Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

Marty's Matchbox Makeovers

Күн бұрын

A rather unassuming original Matchbox diecast car. Looked like an easy fix but, as usual, it didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. It was good to breath some life into an old toy but in all honesty, I could have done better. I did this over three days and I believe that the stop start approach was partly to blame.
I hope you still enjoy watching the video. It's not all about the model, I always try to make the videos entertaining and enjoyable to watch regardless of the outcomes. Let me know your thoughts, I read every comment posted. Marty.

Dear Marty I am a Turk and love to watch your channel while building my model kits. I just want to honor these brave men (Mehmets and Johnnys) who fought in Gallipoli. May I just remind you that we use the name Istanbul (used for 500 years) not Constantinople (Ancient name)? Also I would like to share the words of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk the founder of Turkish Republic who once fought in Gallipoli; “Those heroes that shed their blood in this country! You are in the soil of a friendly country. Rest in peace. You are lying side by side, bosom to bosom with Mehmets. Your mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries! Wipe away your tears. Your sons are in our bosom. They are in peace. After having lost their lives on this soil they have become our sons as well.”

Dear Marty, I am following up your channel since the beginning. I have Matchbox diecast cars since decades and my son is now playing with them. By the way, I am Turkish and proud of being Turkish. As you know, there is also very nice film of Russell Crowe which is "Water diviner" regarding ANZAC subject. In addition we have no koalas in Turkish land but we have millions of brave hearts and heros. And people is very welcome Gallipoli for Anzac day to Turkey every year. Hope this pandemic situation ends asap and people comes for it again. Thanks for this nice restoration video.

As attributed to Kemal Atatürk; "Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours... You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."

I used to own a 1960 Beetle. The first model with a square back window. It had a 6 volt battery. The round bit on the engine lid was a light for the number plate. It had a lockable handle to open it with.

I bought a second-hand Beetle (A$350 in1975) for my daily transport when I was a poor uni student. It had a crap paint job and eventually I discovered it also had very smokey motor. So in fear of an expensive repair job, I hurriedly repainted it with roof-paint using a hand brush and advertised it in the Sunday Times "Bargain Cars" section. Amazingly I was able to quickly sell it, and got my $350 back, then bought a second hand Mini which lasted for quite a few years. Now you tell me that a Matchbox Beetle is worth more than a full-size Beetle cost!

I couldn't recall whether or not I'd had one of these back in the 1960s - until you opened the bonnet, then the memory of doing exactly that came flooding back. How strange that small detail triggered the memory. Thank you for that, Marty - a really enjoyable video as always. Well done for acknowledging ANZAC day too. When I was a boy, I thought the first World War had been fought by strange men who only existed in black and white and who moved in a jerky, silent fashion, but as I got older (I'm about the same age as you) I understood that it was men just like us who went and gave their lives, which I find quite sobering. If you have not watched the recent documentary movie 'They Shall Not Grow Old', I recommend you do. It is (partly colourised) WW1 footage with the jerky motion corrected and with commentary narrated by real WW1 soldiers, who presumably recorded their memories of that conflict some time ago.

@@RavenMacy comemercated and celebrated are pretty much the same thing. Theirs no disrespect. They do differ a little however you still remember something and in some fashion you cherish that day. Be it a birthday or a battle you have won. It can even be a lost love one. It's remembering a day that something happened. That dosent mean it's a party. Their may be different meanings in different countries of words. But I would never disrespected any ones special day. I think it wonderful to hear of events in other places by the people and not from a book or tv. You learn so much more. Have a beautiful day. Stay safe and we'll in this crazy virus time.

Hi Marty, great video, keep up with the details as you work. As like most, I am spending a LOT of time in house, apart from my electronics hobby I have taken up making paper/cardboard models, there are lots of free templates. I do the same, sit down and head down, bum up and just have fun, with the odd play with my 3yo grandson. Quieter after he has gone to bed, late nights are so peaceful. I made him a heavy playable knock around Shuttle cardboard model for him to play with as he liked the paper one grandad had made.

