I LOVE how this is literally a budget build, getting all of the goods from Walmart, Amazon and Lowe’s is awesome! I’ve seen “budget builds” and they’re spending 5k on interior supplies which is NOT realistic and not doable for most people. This video gave my hope, my husband and I are wanting to do a conversion in the next year or two and I’ll definitely be looking at your videos for tips and ideas. You’ve earned a new subscriber! Thanks for the detailed video, you did a great job!

Keep in mind you are watching a 30 minute video of a build. These days just a trailer is easily $6,000 unless you already have one laying around. The reality of these home built campers is they take a lot of time, which is why average people can sink $5k into one. Work and life get in the way. I’ve been working on my project trailer for nine months at this point, and I’m not done. I’m not exactly sure what I’ve paid for everything, but that’s because I’ve been cash flowing it for nine months. You don’t just run out, buy $5,000 in parts, and build it in a weekend (it’s a bad idea, because you make an install, it fails, and Amazon won’t take it back because you’ve had it too long (Chinese Diesel Heater)). The other advice I have is: make a plan for a phase, save $$ for the phase, build the phase, and take it camping. If a phase has unintended consequences or simply doesn’t work, you need to know before the next phase makes starting over impossible. This also makes sure you are never without a usable trailer for more than a weekend. I camped after insulation and walls. I camped after electrical and appliances, and a kitchen. I camped after bunks. I’m gonna have to start over on the kitchen, cause I hate it. These things happen.

@@TheBudgetSportsman You're very handy and clever! I'd seen another KZfaq video where I guy converted a horse trailer for the same use. I'm going to look into RV Rentals, I hear they have a VRBO type program. My public hunting area in NJ doesn't have any affordable hotels, and the only budget motel was frankly scary! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I like your what you've done, good work. One problem you may not no of, those as seen on TV door screens, do keep out bugs. Larger critters like snakes it want stop. I know this by relatives who used these on their kitchen door. They found a rather dangerous snake curled up on their refrigerator. It came in and left by pushing it's nose through it. The magnets wouldn't stop it. It be terrible to wake up with a rattle snake laying beside you.🙂 Keep up the good work, but I'd find a real screen door for safety! Hope 2022 goes well for you.

it looks better. I would still want to use hammocks. That would free up a lot of space and are easier to pack away each day, leaving a lot of room. In a trailer, several hammocks could be set up and provide very comfortable sleep for all. I would want to insulate at least the ceiling since it gets so hot here in Florida (Orange Park) and would want to add the solar to the roof so that power could be more readily available. Thanks for sharing. Grace is so cute. God bless you, brother.

Get a longer tarp and hook the magnets on the left side of the trailer. Then the rain can't come under the tarp and get stuff wet. Now it would just go under it in my opinion. Great video. I like barn doors
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct, the water can come under the tarp, but this can be partially solved by putting the trailer slightly out of level toward the back side. Unfortunately a bigger tarp wouldn’t fit in my storage container.

We used old window locks - that fit through tarp holes and clamp onto the gutter rail that came with our trailer. Not as fast as magnets for set up but works similarly. We live in NW coastal rainforest and use a 10x14 tarp whichever direction and it has been superb. 6x10 CTC Kidogo sleeps 4. I just got magnets for back of car tarp so I’m curious to test out your method. What tarp poles do you use?

one suggestion is peg board on the front wall. great for hanging little things and you arrange and change as needed. also magnet tool bars from Harbor Freight .very strong and we use it for knifes and cooking tools very handy when cooking. last thing I added to my trailer was a clothes rod to hang clothes when getting ready for bed or to hang coats . better and a pile on the floor. I don't use it for full time hanging of clothes but it comes in handy for coats or towels.

Nice Job.... I am in the process of converting an 8x16 v-nose cargo trailer into an RV and Mobile Sign Shop. I am just starting the walls and cabinets construction. I just sold a 15-passenger shuttle bus that I lived in for 3 years and traveled out west during the winters. I had to sell the shuttle bus because I purchased a large format color printer to make contour cut decals/stickers, koozies, t-shirts, magnetics, banners, mousepads, etc. The large format color printer would have taken up a lot of storage space so I needed to get something bigger. I did a complete conversion series on the shuttle bus from the ground up and now am doing a new series on the cargo trailer conversion. They are on my YT channel.

Im in the process of converting my 7X14X7 and also trying to keep it versatile and capable of multiple tasks. (toy hauler, cargo trailer, camper) My kitchen is on wheels tucks against the wall for travel but will be in the rear opening like a teardrop camper when parked. Can also be removed because my water is much like yours. Using a thick air mattress for now with an additional dinette that will sleep 2 more. Hope to make my own video but for now watch and learning from you all. Only thing I would do different on yours is make a thru wall connection for your solar panels so they can be charging during the day even when your using it.. Do not affix them to the roof like so many people do. They forget when parking the RV or trailer they always look for a shady spot to help keep it cool. Solar panels then get very little sun. Keep them mobile and prop them up out in the sun run the cord into the trailer.

