Indigenous affairs academic Anthony Dillon says the “masterpiece” book by anthropologist Peter Sutton and archaeologist Keryn Walshe “politely” points out the errors in Bruce Pascoe’s ‘Dark Emu’ thesis.
Mr Dillon told Sky News host Chris Kenny he is “very pleased” to see the debate over Dark Emu coming out.
“We’ve been hearing it for a while, we’ve had some good commentary,” he said.
“But Sutton and Walshe have just come out with a masterpiece book.”

To what end? They never had draft animals so nobody could imagine a horse pulling a cart. Had they had horses or cattle they might have done. The Incas had the same problem - any cart they could pull they could just carry the load strapped to their backs (of llamas and alpacas). No need for a wheel. Native Americans - same story again. You can't tame a buffalo and they didn't get horses until the Spanish showed up. And then they just followed their herds as per usual, again with no need for a wheel. Give them time though and they might have done. Everybody else did.

Best use for "Dark Emu" is as toilet paper whilst reading a selection of Len Beadell's books detailing observations and interactions with remote Aboriginal tribes in SA\WA\NT over thirty odd years. Those colonisers took less than 200 years to create a first world country on the same land the aboriginals had been surviving on for better than 40000 years with no noticeable progress. Did the aboriginals have some decent desert living strategies? Yep. Does that out weight never having developed the wheel, pottery, any form of metallurgy, a written language, etc? I’d suggest no.

People should remember that there was never a chance to advance past the Hunter/Gatherer society. Zero animals or plants that could be domesticated to promote a stationary lifestyle and the development of towns. Surface copper deposits are basically in the desert in South Australia with surface tin 1,000 miles away in Qld so the development of metal tools becomes impossible. Aboriginal people were definitely *not* stupid, but the layout of the continent meant that without technology it couldn't be developed. Besides, anyone who can survive in a land where these things are wandering around _has_ to be smart, or you're dead. www.thoughtco.com/overview-of-megalania-1093509
