA ..que des voix françaises ou assimilées ...Le temps que KAUFMANN met pour émettre un SI NATUREL ( lorsque l'enfant revient d'un voyage avant l'heure...) ...THILL en donne trois avec son émission directe ...préférer GIGLI à LAURI-VOLPI VOLPI ..FLETA OU MARTINELLII ..in peut car c'est un haut niveau vocal ..PREFERER K A A. KRAUS c'est déjà bizarre vocalement et dans l'interprétation ....J BOURGEOIS disait que chez THILL les émotions et les sentiments passaient par le timbre ..et ce n'est pas le cas chez KFC. .dont on on cherche vainement le timbre et la spontanéité ..Quant à la splendeur vocale dans les arias et LES RECITATIFS ..si vous ne préférez pas THILL c'est votre droit mais jusqu'à la fin de mes jours je chercherai pour qu'elle raison cela est possible..question de philo..une oeuvre d'art doit -elle être belle ? Vous répondez en partie à la question Djouille ELUZALYRICS

Ce ne sont pas des aigreurs mais à 71 ans et 59 ans d’écoute de voix je ne suis pas un mouton qui suit les modes et je défends simplement ce que je pense être la qalité dans un sîte dont les pseudo-icônes sont BOCELLI ...MARIO LANZA OU MDMONACO prototype d brailleur vocal fâché avec la justesse ..chant bAS ( VOUS EN CONNAISSEZ A LA SIGNIFICATION ? )).quant aux 2 premiers leur présence et leur audience sur YT est la preuve du mélange néfaste entre publicité et qualité ..un jour YKF ( écoutez la bizarre interprétation ENREGISTREE de l’air de RODOLPHE du 1er acte de la BOHEME ) qui chante tout y compris les grands VERDI , chantera le "soulier magique "de chantal GOYA et il y sera " MEVEILLEUX" pour les précieux qui prennent les vessies pour des lanternes . Djouille Eluzalyrics qui a eu la chance d’entendre dans sa vie des vrais ténors , ce qui n’est pas le cas de tous .

Corelli ne chanta jamais OTELLO mais quelle splendeur vocale et quelle présence physique ..ROLAND MNCINI disait lorsqu’il l’avait vu à VERONE à ses débuts .il avait était impressionné par son physique ..quant à sa voix "directe" il n’a pas d’égal dans CALAF..MANRICO ...M DE SAXE ..CHENIER ..question de splendeur vocale ..même s’il se laissait aller parfois à des excès inutiles (le SI naturel de DON JOSE da "la fleur " de longueur outrancière ) mais on pardonne car toute sa carrkère a été avec son épouse une recherche de sobiété ...pour M LANZA ET BOCELLI ..REGARDEZ DANS YOU TUBE ET VOUS VERREZ ..UN PSEUDO CHANTEUR COMME LANZA A DES FANS et écoutez ses enregistrements "jeunes à 18 ans .."et demandez-vus comment une voix aussi médiocre et ruinée peut 5 ans après chanter PINKERTON sur scène .avant , grace à la magie du trucage hollywoodien , de devenir la vedette que l’on sait ...heureusement sa mort prématurée lui a épzrgné ( c’est tragique pour lui ) une déconvenue probable dans un RIGOLETTO ..je cois ...sans micro ou artifice .. Peu de chanteurs peuvent tout chanter ..sauf pénurie , heureusement JKF est à un âge ou sa vix de ténor ?) Ne risque pzs grand chose ..OTELLO est un rôle casse -voix ...on oublie hélas le dernier français titulaire du rôle ..GUY CHAUVET qui succéda à j LUCCIONI ...mais les français sont toujours ignorés , entre les 2 guerres dans une traduction frnçise correcte il y avait des voix et des INTERPRETES ( OTELLO EST QUAND MÈME BOURRIN ? ) MAIS ON SE SOUVIENT SURTOUT DES ITALIENS.. JE MAINTIENS MON AVIS SUR JKF mais vous aimez et c’est le principal dès lors qu’on s’éloigne de l’effet mode qui m’insupporte dans ce domaine .un Pavarotti est maintenant dénigré , un KRAUS oublié même de son vivant au profit d’un CARRERAS vite épuisé ou d’un DOMINGO INDISCUTABLE MAIS AUX AIGUS TELLEMENT LABORIEUX ..QU’IL A FINI BARYTON "MARTIN ??" ..ce que je crois être JFK qui n’a pzs l’éclat et la spontanéité ..le double deémarrage du vrai ténor ...on peut s’interroger sur la technique et le suivi des carrières ..VILLAZON ..CURA ..ALVAREZ ETC...bien que chantant tellement moins qu’autrefois Ruinent leurs voix en moins de 10 ans ..pour VILLAZON LE METTEUR EN SCENE EST PIRE QUE LE CHANTEUR . JESPEREVQU’OTELLO NE SE CHANTE PAS AU CINEA-BASTILLE CETTE HORREUR ACOUSTIQUE ET VISUELLE ET N’OUBLIONS PAS QUE LA BEAUTE DE CET OPÉRA ..C’EST LE MERVEILLEUX ÔLE DE DESDEMONE , J’AI ENTENDU M. CABALLÉ EN LIVE ..EMOTION GARANTIE UN PASSIONNÉ ICONOCLASRE DJOUILLE..ELUZALYRICS ELUZA EST L’ANTIQUE EAUZE

i cant believe this opera production everything is perfect , i mean from the sound you can hear they had a very good sound engineer, the best visual producers, and dont get me started on the director this is a very good product in tech and art wow!!!!!! its like producer knew that he is getting the best so no problem with cameras exposing anything , i mean even if a rat passed on stage it will still look good. BRAVI TUTTI!!!

The set should establish a standard; it is at once minimalist in keeping with the visual inclination of contemporary audiences, and romantic, in keeping with the core nature of the music and subject.

Fantastic performance. Just to watch Sophie Koch's facial expressions in Reve Exstase (from 45.20) is to see a masterclass in re-acting. Somehow I guess it wasn't too difficult for her with such glorious singing from Jonas K

The situation is ideal: a handsome and talented man telling you he loves you in such a way is irresistible. Unless singing that every day and doing nothing else. I mean nothing but dreaming about love... That is indeed tiring after a month, as infatuation starts to fade away. Anyway, Sophie is very good at acting. Any woman dreams about such a situation at least once in a lifetime.

What a great production!!! Wonderful singing and a set that did not detract but added to the music and drama. Thanks for posting. I did miss titles, however. It reminded me of the say when they were unavailable and I had difficulty with the drama, even with operas that I had studied. Thanks so much!

No it was in Paris in 2011. I was in the audience, next to on of the camera and so lucky. Jonas voice was unbelievely powerfuI Iive !

This Werther was premiered in January 14, 2010 . Jonas has no equal in this role, from all points of view: singing, acting, charm and emotion...

On peut difficilement trouver mieux pour interpréter Werther que ces deux chanteurs d'exception. Sophie Koch est toujours en excellent état vocal, ce qui n'est plus le cas du malheureux Kaufmann qu'un problème aux cordes vocales a rendu quelque peu diminué. Je l'ai entendu il y a quelques mois à Bastille dans Don Carlos : ce n'est plus ça du tout. Mais le film que vous avez mis en ligne permet de conserver le souvenir de cette représentation inoubliable de Werther.
