I vote that Merlin and the Tow Mater ( Merlins Old School Garage) get an invite to the Wrecker Olympics. As a machinist and 10 year machinist instructor, I was experiencing some anxiety when Paul left that chuck key in the lathe chuck and kinda walked away from it. Please don't do that kids.

That’s a good thing you did for Ed. So many people look the other way when it comes time to support our elders. And when they make their Forever Journey, that lifetime, knowledge, and wisdom are gone forever. So honor and cherish them while you still have them, as you’ve shown to do. My respects.

I agree that "Merlins Old School Garage" needs to be in the "Tow Truck Olympics"! The wrecker is coming along nicely. I got a peak it last June when all of you were at Easter Jeep Safari. Got to say hi to Colin as he was headed out! Got my "Ed Says & Morr ball cap! Had my oldest son laughing, he said I was as giddy as a school girl! You guys are truly amazing!

@ 7:57 OH MY! Paul took his hand off the chuck key, while it was still in the chuck. The first thing I was taught about a lathe, Never leave the key in the chuck 😊 I hope cousin Merlin is one that gets a Golden Ticket! Gotta have some Old School Garage there.

As a structural welder of 20 years, I would like to give you a little tip. When you get to the end of your welds, normally there will be hairline cracks in the crater. You'll see these cracks more visibly with aluminum, but they're there with steel as well (can be seen with magnetic particle inspection). With something that's truly static it doesn't matter as much, but with some parts on the wrecker that are moving, over time those small cracks can run along the length of the weld and cause it to fail. I've seen this first hand several times. Maybe you do this off camera, but from what if seen in your vids you don't. At the end of the weld, pause for a second, then give a little shot extra in the crater. This will cap the tiny cracks, and keep it from potentially working their way down the weld. Aside from that, I like the work you guys are doing!

if you get shrink / crater crak at the end of every weld you are doing something wrong, but your solution to preventing it is spot on , fill the end a sec longer to prevent to crater to form.

I agree. I have been a welding inspector since 1984. When you are welding the weld crater is digging into the base materials. If you just stop without filling the crater you will have an undercut situation and a crack will form. One other thing to do, if possible, continue to weld around the corner into the opposite side weld. Ends of weld are a great place for fatigue cracks to start.

I stopped by and got to see the wrecker: beautiful fab work!! Ed came over and shook my hand: huge honor to meet him! Looking in his eyes, there’s a lot of stories and experiences in there, and they’re clear and bright. I was deeply honored that he seemed to be happy to meet me and that I knew his name before he spoke. I greeted him “Hello Mr Ed, how are you Sir?” I would LOVE a documentary on this man’s life!! This is a man who built the “block” that others claim to have “been around “. I have large hands and his were like shaking hands with a baseball mitt: they’ve known a lot of work!! And the doggies are happy, healthy and clean and comfortable and well cared for by The Man, Ed. 💪🙏♥️. Thank you for such a wonderful experience and for being such a great inspiration and role model for us to aspire to.

So happy I found your wonderful bunch people. Strange sounding sentence but it says what I feel. You show us the work on the Heavy Wrecker and go right into part of the team there as you show Ed his new apartment. That is the beauty of this channel you have built, caring for others all the time. You guys are great. You , and Fab Rats are on my Playlist as much as Heavy D. Great people doing great things with your toys and for the folks you love. The stuff you do for Ed and keeping him going is great. Keep up the solid love for just people. I enjoy it alot. I'm from Tennessee and most of my family live in the Salt Lake area, so I have a fond connection to the western side of where I've spent time in my life and I like seeing good people doing great things where I've been before. I'm a structural engineer- maybe we should have a little discussion about that free body diagram. Or maybe there was something you didn't show in the video. If you have limit straps on both ends of a solid axle, you wouldn't need a strap in the middle. The middle would never drop any lower than the ends because worst case you would have both ends at full extension (when you have a lot of weight on the boom and unload the front axle). Putting a strap on the center and longer straps on the ends would achieve more articulation. It went by pretty quick but I spotted that table lamp made out of a Chevrolet big block valve cover!

I am just overwhelmed with your generosity Matt. Giving Ed a very comfortable and safe place to live is the most heart touching deed you have ever done! He seems to be such a nice guy and deserves to be close to the gang in his golden years. God will surly bless every hand that was involved with this for him. I wish my son worked with you. He is a welder and metal fabricator. He has lifted his 4x4 trucks. He would be a excellent contribution to the team.

I am elderly, too. Make sure Ed's hotplate has a timer! I burned so many meals I even got one that doesn't heat up. It uses conduction to cook the food. Very safe.

I love that Ed has a nice new apartment. Thank you Matt and crew and everybody that has been involved in making sure that Ed is taken care of. Even thinking about a higher Toilet and the safety grab rails where they are needed the most. I am really happy for Ed! 👏👍💯

Ed is a treasure, he deserves a nice apartment. I had no clue he was staying in the travel trailer in the shop yard, this is a *huge* upgrade. He doesn't quite 'need' some of the accessibility stuff yet, but it will still help sometimes now, and having it is better than adding it later.

For those that are wondering about the stops that Matt wants to put on the rear steering cylinder, they are a common item on cylinders. On a forklift, they are used to limit how far the mast can tilt back.

We use some on the lift cylinders on our haybine to limit how low it goes so we cut hay a little higher on rough or rocky fields. They just clip on and off the ram.

My only concern is in an off road environment , mud, sand, ect. they will pack debris against the seal causing premature failure of the seal. the seal or wipe is designed to wipe the staff ,as the stopper comes in to bottom out it is going to trap and press debris under the wipe.

I would like to think there's going to be some sort of rack boot over them. My concern was the sleeve scoring the shaft. A plastic liner down the inside should suffice.

@Mike we've put them on our tillage equipment which gets dragged through some of the worst sandy dirt and mud you'll find. Never had a problem.

Merlin and TowMater please. Matt, you suggested we come up with a punishment for Tom when he didn’t grab those Jeep keys, then you leave the lathe turned pipes at Paul’s. 😅 oh boy. I think that valve cover lamp was the coolest part of Ed’s new apartment. I mean, other than the fact y’all built him an apartment in the first place. As for the wrecker, Rory has more off road tow truck experience, Paul has the eyecrometer to pick the right line, and Matt has a buggy with a boom… This is going to be an entertaining event no matter who wins.

Hey Matt, you need to checkout the tap holders that look like a drill chuck but you attach them to any 3/8" ratchet!! Snap On and Mac have the exact same set. There are 2 in a set for larger and smaller taps.
