This camera is a bit of a legend among street shooters and here are 5 Reasons to consider it. It is a very close competitor in just about every aspect to the Fuji X70.

I remember seeing this video awhile ago and it made me want one of these. Yesterday, I was able to get the original Ricoh GR for 100 USD off a local listing and it's been a treat to use so far. Thank you for making this video. I wouldn't have been aware of this awesome line of cameras without it.

The great cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki said in an interview awhile ago that he use one of these sometimes for personal stuff. Now, he is know for liking wide lenses, so maybe that's part of it. But it's still sort of cool to know.

I recently acquired a used Olympus E-P3 with a kit lens for a steal, and that camera - while less pocketable than the GR II - is still an amazing kit even after 7 years of release. I find it much more usable for street compared to my Nikon D5300. However had I seen your video before my purchase, I have no doubt I would get the Ricoh instead of the Olympus without a second thought! Kudos!

Purchased one two months ago and I don't lament it one bit. I have been shooting street with a Nikon D600 paired with a 24mm f/2.8 and a Sony A6000 paired with a Samyang 12mm f/2, but I am now reaching for the Ricoh over 80% of the time.

Though thought of as mainly a street camera, the landscaping ability and yes astrophotography shouldn't be slept on as well. This is indeed a photographers camera. Also given its leaf shutter, you can bring this gem into a studio setting and really work some magic.

About time! I've had mine about 2 years and though I almost sold it twice in the first few months, I now shoot about 80% of my photography with it, even when I have my big guns with me. At 28mm, the GR is tack sharp, corner to corner. A prime lens on my 24mpx Sony A6000 looks soft compared to it. My guess is that it out-resolves the X70, but I'll wait till you do your test. Even if it didn't, I would want to lose the size/weight advantage of the GR, and, as you point out, the deep customization and settings. To me, Fujis are fun and cute. The GR is no-frills and all business. It doesn't care what anybody thinks about it. What I'd like to comment upon is the philosophy one must adopt to use this camera. It does not feel like a camera, doesn't look like a classic range-finder camera (like the Fujis), and takes a very utilitarian electronics approach to photography. Indeed, show it to anyone and they will think it is an old $100 point and shoot. In short, it's difficult to look or feel like a photographer or artist with this camera. There's nothing romantic about a GR. However, if your first priority is the sharpest image possible, which mine is, the camera allows you to configure it perfectly to capture that image, with a device that will fit in every pocket I have. I carry mine with me everywhere. When I take it out of my pocket, I can't go into a romantic motion of bringing it up to my eye, working the dials, and capturing my Cartier Bresson. No, I have to abstractly think through what I want to capture and set the camera up to do it. Once that is done, again, it will take the sharpest, noise-free image possible in something pocket size. Put another way, the GR is for people who want the best image in Photoshop, or some other digital darkroom. To achieve that, you must give up the fun of actually taking the photo! A Leica may give a better image (though I doubt it), but no Leica, or any camera I've used, can do all the things a GR can do in that size. The GR is the image purist's camera (like the unfortunately slow Sigmas, which is what it replaced for me). If anyone is curious, you can see many GR photos on my Flickr photostream www.flickr.com/photos/maxotics/

I know everyone is vying for the sharpness but that is sometimes the reason why I don't want to shoot with GR - it is just too clinical in terms of sharpness! I know it is counter-intuitive and I guess one can just soften afterwards a bit :)

The GRII has been my go to for pretty much everything for the last year or so. Small size, ridiculous menu options, great high ISO performace (when converted to black and white) and fantastic sensor are the big reasons for me. Currently it is the doing the rounds with me here in Saigon as I start my photography vlog and I'm shooting it in aperture priority mode, fixed at 1600ISO, 1:1 crop. Street and doc dream camera. Shooting RAW with the B&W filter on it to give me an extra idea of the tones I can expect once I convert in PS. Can't recommend this camera enough.

I generally use a high spec Nikon DSLR and I have a used X100s for when a 'professional' camera is not really appropriate. It's a lovely camera but doesn't fit in my pocket so just got a brand new GRII. The GRIII is coming out so the prices are really good at the moment. Absolutely love this little marvel. It's always with me and since it's arrival the Fuji has stayed in the cupboard.

