What’s happening in this movie clip?
The principal (Pam Ferris) forces Bruce Bogtrotter (Jimmy Karz) to eat an entire chocolate cake in front of the whole school, after blaming him for stealing her cake.

Cookie is always my favorite part in this scene. She's only on screen for a few seconds but she delivers two very funny lines consecutively with excellent diction. I still regularly say "entire confection" bc of this scene lmao

Yeah lol. How R.D wrote however he usually left the audience wondering whether such things were true literally or figutivly. I think what made it even more gross is how the chocolate cake looks alongside how the cook looks (literally she’s sweating and looks very dirty) then she wipes her nose and face with her hands. Aint nobody want to eat that cake. If you see the recent Matilda film, the scene doesn’t look as bad or gross because the cake looks a lot more appetising than the 1996 film. I think they really nailed it on the former film than the most recent one, especially with trunchbull

To me Pam ferris was the better Trunchbull she never over did her parts she knew how to play a teacher who could control her students and the cake part shows she was willing to keep Bruce in line well Emma thimpson was never that great as the Trunchbull as it just one of her roles she overplays to much

I always wondered how all of those kids' parents reacted to their 5 hour detention after school. Seeing how Matilda's parents didn't know where she was made me think that they either didn't get a phone call about the whole thing, or if they didn't bother listening as soon as her name was mentioned.

Exactly. It is never good to give so much of cake to a small boy, he could have fallen sick or got diabetes. Miss Trunchbull should be punished for giving so much cake. It is okay to give one small piece of cake, but giving an entire cake is not okay at all.

Back in 1991, teachers in my middle school would hit kids and get away with it, scott-free. It was bullshit, but these things really did happen back then. My grandmother got it worse simply by being left-handed. She'd get her hands smacked with a ruler JUST for simply being left-handed.

Boomers never stopped spoiling millennials, ever, we were the luckiest kids to have them around growing up, but maybe we were also strong and smart enough to see they weren’t bullies or “bad adults” like other generations claimed, however maybe this is why they say millennials and boomers are very similar lol, anyways I will always stick to the fact that boomers took GOOD care of us. For example Matilda’s parents might look bad but they were giving her freedom to be herself and read books even if they didn’t understand why, and her parents were also boomers

Danny DeVito said that when they were making this scene, they would cut the camera, and make the kid spit the chewed up pieces of chocolate cake into napkins and paper towels because the actor who played Bruce hated chocolate in real life. DeVito said that even though it was pretty gross, it was still a fun scene to do.

I've loved this movie from when I was a kid. ❤ But, in my perspective, what I think is that an angel from heaven whispered in Matilda's ear to cheer him on, and got everybody cheering him on as well. And that was a good thing!!
