I have been shooting with the Ricoh GRii for a couple of months and here are my thoughts on it. The video includes more than 50 sample images.
All images are from the Ricoh and are processed unless a title says otherwise.

Your video on this camera convinced me to buy a GR ii, and for that I truly thank you. Since buying this camera, it’s accessibility has opened me up to endless amounts of creativity and I have improved greatly as a photographer. I can’t thank you enough for making this video.

Already own the first version of this camera and have started to actively use it more, it's so nimble. I'm beginning to love the 28mm equivalent FOV. Just wanted to thank you for making these videos, it's fun seeing more swedes on KZfaq geek out over camera gear and their love for photography. Keep up the already stellar work!

Mattias, this is by far the best review on the two cameras. I am waiting for the Ricoh GR 3 and praying it comes with a flip-out screen and solution to sensor dust issues. I wouldn't mind if they added a few grams for the feature. Meanwhile, I'm thoroughly enjoying my GR limited edition green... Cheers from Seoul.

I have both and prefer the X70 but very close. Iso and colour much better on X70 and the flip screen is great. X70 is just a small Xt10 or Xt-1. Big advantage of the Gr is the size , nothing beat it.

Agree with Capture One for the GR files. With LR, I was pretty much coveting them all the B&W (which look great from the GR). And a note about the pocketability: it does fit in my back jeans pocket, which is fantastic, but taking it in and out does cause some extra wear and tear on the camera.

@@ThorenTravels The X70 is as pocketable, i prefer the controls probably as i also have other Fujifilm cameras so it's more intuitive for me. Love the images i get. Plus it has the tilting screen for low down shots, feels a more solid build. That's just my preference, the GR is still a very good camera.

Excellent review, and having owned both, I also stuck with the GRii and have no regrets. Yes, the flip screen is nice, but the GRii is lighter, fits into any pocket, and can be operated one-handed. I also think the lens is a little sharper than that on the X70. But they are both great cameras and either one is a good choice.

As you know, I LOVE my GR and only wish I could bold "LOVE" in these comments :) I've always been frustrated with the manual focus!!! Only after watching your video did I see the trick of HOLDING DOWN the AFL button then changing focus with one's finger on the front dial! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Now I don't have a single complaint and would need double-bold. On what you believe is "the higher stop" you can get with the X70. The GR has a setting called "Dynamic Range Compensation" which can be set from: Off, Auto, Weak, Medium, and Strong. It works very well. I thought it would only effect JPG but it seems to flatten out the DR in the DNG file. When I feel I'm going to use it I set it to the "Effect" button. Very useful for landscape type photography. Anyway, GREAT VIDEO as always!!!! I'm been wanting to get a portable flash for this camera but can't make up my mind from what I read. Maybe you can figure it out!

End of 2020 I bought a Ricoh GR II and loved it. For some reason I sold it and ended up replacing it with a Fujifilm X70 in 2021 which I still have. Both are awesome cameras! I wear slightly baggier clothes now so the X70 fits in my pocket haha, whereas previously only the Ricoh had that advantage. The flippy screen is definitely a massive advantage, and I gotta admit I've been a Fuji boy since the X100 (with the X-T3 as my other camera) so the X70 is here to stay, especially with its retro looks. Looking back through photos I've taken, both had keepers that I love and gave me those nice feels. Now I'm tempted to look at the Leica Q2, although I'd need even baggier clothes to put it in my pocket..

As always....a great review Mattias !! It has become even more difficult to decide. :) Recently, I did try a Fuji X70. It was nice and small but I wished for more grip - in that comparison holding the X-Pro2 and X100F were much more satisfying and reassuring. Fuji's vintage look takes the cake design wise, but the Ricoh is very unassuming in that department. Have never held one in hand as Ricoh doesn't sell cameras in the UAE but the grip definitely looks ample.

Vishal Kanjani I have had a fuji x70 and liked it very much. (Eventually I will get another one). I now have the GR II and the size and weight combined with the very well designed rubbery grip make it easier to carry and shoot with than the x70. Again they are both great cameras but you would definitely like the grip on the little Ricoh and the images are fantastic.

I get more out of your videos than the usual KZfaq videos which are a variation on tech-specs. I appreciate the added personal touch, comments and aesthetic you bring to the video. Your personal insights have been useful as well as helpful (having Sigma SD2 Quattro camera but still learn how to best use). It's now Jan 17, 2018 are you still using Capture One? If so, are you using it to convert RAW files? How about the Sigma's files? Thanks again

Hey hey! Mattias! I am surprised. I (slightly) trolled your previous X70 videos a tiny bit suggesting the Ricoh, and I thought you loved the X70 so much you wouldn't quite "come over". But it won you over eh? :D There's no question they are both absolutely stellar cameras, but it's awesome to see you landed exactly where I did and appreciate the GRII for all the right reasons. I think your summation of the two is excellent - the Ricoh being a perfect "complimentary" camera, and the X70 being a perfect "one" camera. Great in depth reviews on both as usual. And of course.... welcome to Club-GR. :D

If the X100T had a tilt screen it would be a perfect camera tbh. The next GR should have one as well, it's just so much more convenient for low angle shots, I shoot a lot of shots of cats and dogs and it's hard to compose shots like that without a tilt screen.

