These small car restorations come out so much nicer when you take that extra step of sanding, buffing, or other ways smoothing the surface before painting. Very entertaining to watch.

Excellent. Using cockpit spray on the wheels is a new one on me...I'll give it a try. When you do get a drill press you will find doming the axles so much easier,..especially when the wheels are recessed under mudguards (you call them fenders). A drill press also helps when drilling out the rivet post. I see that one post mentions using a cup head nail punch to dome axles...that really works as well. This is an excelllent restoration....keep up the good work!
@MatchboxRestoration5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to give some advice! I'll look into the head nail punch method. I'm a bit afraid it will bend the axles, though. I'll try it on one of my next restorations!

Bright light for painting is good. Manufacturing and body shops use lots of fluorescent tube lights. I myself use one of those magnifying lamps with a circular tube and another 4' twin light over the spray area.

One tip - you might want to buy a pin hammer with a pein end. It’s a smaller hammer with a smaller head. Less likely to damage paintwork if it slips.

You may want to look for a 'cupped-tip nail punch' for creating a 'mushroom' on the axle ends. That might make that process a bit easier. (If anything, it will prevent that hammer from getting too close to your finished restoration.)

I've just subscribed. Your restorations look great and your modifications to Marty's techniques are also terrific. That is, using a hammer instead of a drill press to reform the axle flange. I've started collecting Matchbox and Hot Wheels for my own restorations because back in the '60s I loved playing with these cars. Now that I am 60 it's time to play with them again by restoring them back to their original (or better than original) state.

Several recommendations: Short: 1) Use Floor Polishing liquid to clear the transparent plastics (this is from Marty's videos) 2) Use 2-pin drill press, like Marty does. Hammering the axles bears the risk of bending them 3) to clear the paint use the same paint stripper Marty uses (you are in the same country, so it should be easy to find the same) 4) When removing the lip, hold the near-by wheel in order not to scratch it with the sanding roll from the Dremel tool. 5) To de-oxydize the car, you might use electrolysis and electroplating (more details here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g61jnJBjxtjZfoE.html) 6) For the clear view on the top coating, as you've said in the video - use a brighter lamp or many bright lamps. Turn them off afterwards. 7) Drill the rivet post while dissembling the car, and leave there the screw, in order to protect the interior from accidental paint occurrence. 8) at the end on the rotating disk show the car before the restoration (so you need to record this before starting the restoration) and then add the video on already restored car (this can be seen on the most of the Marty's video) 9) Put some oil on the tap, when making the threading. Do not put too much, as hydraulic pressure might be formed and ruin the post. (Marty shared this in his videos) 10) Use transparent decals, not stickers. In time the stickers shall become yellowish. 11) Re-purpose a drill bit for the rivets, making the tip of the drill bit shallower, this way reducing the probability to puncture the whole roof or other surface on the other side of the rivet. Long: for tips 1, 2, 3, and 4, 7, 8, 9, and 11 watch all the videos of Marty. There he P.S. English is not the primary language for me.

How 'bout using a "nail set" to round over your axle hubs? They come in various sizes..one should work with your axle diameter. It'll get that hammer blow safely away from that freshly painted body.
@MatchboxRestoration5 жыл бұрын
I'll look into that. I thought about this but didn't see me hold the model, the tool and then using a hammer at the same time... Maybe I'll figure something out for my next restorations.
@cattmann14055 жыл бұрын
@@MatchboxRestoration Well don't overthink it...lol. I don't think it'll be as difficult as you're imagining it to be. $8 for a set of three is a bit cheaper than a drill press. Either way, have fun with it! Your paint is looking great!
@callumwearne78705 жыл бұрын
I would've masked the compressor and left it bare metal then painted the rest of the body then clear coated the whole thing personally (would've made it a little more detailed and interesting)

Until you get a drill press take a nail and put it in your vice and create an indent into the head of the nail. (You can use it later in the drill press) Then just tamp on the other end of the nail. (I'd flatten the point!) Then as you tap it with the hammer, move it around a bit to help round out the end of the axel. You can also just chuck this up in your hand drill, and use that as well. I've done that before. I kept waiting to see the hammer hit the truck fender and ruining your work!
@MatchboxRestoration5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your advice. I looked into this while doing my first restorations and made some "tools" like the one you described. The thing is that it's hard to keep both the axle and hand drill in one line and apply pressure to it. It kept moving from its vertical position when I applied the pressure needed to form the axle. I do like the first suggestion, I might try it in a future restoration.

Hello to you too! :)
@bwilliams4635 жыл бұрын
Very enjoyable. I just found your channel, so I was wondering about your technique on the axles: grinding off one of the nubs and then re-creating it by hammering the ground-off end worked fine, here; but if you had an axle that didn't have as much side-to-side play as this one - or was rusted or bent - do you fabricate new axles? Marty's Matchbox Makeovers usually just snips the axles in the middle and then makes new ones out of rivets. I would like to see you tackle a larger model, as was commented earlier in this section, but maybe something more unusual than a King Size; something like a Battle King tank, or a Sea King, or even a Yesteryear. Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go watch all of your previous videos (so much for going to bed early, tonight...)
@MatchboxRestoration5 жыл бұрын
Haha, watching all my previous videos couldn't take much longer than 15 minutes at this time 😄Thanks for the kind words! You are right about the axle-method I'm using right now. It has it's limitations. I have 1.6mm diameter nails laying around to replace axles that can't be refurbished. But as long as the original ones are in good condition, I'm planning on re-using them where possible. I have a couple larger models laying around from when I was a kid. Maybe I'll restore one as a special in between. 😊

@@MatchboxRestoration Yeah, right after I posted that, I realized you hardly had any vids posted, yet.
