In this latest video we reorganise our toy shed to make room for some upcoming arrivals, this involves getting out our Centurion BARV, The Chieftain main battle tank, the ford V8 flatbed and the Reo 6WD Army Truck. Will we be able to work out how to operate the chieftains gun turret electronically or is it irreparable?

When starting the L60 keep the FIP solenoid (middle switch) switched off. Turn over the engine to build oil pressure to supply the top crank then flick the switch down. Ex VMA.

You must have the Aux Genny running to power the elevation and traverse metadynes, or you must have the main engine revolutions at 1,000 rpm or greater to run the metadynes if the Aux Genny is not running. The ONLY exception to this is to use the Overide Master Control (OMC) switch which can take battery power direct to the traverse and elevation motors. Once the OMC is engaged it gives full power to everything regarding the turret services, we called it the Oh My Christ Switch and I strongly advise you not to use it and to never, and I mean NEVER to switch if from training to the battle position. It was always a last resort to get the turret services working in a dire emergency ie life or death situations to get the tank to engage the enemy. I advise always switch the Aux Genny on first to charge the batteries then start the main engine, another bonus of using the Aux Genny is it saves fuel and will warm up the main engine coolant - they both share the same cooling system. God I miss my Chieftain 01FD02, the bastards smelted it as part of an arms reduction treaty - can you believe it!!!!

You have a good memory, Normally the OMC was lockwired so it could only be switched in an emergency. I was a Cheiftain trained gunner 1978 onwards. See they still have a shroud for the .50 Ranging gun. Still have a pam 33 and CR pam 48 somewhere. These guys could do with copies to learn how to safely work round that gun kit, i am sure your aware it has been a killer in the past. Fear Naught.

It's really weird seeing it without turret baskets or the Stillbrew kit. And, as an aside, don't bounce the throttle like that when it's cold. You'll fvck it. Let the fvcker high idle after start until it's properly warmed up, a few blips to clear it, and then just mildly cane it. It's a late build (isn't it?) so it should cope best with that.

This video brought back so many happy memories of a great time that set me up for a successful career, all manner of daft stuff, turret shop, test track, good friends and the faces of so many great people who are long gone. Be careful driving about with the gun out of the transit bracket (gun crutch) or without the the H30 going, turret in non-stab and the metadynes running . You can break the elevation gearbox. Bit of trivia, did you know the last British Army exercise with Chieftains was in 1995 on Salisbury plain, by then some regiments already had Challenger II and 1RTR still kicked about in Chieftains! just remember to be careful and to try not to hold down the break pedal to long as otherwise the brake accumulator has a tendency to over pressure and break. Then you lose the breaks - from an ex-chieftain driver who did this on a slope at the Warminster POL point which is on a slope! lol crashed right into the tank in front, my commander was not to happy! lol

Turret has 2 modes, apu running and full gun-control powered up and stab engaged. Or, battery only which does traverse only and no up/down. The rubbing strips are to prevent damage to the gun because the control limits aren't engaged on batt only. Be VERY careful to have everybody clear because it moves VERY fast. I seem to recall at the back of the turret next to the commanders seat is a batt emergency switch that needs to be operated to switch from batt to full house. From memory, the traverse and elevation motors are the same, but are bit of a pain to change. I say that as again, from memory, we used to get quite a few that were burnt out/locked up. The L60 had a bad start in life when the MOD said they wanted it to be truly multi-fuel capable for use anywhere. But the cylinder liners for the directly opposed pistons were devils for leaking and causing hydrostatic locking. You may want to look for a load bank to keep that donkey engine in good fettle, they’re devils for polishing the cylinders with light loads.

@@snifflytooth Exactly. Another time we got effed by the yanks. Other big example that springs to mind is 762 NATO round. The whole world knew intermediate was the way to go but no, don't like weedy stuff 'cos we are Murican and bigger is always better... then they change their minds and move to 556 a few years later. Oh, and of course, them withholding nuclear technology post war after we were instrumental in developing the bomb in the first place. Mmm. The more I think about it the more examples keeping coming to mind. Odd, that.

