This was the first time filming in the United States. I don't normally explore and film abandoned industrial buildings. So I was pretty excited to see this massive abandoned place. This place was in the middle of nowhere. This was such a fun explore for me. This building was built in 1956 and operated as Elk Roofing. It was a very successful company until the owner passed away in 1972. The family sold the business. In 1985 the current owners shut down the business and left it abandoned until 1991 when Striker Paper Company bought the building. They renovated the building and operated it until approx. 1999. The building has been abandoned since.

Hey Brent, somebody probably already said this but those rollers aren't powered by water. That big blue motor 11:46 is what drives the rollers. Those lines are for steam to heat all the rollers. This dries the paper as it makes its way down the line.

Those hard hats are actually just called bump caps just to prevent minor knocks to the head. We used to wear them at a food manufacturing plant I worked

Those train cars are auto racks, not cattle cars. Also, the paper manufacturer sends out those huge rolls as is to their customers and the customers then cut them down for their various uses. Very interesting place this time!

the rail car' that you saw are called "auto racks". used to haul cars/trucks. considering how they are on an active line (on a siding) they are in short term storage waiting for the call up, to return to duty!

Used to work for a company that supplied felts to paper mills used in all phases of production-wet felt, dryer felt, and forming fabrics. Awesome to see the sections where they were used.

When you came across the black and decker I had to look it up. It came out March of 2016. The one there came out in 2022. Someone else brought it there. But it a cool place. A lot larger then the paper plant I worked at.

Awesome snap shot of factory life in the 80's. Clocking in n' out on the time clock LOL Safety Green, Caution Yellow, Industrial Gray, Machine Blue, Safety Crush Orange and Danger Red OSHA factory paint colors. Brent... that rail car is what is known as an Autorack, a three deck automobile transporting rail car.

Those rolls were heated by high pressure steam. They rolled the paper and dried it as it passed through the rolls.

Right at 11:00 that is a paper dryer where the paper rolls thru the rollers and dried it like one big dryer. At the end would be where they rolled it on a big roller and there would sharp disc a couple of them that would roll with the paper to make a perfect roll to be loaded on railcar.

As always Brent, excellent explore, good mood music and fantastic camera work. Those pipes going to the rollers are a hydraulic system for vibration dampening and roller lubrication.. Can't wait for the next explore!

paper maker here. most of those pipes are steam pipes, to heat the giant rollers you see. Paper would ride up and over those rollers getting heated and pressed between them to get the end result of paper. Paper starts as about 97% water/chemicals and 3% wood pulp, but as it passes over those rollers and gets heated and compressed, it dries and gets compacted together to form paper. The paper machines in this video are old, but we still use the same concept in modern day paper machines. They are much larger though, 3 stories tall and 1/4 mile long, and able to run at a speed of 4,000+ Feet per minute.

most modern day paper machines make rolls of paper that are 20-35 feet wide, 5-10 feet in diameter and weigh anywhere from 30,000 - 80,000 lbs. just for reference on how much things have changed since the equipment in this video was last operational.

The helmets are Bump Caps. Not for heavy objects, just so if you bump your head, you don't split it open. Those rail cars are Auto Racks.

A lot of old paper mills had toxic waste, I wonder if that is the reason it has stayed abandoned for years. A metal scrapper could cash out and re-sell the property all cleaned up... except for the toxic waste. Removing toxic waste is really expensive. I am just guessing about the place, I really can't know, but I enjoyed the tour!

The red tape goes into a machine that you punch letters into that tape. You peel the back and apply it where you need it. It was used to label stuff.

Not totally sure but I think those pipes that were tied into those cylinders at the end were used for pumping in steam to dry the paper, and the large wheels with sprockets on them actually were used to drive the large steam rollers, or drums. The large motors actually are the means to drive the whole drying process. It was kinda funny how the time clocks were literally punched out even without power, lol..

That place probably produced newspaper stock. Which is also probably why it's closed down and out of business. Also, those are steam lines not hydraulic lines. Believe it or not, the dry end of the production line uses steam to heat the drying rollers, which is drying the paper as it passes between all those heated rollers and the water and condensed steam drains off into the trough underneath... which is what you're looking at.

Live steam kraft paper extrusion. They made kraft paper for paper grocery bags and the components for cardboard boxes. Many different chemicals were also used to turn wood pulp into paper.

awesome explore Brent,, i can't imagine how loud that machinery must've been when it was fully functional back in the day, we have a similar looking old factory near where i live that one time mad Ball Bearings through the 1930's through WW 2 then into the 50's,,,i'm guessing back in the day probably a freight train would stop where the tracks are and pick up the paper products,, ,neat place, you should explore more down here in the states

Down south when they get stuck waiting for a train to pass. The people shut off their vehicles an get out. Sitting on the hoods of cars, walk around have a cigarette, beer either sandwich. The train passes, they all jump back in their cars an take off. Gust a regular day down southern US.

What my take of computers and paper is since 2010 paper production has dived and news papers have all but disappeared which saves thousands of trees. That place is a scrapers wet dream..

Those aren’t cattle cars, they are for vehicles built and transported to other states before they put them on semi trucks for local delivery. Cattle only get transported by semi trucks along with chickens and pigs, they can’t be left out in the elects for very long due to stress. Especially chickens, they don’t like to stress them longer than necessary or they will die

Brent interesting place. Good music..i would have liked to have a former employee talk us through it or see photo's of it working back in the day. I totally had no idea what I was viewing. You really need respiratory equipment in these old places..you are breathing in bad stuff. Rats and mice carry disease. You need gloves always. The virus's you can get can kill you. Be careful in those places. Stay safe.
