@@elwolf8536 It's hard to imagine in the age of the internet how -poor- the flow of information was back then. There weren't even guitar magazines yet. All you had was what you learned from the people in your immediate location. For example, around that time I was offered a used Tobacco Sunburst Strat with a maple neck. I didn't buy it. Why? Because the strings buzzed. I didn't even know you could adjust things like that! My biggest regret is the Fender Bassman head and cab I bought, probably for around $50 or so. I was psyched to have a real Fender amp. But all the Fender amps I'd seen were black. This one was brown Tolex. ...So I spray painted it black. Just shoot me, okay?? A vintage Fender Bassman in brown Tolex! Then I sold it. Hey, I'm a guitar player. This is a bass amp. I should get rid of this thing and get a real guitar amp. Luckily, I never did sell that 1970 Gibson Les Paul Standard... and still have it today. Also, one of the cheap used amps I bought was a Hilgen, from a small amp company in New Jersey where I lived. I kept that, too. It still sounds amazing, with creamy breakup and very sweet distortion. The circuitry is all hand-wired point-to-point -- not even the "turret" system, but genuine point-to-point like boutique amps of today have.

I feel ya bro, my first " real" guitar was a 65 Fender Mustang, played through a Fender Bassman....sigh

Possibly the finest tone ever. I do love P90s on a 50s Les Paul goldtop, but that aside, I don’t think much else can compete with the tone of a 50s LP Junior (or Special). It’s the ultimate guitar tone, in my opinion. Took me years and years to figure out where that holy grail tone was coming from.

I had an old Univox Les Paul copy that I played through a beat up brown face Bassman head with it's 2/12 cabinet. I would kill to have them both today! Killin' nasty sounds!

Still have mine… but it’s the non reverb ‘64 Princeton. Bought it for $125 in 1982 from original owner. Love. It.

Memories. 13 years old.. My second bass a mustang, and a Sears Silverstone 150 watt bass amp with a bad ground that bit me occasionally /-), I added 2 2x12 jbl cabs with a 9volt power booster and a fuzz box , and everyone wanting me to play smoke on the water. Kids, NEVER get rid of quality guitars, save and get the next guitar you want, don't trade them in. Just sayin.

I just found a 65 MM just recently

Fast forward 2020> As it went back in 1974 I traded in the amp and guitar on a Fender pro and a Ventura 335 when I got my 1st pro gig band. So it was lost to time. But never out of my heart and soul. And after a 40 yr music career I gave myself a final guitar purchase. Joining my 61 SG Jr and my workhorse 70s Les Paul is my exact first guitar reissued in 2005 .this Melody maker is a real blast from past. I paid 500

According to a Reddit post about the same issue, it's mold. They say it often grows on rubber wires but not as often on plastic ones.

$120 in 59 was like $1200 in today's money 🤑 so expensive for that price you could have bought a Gibson, the thing is John Lennon loved Epiphone in the 60s as it was not like Epiphone of today back then it was as revered a brand as Gibson

Yeah, mine is a 64 black tolex non reverb like Mike Campbell's with the HEARTBREAKERS. He runs it with a Deluxe Reverb. I'd like to know how he hooks that up. 🙏😷🎵❗👀

@@gtrjay55 He probably uses a Lehle switcher or something like that I use an old stereo Ibanez AD9 and run it with a Tone King Gremlin head w 1/12 TK cab EL34 in the Gremlin gives me 6V6/EL34 tones mixed w a touch of tremolo from the Princeton I haven't used a new amp in quite a while I'm really impressed with the Tone King It really makes all my guitars and FX just sound better and w a good attenuator to boot

That's a good point. If he was really trying to pass it off as a real Gibson he would have tried to do it in a more authentic way. I once had an old Fiat when I was stationed in Germany. In a very round about way it resembled an old BMW. The basic shape.. So I got a BMW logo, and put it on the car next to the Fiat name. I used to call it my Fiat-BMW. It got some laughs. Which is what I was looking for. Some of the older Germans didn't appreciate the humor much, but the younger ones did.

I think it has to do with stage volume. Everyone uses quiet stage volume and a loud PA these days. Or maybe there are just a million more bedroom players. I love the small amps like Champs.

@@Les537 Agreed. I sold my Deluxe in 1970 and bought a Twin that I still have. A few years ago I got tired of lugging the Twin to gigs and rehearsals and bought a Deluxe Reissue. I came full circle and the Deluxe is my main amp again!

I'm 37 and started playing in the early 90s and can not believe the changes I've seen in gear. Back in the day a peavey rage 158 was the go to practice amp and it sounded like hot trash. They were about a hundred bucks used at the pawn shop. Last year I mic'd a black star Idcore 110 for a gig and was getting compliments on my sound... I paid a hundred bucks for the Idcore delivered to my door.

I'm almost convinced those are original speakers now, or its a very weird coincidence 🤔 lol😅

Didn't the date code suggest that the Speaker was 1967 (if I heard correctly), so who knows what went on ... (Checked 2:44 says thinks it's a 1967 Speaker ...)

@Bobby Murphy I have never owned an Epiphone but the ones I have tried are definitely around the same quality as a MIM or American Standard Fender. In my opinion they are way better than higher quality Squier guitars.

@Bobby Murphyepiphone is suffering from the legacy of old where their guitars weren't bad but weren't good either. This mostly changed when Gibson opened their own factory in China nearly 20 years ago to have better control over quality. That was a big risk that paid off. The probuckers certainly are the real deal in terms of paf sound it's more vintage sounding than burstbuckers which have a slightly more contemporary feel. Both are outstanding pickups. The big change was epiphone staring to use nickel silver for both covers and backplate. Epiphone even sell them for around the same price as burstbuckers. They even make custom versions like the ones used in bonamassa black beauty and slash signatures. The black beauty got stellar reviews for good reason.

That's a very good tip you can use a incandescent bulb also as a limiter. It's called a light bulb limiter. Agree that epiphone is one hell of a find.

Hey, the newer ones are still cool guitars. I noticed the Coronets and Wilshire new models, had a price increase over the last few weeks, I was going to get one, but I've got my Gibson with a P90, and a Epi Wilshire, from 2010. I changed the tuning machines to Grover, Sey.Duncan Phat Cat P90's, Tusq nut, and GraphTec bridge, new pots, it's a great guitar. So, decided not to get one right now, might find a used one later on. As a side note, Ace Frehley owned and played a Coronet back in the early days, I saw pictures of him with it.

@@dalesmyth7398 still killer value the wood on the ones I have seen have very nice patterning and sound loud acoustically.

You know what James... that's a really accurate comment. With these guitars you plug them in and play, no faffing about getting 'a sound' it's the thin body P90 sound and that's it. The opening to I Don't Need No Doctor is all you need to know 😃
