The back story to Skeletor is he's Keldor the brother to King Randor which makes him He-Man's uncle. He was mortally wounded in battle and turned to Hordak to save his life. He was then merged with an extra dimensional being and turned into Skeletor.

Fun fact; while Sylvester Stallone was working on the edit for “Over the Top,” he went to the set of “Masters,” looked at Dolph Lundgren, and yelled to Menahem Golan (the CEO of Cannon Films) “You’re giving this guy lines?” Which considering he was working on “Over the Top” means either Dolph still hadn’t grasped English, or Sly was just that oblivious.

Even as a kid I knew Man-at-arms was the best character in the film.

Funny to hear the Evelyn/Evil-Lyn comment. In the original MOTU cartoon treatment, Evil-Lyn was actually an Earthling named Evelyn before coming to Eternia. But in the final show, the only Earthling is He-Man’s mother, Queen Marlena.

Actually the first movie with a post-credit stinger scene was the comedy spy film The Silencers from 1966. Great film too.

No, she's right. Time is space and space is time, to travel through one is to travel through the other to an extent.

There are several iterations of the story and I will try to compile and answer your questions.. One is that all of the ancient sorcerers compiled all their magic and hid it deep away in castle Grayskull from the Big bad of the time Hordak and the Horde. Skelator wants this Magic and so is always trying to take castle Grayskull. The Sorceress who guards the castle cannot leave however because part of a big spell they all used to banish the big bad Horde meant that the Sorceress could not leave or the spell would weaken and a new sorceress would always have to take over when she was close to death. However, they can pick a champion. The campion in the original was Prince Adam and she gives him the sword. The sword is a conduit for power and he transforms into He-man to protect the castle, he would lift the sword in the air and say "by the power of Grayskull, I have the power". (Fun fact, the newest iteration of the show has a team that can use the power to transform, kind of like power rangers). Another version which I think is better and what the movie leans into is this: Castle Grayskul sits at the literal centre of the universe. This is because a piece of heaven fell from the god’s realm and landed there. When it landed it caused the big bang that created the universe. The planet Eternia is inhabited by all manner of beings and it is literally split down the middle of light and dark with Grayskull on the boarder. The Sorceress is the current guardian of Grayskull and she maintains the balance of good and evil, but she has the power at her fingertips of a god because the one who rules Grayskull effectively has access to the power of creation. This is why she cannot leave the castle but she can choose a Champion. There has been many different sorceress’s throughout the iterations as well as many different Champions who all effectively become the "He-Man", there is Prince Adam, Oo-Lar, Prince Dare, King Grayskull, the original He-Ro and of course Princess Adora who becomes She-RA. Skelator also has many different origin stories. One is that he is He-Mans (Prince Adams) Uncle Keldor. One story says that King Randors father Miro had an affair with a woman from the "Gar" a race of beings from the dark side of Eternia and they forged a shaky truce and Keldor became an advisor to his half-brother Randor. 2 different stories from this: One is that Keldor and the Gar tried to overthrow Randor and some magic backfired removing Keldors face. Another is that Keldor tired of this role and wanted to devote his time to magic so became a wander. During his travels and while performing magic that he shouldn’t have, he then accidently contacted a strange entity that he began to worship, and this entity promised him powers if he gave himself up. It was Hordak, who possessed him with an evil spirit and Keldor became Skelator. Another Origin story is that when King Grayskull used the power of the castle to banish the Horde Skelator was left behind and is simply an evil minion of the Horde. The movie was a commercial flop and was hated by fans because at the time of release there was only two different iterations of He-Man and one of them was barely even known (comics). The films budget was halved right before start and the script radically changed to incorporate Earth as this would be cheaper. Fans were not happy with this, which is strange as canonically, He-Man is half earthling in the version most people love. Frank Langella loved the role and did it for his kids. He got super jacked and was upset when he couldn’t show off his physique. Dolph could barely speak English so they cut a lot of his lines down and almost dubbed him at one point. Production ran out of money before the movie was finished and the final fight scene was filmed by cast and crew for free. A sequel was planned and scrapped but the costumes were eventually used on van dammes cyborg movie. Evil-Lyns real name was actually Evalyn so you were right Teela is the captain of the Eternian guard, and adoptive daughter of Duncan. Duncan is known as “Man-at-Arms” which is a historical title, the role of a Man-at-Arms was to advise the ruling planetary monarch in weapons and warfare, and the Royal Guard on military and police affairs. As you can probably tell I am a huge fan of the series! I even had a sword commissioned from a smith that is almost identical to the one used in the film.

