~~~NOTES~~~
~DO NOT TOW EVEN A MANUAL TRANS RWD WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE DRIVESHAFT. After making this video, I did some more research and many manual transmissions need input shaft to be spinning for proper lubrication. I was under the assumption that since a manual transmission generally does not have an oil pump mounted on the input shaft, that it would be okay to be towed in neutral with the rear wheels on the ground. NOT THE CASE and certainly not worth taking a risk.
~I did not talk much about the chains that come originally equipped with this dolly. After securing your car down with straps, you need to secure the chains around the front axle or frame. They serve as a safety in case one of the straps were to break.
great video , i have looked at a bunch of videos because I am going to be towing a 71 firebird to a friends and he wants me to back it up in an alley into his garage and i thought that was a terrible idea but no video before yours covered backing them up , and a firebird is also a little wide for the tow dolly , so no backing up for me, and you saved me from damaging the tow dolly and the car , thank you
Good information. I once towed a car with a manual transmission on a dolly. I left it in neutral, but my wife went behind me to double check everything and she put it in gear. The engine blew a few miles down the road. Dropping the drive line would have saved that car.
I’m a 61 year old woman and I can use the car dolly no problem. My husband is NO HELP when it comes to guiding me on or off the dolly due to some brain damage from a stroke so I have to get out and eyeball it myself. My car is a front wheel drive Prius and I tow it behind my RV. It has a low profile so I need to use blocks of wood as he describes. The hardest thing for me is loosening the ratchet.
I tell a lot of trailers, but I’ve never had a tow dolly before for our motorhome and I was looking for a video just to show me anything that I might not know. Basic mistakes but sometimes learn the hard way. Thanks from the UK
NoNonsenseKnowHow hey thanks for the reply! I think my Ford Explorers front tires has not been snug up against the front bumpstop of the dolly so the vehicle has too much play and is moving around and making the straps come loose every time! I tried doing the double loop through the metal ring and that seemed to help so now I think I need to perhaps make some custom pieces of 2X4 that I can place behind each tire to reduce the vehicle movement? Or try my other set of straps made by starrr products? Thanks
I can back a 53' trailer just about anywhere you can drag a rope, but backing up a tow dolly eats my lunch. The deck on a UHaul dolly is articulating... the trailer goes one direction, but the rear wheels of the towed vehicle can go in another. It's like trying to backup doubles! Next time I'm opting for an auto transport.
Very informative and useful video.I recently had to use a tow dolly like this to tow a 1998 GMC 1500 extended cab truck home.I had to use a 1991 Chevrolet S-10 to do this and it didn't have a receiver hitch.If this wasn't bad enough,I also had to load the GMC truck onto the tow dolly backwards because there wasn't a ring gear and pinion in the rear differential.It did fine until I turned into my driveway off of the main highway and then it almost came off! Finally got it back on and home.
Haha, sounds like a pretty sketchy ride! I've definitely had my fair share of experiences like that. Thanks for sharing! The first car I ever put on here was an old beat-up Porsche that I got for 300 bucks. I put it on backwards and didn't lock the steering. When I made a turn out onto the road, the front end of the car started riding in the opposite lane. LOL
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Sunday, I had to haul an automatic 325ci with a rear-air-bagged Grand Cherokee. 400 miles SoCal to NorCal. I've towed professionally for the last 15 years, repo, AAA, every crazy/illegal/insanely unsafe situation possible. This tow was the sketchiest haul I've ever done! It was wagging me hard. At 45 MPH it was trying to kill me. I had to set it at 40 MPH and cruise it white-knuckle the whole way. At that speed it was 12.5 miserable hours instead of the normal 5ish hours. Never again.
Great video. My husband and I have one of these we pulled behind our RV. He would always pull the car up and I’d strap it down while he tied down the steering wheel. I lost my husband this April and realized I didn’t remember everything he did inside the vehicle while I strapped the tires. I couldn’t remember if he left it in neutral (automatic transmission). I figured you would have to, but honestly wasn’t sure.
Good info, it's important to lock the steering wheel as the dolly is designed with the slider to limit the amount of steering angle so that no damage occurs to the vehicle being towed. For dollies without a slider, you must unlock the steering. I think I rather the slider tho because once I was forced to tow a 5,500 pound truck backwards to the recycling center with a 5,000 pound truck. I got up to 50 mph and learned quickly about death wobble. Backed down to 20-30 mph MAX and I was ok. So if your forced to tow backwards, I'd say you definitely need the slider, but I still wouldn't recommend it like you said.
