UPDATED VIDEO WITH MORE DETAIL @ www.youtube.co...
NOTE: DO NOT TOW EVEN A MANUAL TRANS RWD WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE DRIVESHAFT. After making this video, I did some more research and many manual transmissions need input shaft to be spinning for proper lubrication. I was under the assumption that since a manual transmission generally does not have an oil pump mounted on the input shaft, that it would be okay to be towed in neutral with the rear wheels on the ground. NOT THE CASE and certainly not worth taking a risk.
Sorry about the poor audio quality in this video. It does get a little bit better as the video goes on. The above link is a longer version but certainly more comprehensive and clear.
This is a quick run down on how to use a Master Tow 80THD car dolly. For those of you wondering where my fenders are, well, the plastic dried out over the years and they ripped off one day! I have since replaced this dolly with a new one. CORRECTION: When I said leave the parking brake off, You actually want to leave it ON until you have the vehicle strapped down. In case it were to roll off the dolly. `

You can tow a vehicle backwards. However you must lock the steering so it doesn't crab-walk and as the weight is now shifted towards the rear it WILL fishtail if towed to fast. Interstate speeds would get you and someone else killed. Backward towing is only for low speed, slow roads AND emergency only. You can tow a standard transmission vehicle in neutral 😐. Only automatic transmissions need a moving input shaft due to the pump. Anyone who says different has never rebuilt either one. At the angle the truck (for example) sits when towed the output shaft is so low the thing is drowning in fluid constantly. I suppose if you towed one down a steep hill for 30 miles you might have an issue...because you would be getting close to the liquid hot magma. 😆 🤣

Great video and very informative. I wanna be clear if it’s an automatic trans AWD or RWD the driveshaft will need to be disconnected all time if the vehicle is being pulled on Dolly?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 5 жыл бұрын
Yes it should be disconnected in those cases. There are some exceptions to this rule though. Like for instance if you had a full floating rear axle you could just remove one of the axles.
@yvenskylebrun
@yvenskylebrun 5 жыл бұрын
NoNonsenseKnowHow what if it was a AWD manual just put it I. Neutral will be fine?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 5 жыл бұрын
@@yvenskylebrun in general, yes however it's still recommended to remove the rear driveshaft. I've heard it some manual transmissions are not lubricated properly if the input shaft is not spinning. So for local toes I'm sure it's fine, but going down the freeway long-distance better off disconnecting the rear driveshaft

For towing AWD vehicles, can't you just use those tow dollies that tow truck wreckers use to raise the other 2 wheels? So all 4 would be off the ground. Also what does it cost to maintain that dolly? Does anything tend to wear or fail besides tires?

Why can't you throw an automatic rear wheel drive in neutral and pull it?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 7 жыл бұрын
it's not that you can't do it. It's that I wouldn't recommend it. Basically , the transmission is lubricated with a oil pump that spins when the engine is running. So if you were to tow it in neutral without the engine running, the trans is not being properly lubricated and could be damaged or even seize up.

@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 7 жыл бұрын
MrBlaze256 Yes, you are correct, you don't know about it. lol. all joking aside though if you see somebody towing a rear wheel drive, automatic transmission vehicle chances are they have removed the drive shaft. I have personally seen an automatic trans in a Lincoln Mark VII lock up when the guy towed it without removing the drive shaft. Took about 50 miles on highway before it failed. Thanks for the comment! :)

Only for short distance at low speed. Backing a rear wheel drive, automatic transmission onto a dolly means your weight distribution is backwards. Your towed car will fish tail once you get past 45 mph. If I had to I will but slow and short distance.