Same is true of the GR 21mm conversion lens. Fantastic quality results, but far, far less pocketable. A lens that wide takes some serious glass to make it good - no way around it unfortunately. :)

Exactly. Maybe fix the pumping retract system sucking in dust... flippy screen. Natural performance boost (it's 2017 after all). Interface tweaks (menu/on-camera controls) and call it a day! The beauty is having a friggin' APS-C camera that's pocketable! But till then, like today, I'll keep heading out with the GX80 w/ Leica 15mm.

I own neither but both are on my wishlist.I will probably go with the GR but found this comment on Amazon about the X70 having snap focus hidden in the menu. "Lastly GR owners might think that there is no Snap Focus on the X70 but Fuji has hidden their version within the manual settings. Select the manual switch, choose your focal snap length via the display bar and bang the camera focuses to the distance instantly, exactly the same as the GR. When you switch back to auto focus mode it keeps you last manual settings saved so when you need to go back to snap, select manual and your settings are there straight away." Just thought it might be helpful.
@gearreallydoesntmatter
@gearreallydoesntmatter 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I said and showed it in the video :) But as soon as you use tha AF you have to manualy reset it again. And there is no full press snap. So in short, no, there is no "snap" in the X70 :)

In 2023, a used x70 is often listed on the big US camera resale sites for more than a new GRiii. That's just wholly absurd. Don't get me wrong, I know the x70 is a nice camera. I know the x100v is hard to get. The physical dials nd the film sims are all really enjoyable, and I'm glad to have them on other Fuji cameras. But that's just wild. Wild.

My combination of a good camera and my personal composition, is what makes me not need post processing. As a matter of fact, I try to shoot as I used to with my film Nikon and Minoltas. When there was not post processing, and your skill was what counted. (yes, call me old fashined) My very respectful opinion!
@gearreallydoesntmatter
@gearreallydoesntmatter 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree on one point. That doing post some how makes a shooter less skilled.. that goes against everything photography stands for in my opinion. With that logic I could say you just let the camera do the work for you and no skill is required. Or that changing the settings, use a flash, switch lenses is all just lack of skill. All great film photographers did A LOT of post.

For me it is a bridge that I do not want to cross. It is true that at some point the sensor will get dirty. And in certain cameras it is a more critical problem than in others and the Ricoh at the price paid for it is simply unacceptable for me. First reason to go for the X70. You can't compare the cost and risk of having your sensor cleaned to the cost of a cleaning kit. They have to take the whole camera apart, all modules, to get to the sensor clean. You can hurt the flexibles, the connectors, etc, etc. And it has someone very professional who works with great awareness so that the camera is better than before. I don't give my love to a camera that doesn't show me its sensor. Luckily there are options in Fuji with the sensor in sight and you can also practice free love with many lenses.

X70 will also get dust and if you turn it in to be taken apart and cleaned it will be under warranty if they mess it up. And that’s a big IF it even gets dust in the first place.

THZ Its not often I go out just to shoot. But I always carry a camera like the Ricoh so I can grab images from my day. On my way to work, walking the dog, etc.

Your videos are really inspiring =) thx and I hope that Ricoh GR III comes to light at Photokina 2018 (26, Sept.) If not, what camera do you recommend: Ricoh GR II or Fujifilm XF10? ...XF10 its a nice option considering price and 24MP.

I would rather have the GRii and even the X70 over the XF10.

Can you show us how to shoot from the hip using the x70 + tilt screen? I have a ricoh gr ii, love this camera, but i do feel the difficulty shooting from the hip with this camera, considering x70. too Thanks!

yup, on x70 you have to put display into 'image info' mode to make it dark and not showing what you're shooting. black screen would be better

Hey Mattias, as always a fantastic video but I love my X70, the articulated sceen wins it for me and it has seriously become my camera of choice, the colour options are excellent and I bought this camera through your initial review of the X70 s And haven't regretted it, I also use the fuji s 1 bridge camera for distance work but it's not as flexible as the X70 sensor is smaller, so the quality is not as good. I know the GR is a great camera but I'm am surprised that it doesn't have similar function as the fuji considering it is its closest rival. Keep up the good work my freind.

Thanks for the great info! I was heavily leaning towards Fujifilm (preferring the retro look and dials for everything), but the size, portability, and ergonomics of the Ricoh seems like it would fit my needs as a light and packable "go everywhere" camera better (and a friend of mine has one, loves it, and is upgrading to the GR III so I might pick it up off him at a good price). Truly a shame that the Lightroom standard profile for Ricoh RAW files isn't better though (and that the film simulations aren't available as profiles). I use Lightroom for all of my DSLR RAW files and would prefer not to have to invest in a second editor just to be able to get the best out of these pictures. Good to know before investing in one though.

Love this video! If you were to choose between the two of the cameras based on primarily editing only through your smartphone (eg. Snapseed, VSCO), which one would you pick (for both DNG and JPEG files)?

ACpiano94 Since only the Ricoh can shoot DNG thats an easy choice imo.

Is anyone experiencing a glitch with the GR2 when clicking the Menu button or the rocker to access options, when the shooting dial is in certain modes like P or Auto? The Menu screen and options suddenly disappear as if I clicked the Menu button or rocker to exit

I really want a GR. BUT the biggest downside to me. Ricoh gr have an issue stuck lens. Many ricoh gr in here got stuck lens and cant used it again. And for repair we must pay $300..its considering me to buy x70 with no mechanical lens power on off for longlife
