You know I read that Rhold Daul was expressing the exact theme and idea of some grownups mistreating children harshly but some still good at heart. He was beaten and punished a lot by a lot of teachers at boarding school. But he still saw goodness in grown ups too.

It was so heart warming to hear how they supported Mara Wilson since her mom was dying of cancer, letting her stay with them, even going so far as to arrange a special screening for her so she could see the movie before she passed.

I read about that. Danny and rhea were, snd still are, great people in real life.

It's also one of his favourites that he ever directed (and understandably so)

yeah, it is so strange that as kids we think that life is going to be easier since we would be old enough to get things done but no. The older we get the more responsibilities pile up and life becomes kinda different and difficult. And it becomes important to not only look for your regular health but mental health as well since that starts to become a thing too. I just finished my studies and will start my first job in about a month, so I can feel that "funtime" is slowly ending. At the same time I would like to use it as a chance to constantly improve myself, becoming a better man, a better boyfriend and maybe one day a good husband and dad.

Try to find that awe at the world again and sometimes look at the world through the eyes of a child again. Many joys and wonders are waiting out there. :)

@@ginafromcologne9281 As you get older, it becomes more important to stay in touch with children and young people. I'm 72 years old and don't have any grandchildren, so I joined Big Brothers last summer and now spend time with a little boy at the local elementary school during the week.

Like him way better as the narrator then Harry, I would say at least Mr Devito is a great kind man and a great uncle figure to Mara that’s such a great relationship for too legend actors indeed but still well done Mr Devito this is one of the best 90s films every made just like Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, The Lion King 1 and The Lion King 2 Simba’s Pride and Saving Private Ryan and also Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2 and Madellaine mustn’t forget that great 1998 film too indeed!

Danny was not only the narrator but also one of the actors and he was the director and creator of the movie and his real wife played his wife in the movie.

He and Rhea helped look after Mara who’s mom was battling cancer at the time the movie was being made. She died before the premiere and was posthumously mentioned in the credits

Spoilers Belle is really Matilda's great great great grandmother. She wrote many books that were passed down throughout the family. Over the generations the books were divided up amongst the heirs of each generation until Matilda's mother possessed only 1 remaining book. A children's book written by Belle about a little girl named Matilda, who went on a great adventure to find a magic library with books that told her endless stories. Matilda's mother loved the book as a young girl, and in a moment of epidural induced clarity that she really was a shitty person, but wanted her daughter to be better than her. So she decided to name her daughter after the protagonist. Harry who is disappointed that Matilda is a girl, doesn't care what the child's name is. Matilda stumbles upon the book tucked away in the attic at age 3, her first real book. The magazines haven't held her interest, too many fake looking people with plastered on smiles; but this book, this beautiful book, with it's pictures still vibrant in color, the calligraphy so beautiful. This book calls to her very soul. She sees her name on the cover "Matilda's Library" and she knows she must learn to read. Great great Grandmother's words echo through her mind, introducing her to the idea of a "Library", inspiring Matilda to go out into the world in search of this magical place.

@@gaynzz6841 I live alone unless you count pets and have been since age 26 when I purchased my first house. And I filed a tax return for the first time when I was 18. I definitely don't know how to do everything but I reiterate: I doubt 6-year-old Matilda knew how to change a flat tire or file an insurance claim. Most people can dress themselves, make a simple meal, and make a several block walk to a desired destination like Matilda did well before their 30s.

Unfortunately the treatment Matilda endured is pretty common. It generally is allowed because adult DON'T say anything. Take the librarian for example. Yes she is kind to Matilda, but she sees this girl walk in alone for weeks, spending all day there, and she has interacted with Matilda enough to know that she walks to/from the library each day. She doesn't call CPS, the police, or anyone. When Matilda suddenly "disappears" bc she went to school. The librarian doesn't call 911. Thousands of children are murdered by their parents/caregivers, and hiding the evidence when no one is noticing a kid missing anyway, is sadly very easy. I'm not saying the librarian is evil, neglectful or anything else, in fact she's human. She did what so many adults do when they see a kid being mistreated, they look the other way (especially in the 80's-90's when this took place). The adults don't want to rock the boat, pry, and are afraid of what worse fate awaits a child in the foster care disaster. Kids who are way too mature for their age are often victims of neglect and abuse. They've learned that adults can't be trusted so they rely on themselves. So if you interact with a child who acts a bit too much like Matilda know that your one call could make all the difference.

But in this movie, it's the opposite. Matilda's parents don't like it when she reads books, but they like it when she watches TV. Books give you knowledge and help you to improve your speaking or improve your language. That's why it's good to read books. I am not a bookworm like Matilda, but I read books that interest me. But don't worry. Such parents like Matilda's parents are very rare people. Such people may not come in your life.

@@londonofficeuser I get what you're saying but I'm going to disagree heavily on parents like Matilda's not being common. I've worked in child services, and my own parents were closer to the wormwood's than one would like to admit, though I never had superpowers. After over a decade of working with parents and children from a variety of social/economic, ethnic and generational backgrounds, it's clear that the wormwood's aren't that rare, and don't even rank that bad when compared to some of the monsters I've seen. If you can't imagine your own family treating you so poorly then count yourself among the extremely lucky ones. Most parents don't outright try to kill their children, but at least half of them don't really care or want the kid. They had the child out of obligation, selfish desire, bad circumstances, or truly did have an initial desire before conception, but the reality set in, and very few "rise to the challenge".

@@millersam07 No, that's false. I have seen that many parents are loving their children and taking care of them, including my parents. The wormwoods are a bit rare. Trust me, most parents are loving and caring to their children. Only some very evil and bad parents don't want the child. However, this is rare. The reason why some parents don't want children is because children are troubling them a lot, children are wasting their money and are not listening to them, etc. In some cases, it's the children's fault, but not always.
