This was one of your best showcases. Viewers can sense your enthusiasm. I would be interested in a part 2 that would show viewers how to set up the best configuration using current prices/ratings , i.e. bang for the buck. Since many users won't need 128TB of storage, doing one with a lesser amount would be interesting...just an idea! The cost would be of interest as well! Great job!!

Very nice device, and I like the simplicity too. I'm using external drives for Time Machine and storage and they meet my needs so far, but I would like another backup for redundancy.

Yes the simplicity cannot be overlooked as it is a good device for non-techies also and is hard to screw up. Thanks for watching.

Hey Craig, great video mate looks really interesting solution. New subscriber here. Quick question if I may, I had my system built for me about 3 years ago - basically a Mac-hybrid. The connections I've got are USB3.1 and Thunderbolt 3. If i was to use my T3 connected to the D8 would I still be able to reach the top speeds quoted? Thanks again for a class video, look forward checking out your others!

I am not sure but maybe reach out to the company and see what they say. It's a tough call especially since it's a Hackentosh and I would hate to say yes and have you buy it if it won't work. I would guess yes but just not sure.

Cool. Compared to the price of other boxes, this is great. Even at $299. At some point I'll need something like this. For now, I have a few externals that get me by. I do Time Machine with a software RAID of 2 8TB drives. I'll replace that in a few weeks with a single large drive and move 1 of the 8TB drives to replace my 2 smaller 4TB drives (one has already been retired due to some issues). The other 8TB I'll keep in reserve for when the time comes to use it. Possibly create a JBOD or RAID 0 with the other one. But that's years down the road as I really don't retain my original video and audio for more than about a year. I've never needed to access them after completing a final edit for my show.

Yeah, I really like this due to the ability to grow the storage and also the ease of use without complexity. Thanks for posting and good luck with everything.

Looks like a good solution for someone with large storage needs But I have a DROBO that is excellent for my needs. DROBO stripes and mirrors so I get better speed and safety. But having a Thunderbolt option for this product would be a good option for those that need better speed

Here's another benefit that comes to mind... Obviously this doesn't satisfy offsite backup, but Backblaze would (unlike a NAS sharing a network folder) see this as a regular external hard drive and should back it up, unlimited, to the cloud for you with their backup service. Up to 128 TB for $99/year. That's a big deal. People using a NAS have to either duplicate the setup offsite and set up some wonky remote site to site backup or pay big time for something like B2 or an off-site FTP service like NetDynamics. This lets you hack Backblaze a bit, so to speak.

Maybe a bit and thanks for watching. It's just another option out there that is fairly cost effective. It's super easy to setup for most people also.

the problem with this design is - when one is transferring data from one drive bay to another drive bay in the same enclosure - the data rate is decrease ... you are not getting the max output vs max input because it is using the one use connector thus creating a back log ... yes it will work in this setup but not in the maximum level because you are depended on using one connection for data transfers ....
@craigneidel
@craigneidel Ай бұрын
Yes, it has some limitations but for what it is and the flexibility of the bays I think it's still a good buy. Also, it's very simple to use and more a ton of people that means they won't accidentally mess up their data which is by itself a "feature". Anyhow all these have something but this is fast enough for me and I can edit off it etc. just fine.

Yes, that is why is generally do a product showcase and said in the video I have only had it 2 weeks so I'm not doing a full review. Yes, this is the same with all products down the road. It's best to wait etc. for issues to be hashed out. I think that is why the offer the $100 discount for early adopters but so far this has been working great without issues and they have made a D5 before that is basically the same with less bays.

the ports are USB-C, 10gbe only, far too slow., why didnt they make it a thunderbolt port, UBB4, makes no sense having a device like that being so slow.
@craigneidel
@craigneidel 2 ай бұрын
Hilarious - 10 Gbps ethernet isn't too slow. I mean come on now. A thunderbolt enclosure like this would be 4 times the cost also. Plus I would argue that 1000 MB/s is fast enough for 95% of people and even 95% of people that think they need Thunderbolt 4. At the end of the day you need to look at the value. Yes, some people need thunderbolt but not many at all and this thing is great for what it is and the cost.
@craigneidel
@craigneidel 2 ай бұрын
I meant to say that 10 Gbps Either networking usually is what people use so why is this too slow?
@WineWorldTV
@WineWorldTV 2 ай бұрын
For what? Any non-Thunderbolt/USB4 external solution is going to have the same result. I mean if you're looking for Thunderbolt speeds because you're doing some massive 8k multicam film project with tons of effects, sure. And you're going to spend 3-5x the price. With that said, there are a lot of people editing in their NLE of choice off of a Samsung T7 SSD. But for 99% of the people out there, this is plenty fast for what it's intended for. Massive storage. I mean, 4 of the drives are restricted to SATA speeds anyway and no enclosure won't make them any faster than 1000-1100 MBps if set as RAID 0, otherwise you're going to get about 560 MBps. The NVMe drives have the potential to max out at 1250 MBps (10 Gbps) depending of the drive. Now if you're trying to access all 8 drives at the same time maybe there's a performance hit depending on how everything is configured.
@craigneidel
@craigneidel 2 ай бұрын
I agree and I think that I read about 50% of KZfaqrs use the T7 SSD. But that is just that specific brand and it could be way more that use 10 Gbps enclosures. My guess is 85% of KZfaqrs use 10 Gbps or slower. Now companies that have the money might use more Thunderbolt but for most I think it's overkill. I have reviewed many 40 Gbps enclosures on my channel but then you are dealing with more heat and other issues but they are fast.

@@craigneidel Value is subjective, it is for a Mac one of the key ports on Apple machine is the thunderbolt port and if you were to put decent size hard drives into it with that connection it owuld take forever to copy data across. All I'm saying it your making it for a Mac make use of the Mac interface. htis falls short by a long way.
