Great tutorial. I love the look of this strap and can't wait to try it. Your narrative is very well done. BTW, the hand sewing stitch you are doing at the beginning is called a "ladder stitch". Also a little tip: if you wax your hand sewing thread it won't knot. Thanks.

I love this braid. It looks amazing. I"m making tote bags for all five of my grown granddaughters for Christmas. These straps will really add an elegance to the bags. Just a suggestion: I was using faux leather, so i was able to put a safety pin in the ends which made it much easier to pass the tails back through the ex's. Thank you. I can't imagine how you came up with this idea!! It's brilliant!

I used some black and gray vinyl scraps and I was able to do it. It was very easy. Now I am going to look for red leather to make some handles. It looks so classy and expensive.

It really adds a lot in terms of style and elegance I think! Glad you found this useful!

Instead of using the stiletto to grab the strap to pull through, use a hemostat. A hemostat is actually made to grab things.

I have a stiletto on hand, so it’s what I use. I try to make due with what I have, instead of always buying new things. The stiletto works great.

@@EmporiumThreads I have had a hemostat in my sewing tool bag way longer than I’ve had a stiletto. I’d use the hemostat over a stiletto because the stiletto could punch through the material and make an irreparable hole. The hemostat is designed to grip so you can manipulate the gripped item. Great for pulling elastic through casings, pulling needles through hard or thick fabrics, etc.

Such a great tutorial. Can’t wait to try along with you. Can you explain the difference between vinyl and faux leather? The “faux leather” in my closet has a cloth backing, and I would think the edges would show. Thanks.

Faux leather and vinyl are basically one in the same. I sometime refer to some vinyls as “faux leather” when they are the type that have a pebble like texture and really could be mistaken for genuine leather. But in the end, any of the PVC (polyvinyl chloride) products are all just vinyls. In this video I show a couple of examples, one of which is vinyl that is backed with a mesh fabric (the gold strap). The sides of the cut vinyl do show but not the back, so I think you’d be okay to try it out. I have made several with felt backed vinyl as well as the mesh style and they have all been great looking.

Beautiful! Would this work for cork, or would the backing fray too much?
@EmporiumThreads
@EmporiumThreads Жыл бұрын
I think you could certainly do this with thicker corks and have have an issue. High quality cork would be recommended.

What is the pattern you used for the bag that you put the strap on in the end of the video?
@EmporiumThreads
@EmporiumThreads Жыл бұрын
It’s the Stephie shoulder bag, from Linds Handmade designs :) I removed the zipper closer and changed the top a tiny bit but otherwise, it’s that pattern. You can do the pattern as written and still add this trap just fine.

I am making the Stephie bag atm and came here to watch this video to see if I could tackle this strap. Is there a reason you made the strap shorter than the pattern?
@EmporiumThreads
@EmporiumThreads Жыл бұрын
Yes. I made it shorter because once you add the lobster claws and D ring hardware, you end up with the same or adequate length strap for this bag as the pattern originally calls for. Each lobster claw adds on about 1.5-2” and each D ring and tan to attach to the bag adds about 2” in length as well. The original pattern does not call for this hardware or the D rings. You sew the strap directly into the bag which. I wanted a drop handle. As well as I wanted the fancy strap, which can’t be sew directly into the bag for a few a reasons. I also made the strap to my preference of length for my body. The length is subjective to each person and you can make your wonder strap any length you desire :) Hope you make the strap and love it!

Where do you purchase your 1/8" basting tape?

Amazon! It’s 3M brand but I don’t recall the seller. It’s not made for sewing but it works well for me.
