Sneak peek: The official opening credits of Masters of the Air, now streaming on Apple TV+ apple.co/_MastersOfTheAir
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
The series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann, who are joined by Raff Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
Hailing from Apple Studios, "Masters of the Air" is executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Television, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman for Playtone. Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey co-executive produce alongside Playtone’s Steven Shareshian. In addition to writing, Orloff co-executive produces. Graham Yost also serves as co-executive producer. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten serve as directors.

For me the series is interesting for similar reasons, my grandfathers (both of them) belonged to the crew of a He-177, one as a radio operator, the other as a gunner, they fought on the other side of the war but the missions were probably similar. They deserted from the Wehrmacht in Greece in 1944 and were also reluctant to talk about their experiences.

So appreciative of all that put so much into making this film to honor these men. My grandfather, George McKee, was a B-17 pilot for the 390th which was one of the three bomb groups (along with the 100th and 95th) that made up the 13th combat wing; consequently, he flew in a number of the missions detailed in Masters of the Air. When the book came out in 2007 he told me it was the most accurate description he had read of what they experienced. He made a career of the Air Force serving 36 years and rising to the rank of Lieutenant General (he started as a private and air mechanic in 1940). In 1973 he became commander of the 8th Air Force. For those interested in the history of these brave individuals the 8th Air Force Museum just outside of Savannah, GA is fantastic. The 390th Bomb Group also has a museum in Tucson, AZ.

@SEscarlett: I have ZERO nostalgia for the America or for the world of the 1930s-1940s or for WWII. I think that there is far too much over simplisification and sugar of coating of those times and events in order to tell and to sell a feel good morality tale. I also think that most of the lessons learned from that conflict were the wrong ones and that humanity is still paying for that to this very day. That said, I am happy that your relative came out of the other side of that horror show apparently unscathed and that he lived a long and happy life.

One spent much of his life in his vegetable garden and his job and the other threw himself into work. One of them was a B-17 pilot in the Pacific who said nothing until one summer day when I was visiting we stayed up to watch a re-run of a favourite TV show. When the credits rolled Gramps sat up and said "I know that guy from the war. He was a damn fine pilot." The guy Gramps remembers was Gene Roddenberry. After that I could not get him to stop his stories, I took down everything and recorded as much as I could. It was not until my twenties when I was worried about something stupid that I realized I was older than my grandfather when he flew his first mission.

I was a teen when I first watched Band Of Brothers and fell in love with it, but Masters Of The Air somehow managed the impossible task of becoming my absolute favourite of this WWII trilogy. Since around episode 3 just watching this intro brought tears in a way that nor BOB or The Pacific could. The emotional connection to the characters and missions, the evocation of such a terrible but better time the likes of which my generation will never have the privilege to live was just too strong. MOTA is a true masterpiece and let's hope this doesn't end in a trilogy and given enough time and careful production a new WWII series arises from Playtone and Amblin. The world needs this stories and heroes be showcased with the respect and quality that only this companies can deliver.

I think it's because people wanted it to be Band of Brothers 2.0, but they're different shows. BoB is about the bond of soldiers and how they fought and died for each other. The Pacific is about the brutality of war and the destruction it causes. Both are excellent.

I will watch it a few times. That said, for the folks complaining about the opening sequence: both "BoB" and "The Pacific" were highly stylized. Personally, I like the dream-like/memory haze feel that this opening conveys. Also, CGI is a must. The producers aren't going to have real combat scenes with B-17s and BF 109s over the skies of Europe. That is absurd. Finally, "The Pacific" was great, esp. if you have read EB Sledge's and/or Robert Leckie's memoirs.

Although we are still fighting for peoples rights today (and not the same fight you fought) on American soil for those to live free from persecution of all types, the family still fights for those that cant fight for themselves. I walked through 3 B-17's. The first time I did, I was amazed as to the thinness of the metal structure. I likened it to that of a Grumman canoe. No protection from bullets, FLAK or the cold. Best 17 walk-through was Kermit Week's in FL. After Hurricane Andrew made it unflyable, he set up the walkthrough with sound effects and mannequins.

For those of us that watched Band of Brothers and The Pacific, and have been waiting for this show for what? 10 years? This is absolutely amazing. While I understand that some people may be a bit hesitant because of the CGI on this show as opposed to the previous two, I guarantee you it’s a lot easier to find hundreds of M1 rifles than it is to find hundreds of airworthy B-17s nowadays. If Spielberg and Hanks still desire to do more WWII miniseries, I hope we get to see one either from the point of view of other allied nations, or about the 442nd infantry regiment.