One of my best upgrades is those multi packs of D-rings that hold several hundred pounds each. That way I can hang a hammock instead of a cot. And I can secure the kayak, bike, and totes with cargo webbing. That saves a lot of space. I've got everything fold down/fold away so I can get as much cargo as possible and I painted the floor with epoxy paint for easy cleanup. Thanks for tips and the video!

Love your sliding cabinet doors and folding beds. The PCV awning storage is ingenious too. What else does someone need eh. Functional and practical. Your spare tire rack made me think of somehow adding a outside tool storage box behind the fenders. For spare tire , Jack's etc.. Nicely done 👍

The tool box is a great idea. That’s one thing that is missing is storage for The odd accessories that don’t really have a place inside. I looked into putting a tool box on the A frame tongue but my tongue is just too short to make that work.

I like how you did yours, we did a 7x16 about 4yrs ago, sold it moved to KY and now we got a 7x12 we are going to turn into a camper also. Like you, we do it on a budget also mainly just camping and hunting from it. Just 2 of us ( retired ) so getting ready to start so. Thanks for yours online.

I see high quality work in your trailer and a very practical layout. I've done 2 trailers myself and my first one is almost identical to yours. On mine I put white elastomeric roof coating on it and 1 inch foil backed insulation in the roof and walls. That was the best improvement I made to the trailer.

Scissor Jacks - go to a junk yard and you can get them for like $5 each - not the "mounted" type, but just the ones from wrecked cars. Work fine.

A good addition for battery operated lights is a solar battery charger and rechargeable batteries. harbor freight has sales on a portable light that looks like a light switch (I have several)- I save soda can pop tops and bend them in half then paint with nail polish. I glue these to the top of the lights and now it has a hook that can mount anywhere.

One of the better presentations of a cargo trailer camper conversion. Your mounts for your awning stash PVC tube are the best yet. I will be using that idea, so thank you for that. I want to roll up my outdoor 5' X 7' galley carpet (my trailer's galley is at the rear door) and stash that in a 6" PVC tube, but was wondering how best to mount that to my trailer. I was going to mount it in the same spot you have yours. Your wonderful, well-behaved daughter Grace! was a treat! when she was able to climb into her bunk. How excited she is about that. So cool. I'm working on a slightly smaller version of your trailer. It's a 5 X 10' in which I will have a fixed (not folding) twin mattress bunk placed forward, aisle on the curb side, a wide side door, and again, the galley at the rear door which swings to curbside. One day I might even put a short video on yewtewb. Thanks again for showing us your rig. Save travels to you and your wonderful family - and - Happy Holidays.

@@TheBudgetSportsman To William , the single bed is also what I plan for my trailer . I grew up with bunk beds and I know they are still hiding somewhere in my family farm house . I am going to use D rings and chains to attach the frame to the wall , set to fold up similar to what is in this video .

Such a beautiful, simple, little build. The benefits of a Chinese Diesel Heater and insulation cannot be overstated, but that adds a level of complexity (heater, the insulation was easier than it seems. I am going to add a crossbar to the legs on my fold down bunks, so thanks for that. I’m also looking hard at your sliding door cabinet. The simplicity of that design, along with its effect is awesome. Thanks.

Thanks, we try to avoid camping in super cold weather and we have found a small electric heater does nicely as long as we have AC power. We are willing to work around our limitations to avoid the complexity, cost and space of other heaters.

If you do a sliding door on the cabinet just be sure to get proper material. Mine is too thin and the doors bow and warp easily.

Nice upgrades. Things evolve as you see what works and what could be improved. It’d get some scissor type jacks from a car (junk yard) to use instead of the jack stands. They could be adjusted and you could probably get some for practically nothing (budget friendly) 👍

that's a great idea. I found that Walmart and Harbor Freight both sell relatively inexpensive jacks, however I have to problems. One is making sure I have enough clearance, and the second bigger issues is mounting them since I am not much of a welder or fabricator. I am hoping to recruit my BIL to help with that project :)

Very minimalist, very close to what I have in mind for when I get a trailer. I hadn't considered using a Jackery as my primary power source, but that would definitely work, so long as I had solar readily available. I had more of a 3/4 bath in the nose in mind for myself, with an on demand hot water heater. A small kitchenette, just enough to put a rocket stove on if I was stuck inside because of the weather. I'm looking at getting one of those pop up screen rooms, and using that as my primary sitting area and food prep. One thing I had considered doing, if I went with a longer trailer, is putting in a wall across the rear, with a door and a window. What I had in mind was putting in a storm door and a window, or even mounting a 12v fan to draw air through and out. I figure no more than one foot inside the trailer, that way there's a small "porch", where I would store my pop up screen room and other things I would need to have ready access to when setting up camp. that way they are out of the way if I stopped for the night in transit between destinations. Don't know if that would be practical, but it's an idea. Anyways, great little camper you have, definitely proves you can be minimalist and still have nice things.