@kalicom2937 2 жыл бұрын
@Jervis Fitzroy In machine guns and the L129A1. The L85A series use 556. As you well know. And the EM-2 used an intermediate round. As you should know. And EM and L85 were / are select fire. The L1A1, on the other hand, was semi-auto only . Would you like to hazard as guess as to why?
@kalicom2937
@kalicom2937 2 жыл бұрын
@Jervis Fitzroy You make no sense. BA preferred select fire. Hence EM2. Intended to replace the Lee-Enfield and the Sten / Sterling. US insistence of high power round forced them to FAL, which was uncontrollable on full auto, hence no full auto. The US figured they had fucked up and changed, leaving the BA with a full power round they never wanted. They always wanted something lower power than 762 (280, in fact). They even played with even smaller calibers during the early development programs for what became L85 (4.5mm, from memory). Anyway, FAL is just another example of a weapon system being adopted not because we wanted it but because it was what the US insisted on (like multi-fuel engines) - and then they changed their minds.....
@kalicom2937
@kalicom2937 2 жыл бұрын
@Jervis Fitzroy Then you were sold a line of horseshit because select fire was an objective of the BA when EM-1 and EM-2 were under development. EM-2 was formally adopted in to service as Rifle, No.9, Mk.1 and un-adopted as the US insisted in 762 round and the mods to EM-2 were not successful. FAL was originally designed for the same round as EM-2 (the Belgians also thought that .27 was the way to go) but was re-chambered in 762 to meet the demand of the US. Has it never occurred to you why EVERY modern battle rifle is select fire? AK and derivatives? AR platform? LA85 series? FAMAS? AUG? I could go on and on and on..... Hell, the only semi-auto that immediately springs to mind is the UK L129A1 Sharpshooter (from LMT) - which is a designated marksman rifle in 762. Not a battle rifle, a DMR. No, the US fucked us over (again) and you spin it like they did us some sort of service. Open up and say aaaahhhhh.

Usually the white smoke was caused by a coolant leak.

That engine is actually bloody good it was the fact that people were working on them that didn’t know what they were doing and what ever you do when you change the oil filter make 100 percent sure it’s not leaking and you only have one seal on the filter or you will be pushing it out the workshop and watching the pistons relocate themselves from the engine block check all supercharger seals also
@paralogregt
@paralogregt 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you got your info from but the engine was garbage and it was only the 13 Alpha Sundance engine that was ok and that one was about the last MK of engine produced. And the unreliability of the engine was not caused by REME mechanics. Ex REME A Mech. This one looks like it is a good engine as it is not smoking much.

@@paralogregt 100% agree. The L60 was a piece of underpowered junk. REME VMA 75-88. As I recall, while filters were changed, the oil was never changed or scheduled for any servicing change as its enormous capacity for burning oil (more like a total loss 2 stroke motorcycle oil system than actual pressure fed system) meant it was a constant replenished and topped system. Those engines (of my era) leaked engine oil like a seive. On exercise we would throw shovels full of dirt over the engine to dry up the oil and try to then be able to trace where the leak originated, often the huge main front crankcase cover which was sealed with silk thread and Wellseal. The other major failure was the liner sealing to the block where a lot of the exhaust smoke originated and on exercise crews adding multiple drums of coolant at days end . I seem to recall we were allowed to add a maximum of 15 bars of Barseal (coolant leak sealer), known as 'dogs shit', to an engine cooling system while on exercise, any more would block the radiators.

The drivers gun switch, the toggle switch directly in front of the drivers position below the hatch should be set ‘down’. There’re two reverse gears. The chieftain can ‘neutral’ turn, select neutral, give her plenty revs and pull either stick. NEVER 1/ manoeuvre the chieftain whilst the gun is out of the cradle with the metadynes off, it’s very hard on the turret gearing and 2/ don’t swing on her barrel, for the same reason. Always park up with gun rear, over the decks, so you can check the various levels ‘before’ starting up (first parade).

Great video . You guys certainly enjoy a challenge and seem willing and able to tackle the technical problems on the vehicle. What I can’t get my head around is the Chieftain’s terrible reputation for engine trouble ? Why on earth would the MoD allow an unreliable engine to be used in the first place ?

It was a NATO requirement at the time the Cheiftain was designed, that the engine had to be multi-fuel compatible. But if you design something to do everything, it can't do anything well. So we ended up with an engine that had to be removed from the tank and have several hours of work done before you could switch fuels, and was dog rough and functionally only ever used one fuel as a result. Meanwhile, every other NATO member just ignored the rule and created single fuel engines, and then the rule was dropped shortly after.... I don't think even Rolls Royce could have saved Cheiftain.

@David Russell. David the MOD had no say in the matter. Leyland we’re going under. The government propped them up by giving them the contract for the engines. All political as usual. Supposedly a multi fuel engine! Same as the APU, (H30) both two strokes. Multi fuel? It would have taken ages to make them run on anything other than Diesel.