[5:00 & 34:04 & 42:15] Reason the troopers look like black stormtroopers due to Mattel's early demands on director Gary Goddard that HE-MAN could not kill or really hurt anyone. So he went with these troops being more "robotic" so he could smash/fight/blast them not making it look like he's killing humans. [5:40] Definitely a skull mask prostetic over Frank Langella's face. And a damn good one despite what the hipsters say. [9:30] "I don't like adventures" was kinda a nod line to JRR Tolkien's Hobbit series. [13:16] No that's Billy Barty. Though Barty would appear with Warwick Davis a year later in WILLOW. [33:33] Unf in the 80s when this film released, only 3 toys from the film were made: Blade, Sarod (I think) and Gwildor. [40:57 & 43:02] The gold suit was certainly a challenge for Anthony De Longis (Blade) who doubled as God Skeletor in the sword fight scene twirling that staff/mace around with the helmet. [48:14] Battle Cat. A green tiger. That would've been great to see for the finale of this film. [48:32] Director Gary Goddard apparently thought Dolph's accent was still thick/horrible even coming off of Rocky 4. At first he was going to hire a voice over artist to dub over him. Then Menagham at Cannon Film said no and that Dolph had in his contract he would have 5 chances to record his own lines and after a few tries he barely got it. I think he did fine and looked the part and a half to make up for not speaking much). [49:43] "By the power of grey skull . . . I have the power!!" was the line from the cartoon when "Prince Adam" turns into He-Man. Gary Goddard did not want to have the concept of Prince Adam in this film. Just wanted He-Man as He-Man already. [51:00] What's funny is Cannon Film's had a half/half pay agreement with Mattel to make the film. Mattel put up their half, burned through it, then when they asked Cannon for their have they coldly said "NO!!" being the wheeler/dealers they were. They even shut the film down before the He-Man/Skeletor fight could be filmed and Gary had to pay out of his own pocket to finish the swordfight on a backlit set there. [51:05] There "kinda" was a sequel. It just didn't end up as Masters of the Universe 2. It was set to begin but Cannon went bankrupt and the director who was given the project later retooled the film into "CYBORG" with Jean Claude Van Damn.

Evil-Lyn was always my fave. What a nasty lass she is. “Only one of you Kevin. Only one of anybody!” I always thought that was kinda sweet.

Guidor or Grilldor or whatever, was played by actor Billy Barty who was also the camera man in Weird Al Yankovic’s movie UHF which I think you guys watched? He plays a funny role in a raunchy, early 80’s comedy Night Patrol which yall should watch but Im not sure KZfaq will let you show it. His Career spanned 70 years from 1930 to the year 2000. He’s in a lot of classics actually.

This film is a pure Saturday Afternoon classic and I'll hear nothing else. The casting is absolutely perfect. Great to see ya watching this! ❤

Frank Langella really chewed up the scenery as Skeletor in this.

The character of Gwildor was a replacement for Orkol in the cartoon, I think. Orkol was a short, floating wizard, and that would have been too expensive to create. :D There was an origin given to Skeletor in the 2002 anmated series reboot; He was Keldor, half-brother of King Randor, and was horribly injured in battle with him when trying to take his throne. His face was burning off and in desperation, he made a pact with an ancient evil named Hordak to save his life. He survived, but was transformed into Skeletor and bound to the will of Hordak.

The FRIENDS theme song made me laugh. I really like Masters of the Universe, I've owned a copy of it on both VHS and DVD, and I went to the movie when it was in theaters when I was very young.

I think that the actress who plays teela was also a flight attendant in the movie commando.

He also played in the very first (The Punisher) movie which was in the 80s, I believe.

I know this was on a cut budget and a rushed schedule (Cannon were infamous for doing everything on the cheap), but this is still an enjoyable movie! Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella did tremendously well in their roles!

One of my favorite early theater memories, I came home and drew all of the characters! Even at 7 I wondered why they went to Earth and that Gwildor was just a substitute for Orko, but I still liked it.

"not without our parachutes" I laughed and laughed. Good reaction guys, no surprise. I can't remember if I saw this movie in the cinema when it was new, but I definitely saw it on VHS soon after. I never cared for the tv series, but this movie was right down my alley. Alien invaders on Earth, etc. Plus beautiful women, and chicken! What more do you want in life? Video games, but still not bad.

