After Studying Zizek, Lacan and a plethora of other psychoanalysts, I claim that similar to Zizek's ideas that ideology arises in tension towards the impossible, it may be simpler to understand it from the perspective that ideology fills in the psychological voids left over from our earliest object relations and attachments with our caregivers. The easiest metaphor I can offer is that a compulsive gambler doesn't gamble to "win" but he is driven by an ideological phantasy of who he would be as a "winner". In other words what being a winner represents to him in regards to his sense of self. These are the missing parts of his early childhood years. The Voids.