I had the previous Ricoh GR and miss it immensely. I could throw it in my pocket and operate it one handed with every single aspect customized to my liking. The files had a classic look in color that I enjoyed but I felt like the black & white was really what shined. Let's home the next version comes out soon with a 24mp sensor, faster AF, and maybe a slightly faster version of the lens.

I know this is an older video, but wanted to comment that I owned the original GR.It lasted many years and it gave me amazing images until it died last year. I tried the X and Xiii and did not like the feel or the battery life, although the images were so pretty. Notice I said, "pretty". Something about the older version is just so special. I will be looking to get a used one and just accept it won't last forever. They are special cameras.

Amazing sample pictures. I'm actually thinking of getting one of these, believe it or not I still use an original limited edition GRD Anniversary model by Katsuya Terada as my street and vacation camera. But it draws too much attention because of the light blue graphics though and it shows it's age, it's slow and I'm limited by the fact that it only accepts SD cards to only 1GB. Other than that, it's a great camera.

MOST IMPORTANT reason to buy this camera is that it produces the most wonderful B&W images. Only the Monochrom can match its mid-tones OOC. Very Pan-X and film like. On the other hand, I am not fond of the colors coming out of the Ricoh and need to process each file, mostly to fix often weird reds. But, I love B&W and would use it solely for that. It's a disposable Monochrom.

Hello, Mattias.I own a Fuji X100F - and I love it - but I find it a bit bulky so that most of the time, it remains home and I use my iPhone for taking photos. Since Ricoh is still selling the GR mark II, I'm wondering if it's still a good choice in 2020. What do you think? It seems to be a best value for money than the GR mark III. Thank you and keep going doing so cool videos!
@Lainer1
@Lainer1 7 жыл бұрын
The lens on the Ricoh GR series is sharper than the lenses on a Fuji. It is as sharp as a 28mm Leica Summicron according to DigiLloyd reviews, and I have to agree having owned many Leica Summicron lenses. The 28mm is the sweet spot for me, 35mm on Fuji, not so much. I prefer 28mm, but that's me. I love all the features on this little camera. Only thing it needs if they make a GRIII version is EVF, maybe a tilt screen and a 2.0 lens, but I know that will make the camera bigger. So, never mind. It's pocketable. It's awesome to hold in one hand. Best APS-c compact ever. I heard there are dust issues, but I never came across them. Maybe it's from people putting the camera in their jean pockets? Lint? I don't know. The only thing the Fuji X-70 has going for it is a tilt screen. I would love the tilt screen on the Ricoh GR. I didn't know about the WiFi feature in the GRII having only owned the GR. If I could only keep one camera, this would be it.
@gearreallydoesntmatter
@gearreallydoesntmatter 7 жыл бұрын
I think the X70 and GRii are still neck and neck. Sharpness is not the end all feature imo. For example the X70 is better in lowlight and has nicer colors imo. And it has faster sync speed.

Great video! I've been using the GR (V) for 3 years, often as the only camera on vacations, really great camera and its customisation is unparalleled. Never had any dust issue, but I keep the camera in a pouch, not in my pants pocket. Did I understand correctly that you said you could toggle between auto focus and snap focus by the push of a button? You don't need to push a button. You can set and "activate" snap focus and still use auto focus. So you use auto focus with the half-press of the shutter button as usual, but if you skip that half-press and just quickly "full-"press the shutter button, the camera will use snap focus and the chosen snap focus distance.

I didn't realize that it could send raw files over wifi. That is something I really wished my OM-D could do!! I get around it by using an OTG card reader and the great free raw2dng app to convert ORF to DNG, but it is several extra steps in my mobile editing workflow that don't have to be there. I hope other manufacturers take this tip from Ricoh!

I love these little cameras. Call me old fashioned though but I need a viewfinder. I started wearing reading glasses this year and I have huge problems shooting with only an LCD. If I am wearing the glasses I can't see the scene if I am not, I can't compose the shot. It makes photography slower than it need be.

Hi Mattias, what’re your saturation, contrast, sharpness and vignetting settings for the camera’s built-in effects such as positive film, black and white high contrast and cross process? Thanks!

