Fun fact, during the table dance scene Mara was nervous about doing it, so Danny had the entire cast and crew dance along with her behind the camera.

Matilda is based on a book by Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factor, BFG, Witches, etc). A musical came out on the West End around 2011 and then came to Broadway. The upcoming musical movie is based on that musical

What's unique about Matilda in particular, as a smart school-aged character, is that none of the other kids tease her for being smart. The adults are awful, but at least Matilda is able to make friends with kids her own age.

Just a note on something people keep getting confused. The new musical movie is from the 2011 stage musical wich is taken directly from the book that this movie is also taken from. All this to say they are different adaptation paths and the new musical should be seen with fresh eyes and not as a remake (although the overall story I basically the same).

Danny Devito also made it possible that her mother could see the movie before it came out. So she would see it before she died.

There was a stage musical on the West End and Broadway called Matilda. That was adapted from the original novel by Roald Dahl, not the 90’s film. The Netflix musical movie Matilda is an adaptation of the stage show.

One little tidbit that most people miss: If you watch through all of the ending credits you will notice that Roald Dahl's daughter Lissy is given a credit. Remember in the movie that miss Honey's doll that Matilda rescued is named Lissy doll. Lissy Dahl - Lissy doll.

This is a nice movie, based on a book (with the same name), by Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). The actress who played the principal also acted in "Harry Potter 3: Prisoner of Azkaban" as aunt Marge. As for your question, Delores Umbridge is worse (she afected more people, in worse ways, plus she was bigoted to the extreme).

This made me think that the narrator is actually her dad in the future who has finally realised how special his former daughter is and probably regrets for not seeing it. Just fan theory, not sure if that was the intention.

Actually while the person narrating is Danny Devito the point of view is Matilda. So it's Danny's voice but it's her speaking.

Oh man, I've watched this movie so many times. Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are just a riot as the Wormwood's. (P.S. You should absolutely watch the Danny DeVito directed dark comedy, Death To Smoochy! Robin Williams and Edward Norton, amongst some great others; very funny movie!)

They are releasing the movie adaptation of Matilda the musical on Netflix in December and I'm so excited! The musical is based on the book rather than this movie adaptation and is brilliant. It's been running for over 10 years in the west end

I’m very sceptical about it as I found all of the Roald Dahl movie reboots so far (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG and The Witches) have been disappointing.

@@ThunderForce2000 but this isn't really a reboot. They're making a film of the musical not a new version of the old film. Plus it's not really reliant on CGI in the same way. And the musical is already established and brilliant

I still wonder what she does with her powers later in life, entertainment, heroism, rise to power (she has the smarts to help) or just to help daily tasks.

In the books, she loses her powers as soon as she gets moved forward a few grades, because all that extra brain power just goes to studying.

What I don't get is why she was protecting her dad from those investigators by stealing the tape from them.

@@DanGamingFan2846 If I had to guess, Matilda's big on fairness - she only "punishes" her parents and the Trunchbull when she feels they deserve it or when they're trying to harm someone, and none of the things she does are as permanent as going to prison. But the cops were breaking the law by searching the garage without a warrant. Even though her father was a crook, she didn't think it was fair if he got caught by underhanded means (two wrongs don't make a right). Not to mention, the cops then threatened to put her in an orphanage just before she stole the tape - THAT was the last straw. She knew her father would get caught eventually, but it wouldn't be by those two clowns.

I love this movie! If you want to see more of Miss Trunchbull and Danny DeVito, I HIGHLY recommend “Death to Smoochy” it’s an underrated gem with Robin Williams, a hilarious dark comedy and one of my top 3 movies ever!

I loved the book as a kid; was in high school when the movie came out and still loved it :). But at the time the only thing I recognized Miss Honey from was Schindler’s List, so that was quite the tonal shift.

I love this movie so much! It's one of my favorites as a kid. The story behind Danny DeVito taking care of Mara Wilson It's so sad but sweet. Her mom was really sick and DeVito and Rhea Perlman would watch Mara and take care of her while her mom was in the hospital. Danny DeVito also had her mom be able to watch the movie before she passed

as a child i always wished i went to this school i woulda had fun i didnt take shit from anyone i woulda had fun then told my mother she would believe me then my grandfather would show up at the school with a shotgun XD this was the 90s shotguns at schools were not a big deal back then

At the very least, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" has always been very popular in the U.S., although part of that may be due to people seeing the popular classic movie adaptation and then going back to read the book. (I personally read the book first, though.)

well umbridge never threw a kid out the window but she did have those quills that hurt the children so i think they maybe equal pam farris who plays this trunchbull was in harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban as aunt marge so the real question is whose worse her or aunt marge maybe her cause aunt marge never physically touched harry lol

Because Ms Trunchbull is so over-the-top villainous, I definitely hate Umbridge more as she feels more real. Then again J.K. Rowling is an over-the-top villain and she's a real person, so who knows?

I think Umbridge is a more believable character, which rightfully makes us hate her. For me, this movie is sometimes too difficult to watch with just how abusive and horrible the adults are in an overdramatized way.

For multiple reasons, I'd never want to see that fight. Matilda has better control over her powers but properly motivated Carrie could be forced to use hers in a way Matilda hasn't learned to yet.

I would say Carrie, she possibly had that ability since she was a child. She even killed almost everybody at the prom after being humiliated. And she straight up looks creepy

i like how you said that one of the reasons you want to love this movie is because danny devito was nice to the lead actress who lost her mother. Kind of an insane statement to evaluate a movie on those terms..