The score was from Bill Conti, the guy who did Rocky and The Karate Kid. It's definitely one of the very best of the classic 80s fantasy scores.

The producers couldn’t make an armored talking green tiger, or a floating Trollan wizard, or set the film entirely on planet Eternia, or include more of the cartoon’s well-known characters, or He-Man’s alter-ego, Prince Adam… but it’s still a pretty good film, all things considered.

Staple of my 80’s childhood

As an OG Masters of the Universe fan, I have to say that this movie sucked sooo bad when I first saw it but now I can enjoy the abomination for what it was. I do agree that Frank Langella played a killer Skeletor! He said he really enjoyed playing him & put his all into the character. But where’s the characters I grew up & played with? The original comics that came with the figures were the best version in my opinion. That story started differently from the cartoon. Still the. 80’s were a great time to be a kid in America. 🇺🇸

*Skeletor Origin Expert* You see, a long time ago on Eternia, King Miro ruled on high with two sons. Randor and Keldor. Randor was Miro’s youngest son, and Keldor was the oldest and the crown prince of Eternia. However, Keldor was the result of an affair with a alien species known as the Gar, which was a race banished from all Eternia trade for crimes against the crown. Even though Keldor was the oldest son, and it was his birthright to have the crown, Miro proclaimed his son unworthy due to his Gar blood, and named Randor Crown Prince. Keldor was sent back home to Anwat Gar. But he grew bitter and angry, dreaming of power! That’s when he met Hordak, the conqueror. He saw an opportunity in Keldor, and trained him, and taught him to hate his family. He then gave Keldor the Havoc staff, an ancient and dark magic, that corroded his face, and turned him into the Lord of Destruction, Skeletor!

People like to shit on this movie and say it's cheesy or corny or crappy but I love this movie. I grew up with it and other Dolph movies (like The Punisher) and they are some of my favorite comfort movies of all time.

Re: If you can travel through space you can travel through time - In sci-fi settings that can be how it works, eg if the key opens a worm hole then there's no reason why it couldn't work that way.

This movie is a guilty pleasure :) Did you know Cannon took the budget from Superman 4 for this movie thinking it will be a hit. That is why Superman 4 has such low special effects. Y You should also see The Punisher 1989 with Dolph another great underacted movie and Blind Fury with Meg Foster and Rutger Hauer.

You all are the first people I have ever seen react to this movie. I love this movie nostalgically. Guilty pleasure. They tried, but didn’t have the budget necessary. Frank Langella is genuinely wonderful. He loved playing the role, and will still occasionally speak fondly about it.

Skeletor's backstory German radio play version: A race of giants have poisoned their home planet and flown to Eternia. (The part of Eternia later became known as the Desert of Time) The race is trying to separate itself from the evil within itself. They transferred this evil into a skeleton. Then they threw this skeleton into the time stream. It ends in a future in which the giants have left Eternia again. There it became known as a skeletor. (similar to Skin Of Evil TNG 1×23)

Late here. Aside their are some performances that are legendary in retrospect they did a lot of prolific things with this film that while at the time probably escaped notice are notable to this day in and outside of the franchise.

Langella was great as Skeletor, and actually talked positively about the experience years afterwards.

Can't believe you didn't recognize Evil Lynn as the TV executive from They Live , the best casting ever . Evil because of the color of those eyes , she didn't have to wear special contacts . The voice of the little inventor sounded like Billy Barty , the wizard in Willow . I don't know if have seen it , but if not you should .

Favorite He-Man character? Probably Rattlor of the Snake-Men because of the cool toy. Of this movie? Detective Lubic, of course!

I was a huge he-man fan 35, 38 years ago. And this movie came out and we went to see it. And it was sold out, and my father never took me to another theater to see it, or back another day. I wrote the most cringey 2nd grade essay on how bad that day sucked

This was released in August 87. Adventures in Babysitting was released June 87. So it still has the first end credits scene that i know of.

Well Mr Movies, you've got a few months time to get yourself into shape like Dolph Lundgren was in the 80's for Halloween. 😜 I didn't even know this movie existed back in the day (no internet etc.) until my mum came home from shopping one day and had bought it on VHS for me. It was sooooo disappointing but I acted like I loved it as we weren't a family with much money and she'd purchased it as a treat for me.
