Fun fact: the movie is based on the book The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. I don’t remember everything, but I remember that in the book, Pongo’s mate is named Missis. Once the puppies are born, the humans worry she won’t be able to feed them all and search for another dog to help. They find another dalmation who had recently given birth and bring her in to help. They name her Perdita.

Sometimes when puppies are born they need physical stimulation to take their first breath, so when Roger is rubbing the puppy he's actually helping it to breathe. CPR does work, but you should give rubbing a chance first.

I read an article that said that Pongo & Perdita had 8 boy puppies (Lucky, Patch, Rolly, Freckles, Fidget, Dipstick, Whizzer, & Thunder) & 7 girl puppies (Penny, Pepper, Jewel, Two-Tone, Cadpid, Purdy, & Spotty).

The original book was published in 1956 and this movie was actually released in 1961. The scenery and vehicles in the movie reflect that time. The live action remake, with Glenn Close is set in much more modern times and the story updated accordingly. I haven't seen the Cruella movie with Emma Stone but I have watched the live action movie and I recommend it. It's a fun watch. In the original book, there were 97 puppies, not 99. Pongo's wife couldn't produce enough milk for 15 puppies, so they searched for a canine wet nurse. They found one and she was the one that they named Perdita. She was found on the side of the road, exhausted after searching for her own litter of puppies that her "pet" had taken and sold. When Pongo and his wife returned with all of the puppies, Perdita's litter was among them. She was also reunited with their father, a Dalmatian named Prince, and the two were relinquished to the Dearly's by their owners and became a permanent part of the family. The book also has a sequel, but, to me, it's not as good.

If you liked this, Eric, you might enjoy reading the book. In the book, Lucky is the ringleader and the smartest puppy (named for the horseshoe ring of spots on his back); the one that Roger saves is named Cadpig (she is the smallest and the avid tv watcher); and in addition to Roly Poly, there is also Patch (born with a large spot over his ear, instead of starting off pure white; also the strongest puppy, and particularly close companions with Cadpig). Also in the book Perdita is a stray whom the Dearlys take in to help nurse the puppies- since 15 is a lot for one mother dog to deal with; the mother dog is named “Misses”. And the cat, Tibs (full name Pussy Willow, but that is a bit long for common use) is actually female.

Yes, the live actions are recommended to watch. You mention Hugh Laurie, but the stand out actor in that is Glenn Close. The one and only Disney live action worthy of it’s predecessor.

Roger performed CPR on the puppy, practically rubbing it to either make the lungs free or get the heart beating again. It's not always successfull but it could make a difference. This puppy is Lucky, the pup that loves the television. He even has spots on his back in the shape of a horseshoe:)

If you liked this one, you should check out Lady and the Tramp (if you haven't seen it already). Doesn't have a main villain like this one, but it's got the same kind of charm and interesting dog POV that this one has.

My favorite tidbit about the 101 Dalmatians comes from the first time I got high. I sat down while this was playing and I noticed something about Lucky. He has a horseshoe of dalmatian dots on his back. When the Disney store was in business I looked for Lucky and sure enough he always has a horseshoe of dots. My guess is that he's the 15th puppy, the one Lucky to be alive.

I often use Rolly's line to apply to my dog - he may be like 8x bigger, but he's always hungry XD

The live actions Glen Close movies are fun, as is the reimagining origin with Emma Stone. It’s funny that 101 Dalmatians has produced actually entertaining live action counterparts.

If you're interested in seeing more of Cruella de Vil, then I highly recommend the first live-action adaption staring Glenn Close, she was phenomenal in that film. Emma Stone was amazing in the other film and the fashion's were spectacular, but I still prefer the one with Glenn close. (Also, please don't be too offended when I tell you, you made a small mistake. The original 101 Dalmatians wasn't released in 1973, it was released in 1961)

This is a favorite of mine. It's a good adaptation, but I do recommend reading the book. One of my favorites to pick up and reread even decades later.

You should definitely watch the live-action version. It gives you a lot of backstory on Cruella.

like some comments already here, I would highly recommend the live action version too. Glenn Close is fantastic as Cruella and this most likely unpopular opinion but I prefer the live action (though of course the OG also has stuff I like more than the live action)