My dad used to drive an early '60s VW bug that was a light tan in color. As a child I remember going around in it. Next car was a 71-72 VW squareback in gteen. This was the car I learned to drive on in 1977.

I do appreciate that you leave the mistakes and the setbacks in. I enjoy the realistic representation of it. Anything you care about gets frustrating. If you didn't care you would never be upset because a terrible outcome wouldn't be a problem. Passion makes you upset sometimes, but also makes the rewards greater. Kind of like having kids I guess. You don't get upset if they get into trouble unless you care. If you care too much and are upset all the time you need therapy.

Hi Marty, good job, as usual. There is an option to remove the added paint respecting in most cases the original and in this case could have worked, although it was a bit damaged. It is to use an oven cleaning foam: put the car in a plastic bag, cover it with the foam, close the bag, and leave it to work for 4 or 5 hours. Then it is removed and washed under the water with a small brush, just as it is done with the paint remover. The good part is that it don't attack the plastic, so it can be done without opening the car as it does not need to remove the transparent parts. It does attack the chrome, although the Lesneys do not carry it, but the chrome of superfast wheels would disappear, for example. Thank you for making this closure more entertaining. Greetings from Spain

Very nice job on one of Lesney's humbler models (they can't ALL be 1908 Rolls Royces!) And I agree, there's times when one thinks, "why am I doing it? This is taking forever, it's not going to turn out, it's going to look awful!" But the sow's ear comes out a silk purse after all. 😎 The newspaper should watch how it places its headlines - - it seemed like the boater brewed his iced tea using his own wee. Which I suppose is possible? 😖 Looking forward to the next eight hundred-odd videos! Hope you and yours stay safe.

Marty that was pure gold advice you gave about getting away and enjoying some solitude every once in a while. My wife and I both believed in this and we each gave each other that time to ourselves. It was understood that neither of us hated each other but you do need time to spend with your own thoughts and to enjoying something you liked to do. Myself. I enjoyed designing patches on my computer that would/could be used by emergency services. I've gone on to long but I did want to comment on that wonderful advice you gave.

Those vents below the rear window on a Beetle are hot air exhaust vents. This is probably more information than you wanted, but here goes: An aircooled VW engine can be thought of as two motorcycle engines laid on their side and connected at their base to a common crankcase. The cylinder heads are horizontal, with fins on the outside. That semi-circular up and over bit at the back of the engine is the top of a fan shroud which encases the upper part of the engine, and it operates like a vacuum cleaner. A rotary drum fan inside is spun by the engine pulley, sucking air up from below the car, across the fins on the cylinder heads, and into the engine. The heated air then exhausts out the back of the shroud into the rear of the engine compartment. So that set of vents below the window is located above the engine to allow the hot air to escape upwards.

Great restoration again Marty, like you said, sometimes the simplest looking jobs turn out to be the most problematic, but that's where we add to our experience and work toward improving our technique. Glad to see you remembering the ANZAC forces and the brave men that died fighting. God bless and stay safe.

Looks good to me. You made the best repair. The fault, or lump in the casting must have slipped past quality control. Not the only one. I restored a Volvo F12 truck - a later Superfast. Once the paint was stripped, I noted the tray drop side details were not properly formed, and there were casting lumps on the tray/load bed floor. Filed the faults as much as I could, and repainted the model anyway. It will never win a contest, but looks better than what I started with.

Hi, Marty, and thanks for another great video. I do have some bad news, however. I'm pretty sure 1960 was 60 years ago. Born in 63, myself, so I'm right with you. Enjoy the day!

Lest we forget indeed. Nice tribute. That car reminds me of my first car in 1980, a 1971 Superbeetle in almost that exact colour. I used to joke that it did 0-60mph in 3 days.

I had a '66 Beetle with a '70s Super Beetle engine in it when I was in college. I remember a friend remarking on a highway on-ramp, "Oh that's so cute, it's trying to accelerate!" I had to tell him it was actually a _hot rod_ Beetle, with _twenty percent_ more horsepower than a normal one... all of 60 as opposed to the original 50. :)
