Mastering a Song Using ONLY Cubase Plugins

Today we're mastering a song using only native Cubase Pro 11 plugins.
I was pretty surprised and thrilled (and so was the client!)

I didn't think the multiband comp was subtle at all. It sounds absolutely INCREDIBLE!

I tried it and it worked. I got a little more gain reductions than you did so I backed off a little. In the end I got -10 LUFS with a peak of -3 db and it looks like the blue mix. I didn't get so much noise reduction as I got the low parts brought up. I was aiming for a CD mix and I think I got. it Thanks.

Great overview as usual! Liked the more dynamic range in the cubase plugin mix. Awesome song, got an 80s new wave vibe - hope it gets released. You should do a course for Groove3 : )

Absolutely! The process is generally the same. The processing, of course, just depends on what the song needs. :)

Nice but does -7 LUFS make sense in 2021/2022 when most streaming services are going to normalize down to -14 LUFS or worse? I've been aiming for -14 LUFS for masters to send to streaming services and then using Loudness Match to -9 LUFS in Adobe Audition for a "CD" version of the masters.

Wonderful question, Steven! Yes! Because despite streaming provider’s normalization targets. The target values themselves vary from service to service and in most cases- listener to listener. For example: Spotify generally normalizes to -14 LUFS. However, their free tier version, doesn’t implement any normalization. And premium accounts give listeners the ability to control how loud they want their normalization to be (if any at all). Apple Music, on the other hand, normalizes down to a whopping -16 LUFS but also gives the users the option to turn off/on the normalization. KZfaq is -12.5 LUFS, Pandora is -13.5, Tidal is -14.5, etc… So the normalization is really a “moving target” across the different platforms. I personally, like to have masters that can compete with or without normalization. So for this song, around -7 LUFS felt good to me. Which is plenty loud and competitive with most modern rock & indie rock tunes. At this level, the platforms don’t have to worry about turning me up, only down if need be. (And I know the track will respond perfectly fine to that adjustment.) But most importantly- I know the song will sound competent alongside other commercial releases no matter what. 🙂

Hey Raphael, Which version of 11 do you have? I believe many of the plugins are only included in the Pro versions and not the LE, AI, or Elements versions.

Of course! Loudness is an essential aspect of mastering. However, there is a difference between simply turning something up and maintaining/improving the song's tonal and dynamic characteristics while reaching its optimal loudness target. That's why if you null test this; you'll discover more going on. 🙂
