Two elements are visible in the video that were invented by Cyrus McCormick and part of his reaper in 1831. That's the rotating mechanism that stands the stalks up, and the clipping mechanism that cuts them off. Those elements have been a part of every mechanical reaper and combine since McCormick invented them 190 years ago. McCormick's father spent many years trying to develop a reaper, and failed. He passed that task on to his son, who succeeded. Cyrus Mccormick was a blacksmith and made all the wooden and iron parts of his reaper by hand ---his own hands. He did have the help of a slave in developing his reaper, so those hands deserve credit as well.

Massey-Harris binders were great, but Cockshutt was the undisputed leader in the PTO sphere.

On closer inspection with photo’s it would appear you are correct. Good eye, my mistake. I will change the title and dig up more info on this machine when i get to see it again in the spring.

I had the opportunity to shock and thresh oats for two years on the farm. We were still husking corn until I was about six. I helped a neighbor put up loose hay to see if he remembered how. These activities will give you a lot of respect for those iron men living before us. It will also allow you to sleep without being rocked , as Dad told my wife after mowing a thousand plus bales on a hot day. It is the type of thing many kids need to build respect and self confidence.

I forgot to add this. Grampa showed my brother and I how to tie bundles that were cut with a cradle, using some of the straw. Cultivating corn is a monotonous job at best. Then I got to make a couple passes with a horse drawn cultivator.