People, especially amateurs like me get more confuse to pick streetshooter camera..there are so wide variety with each advantage and disadvantage..but for allrounder street purpose (shoot & record video) i think I'll pick the panasonic lx100/leica d-lux 109
@vincentdelmas2792
@vincentdelmas2792 7 жыл бұрын
Clearly this one is not an allrounder. But it seems to be a real classic one. The kind " real photographers " use a backup or very portable one. In my opinion it's quite a cheap way to get to real stuff. Competitions are more like family use type.
@gearreallydoesntmatter

Yeah for video the LX100 is better, easily. But if you just want stills this and the x70 is in another league.

So photography needs "specific" to get more result. Simple example is DSLR itself, need specific lens to get more result in specific purpose/condition. Thank u matias

Is anyone experiencing a glitch with the GR2 when clicking the Menu button or the rocker to access options, when the shooting dial is in certain modes like P or Auto? The Menu screen and options suddenly disappear as if I clicked the Menu button or rocker to exit

Great video as usual. Would you agree that the GR2 photos somehow have less soul than the ones you took with the X70?
@gearreallydoesntmatter
@gearreallydoesntmatter 7 жыл бұрын
I don't know about that, they are very similar. Its a different style of editing as I like to change it quite often. But most of all, The Fuji was during the fall in Amsterdam and a wintery Sweden. So far the Ricoh have only seen grey, lifeless early spring :) Im sure there will be punchier photos in the next video.

I have the ricoh and it is a better camera than my canon 7d with L glass.

Personally I would definitely get a GR before a 28mm equivalent for my XT2. Takes up about the same space and gives me the option of a smaller camera. Plus all the cool features of the Ricoh.

Ricoh beats my canon in: Camera IQ, much better servo AF and available subject tracking AF unlike the 7d. Weight and portability, 7d is just not even close of course, Ricoh GR enables me to be photo ready all the time, no excuses. Sharpness in Ricoh is as good as my L glass that weighs at least 4 times more than the ricoh camera, glass alone. To me the ricoh is the better camera because it shoots crazy good photos (same sensor size as 7d) and the portability is unbeatable by miles. The only drawback is that ricoh is a fixed focal lenght and wide angle, so youll have to get used to that and probably end up cropping many pictures. I still think it beats the 7d

XenatR .......I'm on the verge of picking up the Fuji XT20 with the kit lens. I'll never need massive glass for my style of photography, just having everyday portability will win every time.

Dropped the ricoh (only onto my bed!!!9 Two of those retractable leaves got dislodged. Repair estimate was half the price of the camera! Thick twice before you buy one. The Sony RX100 series are nice and solid and you've a viewfinder. My gear: Fujifilm x100s + 50mm.

The x100 could break just as easily, so my tip, buy a strap ;)
@vyzant2805
@vyzant2805 7 жыл бұрын
I use various cameras. Have had a Fujifilm X100 since they first came out. Far more durable. The RX100's chunkier, feels real, but heats up. Always used straps. We all drop a camera once in a while. But I wouldn't expect a 3 foot fall on to a soft surface to cause 250 worth of damage!

Ive dropped my gr from 2m on to tarmac. In short, I never go by some guy/girls experience. I know people whos x100 broke from just holding it. Its a heavy camera sure, but very empty boxy and hollow feeling. Not solid. My point being, I think the thousands of satisfied customers is a more accurate view of the GR and x100s durability. You where simply unlucky.

I have fuji xt20 with xf35mm f2, and I love it. But I want pocketable camera that I can always carry around (for learning purpose). I'm considering GR II or GR III, but the GR III price is still high for now. Is it good enough (in terms of image quality) if I get the GR II? In your opinion, Which one should I get, GR III or GR II? Or maybe just buy xf 27mm f2.8 pancake lens for my xt20? Btw I do photography is just for fun. Thanks

got this camera some days ago and can't be happier... this camera is a dream come true. I can bring everywhere with me an apsc sharp sensor. 28mm is strange to me (I'm fond of 35mm field of view) but it's fun how well this focal length works with juxtapositions. The only thing that drives me crazy is the smartphone app for Android that's too limited in my opinion. First of all, the folder where it copies the images from the GRII doesn't appear in the Gallery app. Then if I want to share an image with an external app I can't do it because the only things allowed by the app are "share with Facebook" and "Delete". Is there a workaround for this strange behaviour? or maybe is there a way to tell the OS to read the import folder so it will show up in the Gallery?

f/0 I only shoot raw so after transferring it to the smartphone it needs to pass through Lightroom mobile anyway. After that it can be posted and shared anywhere.

I really love this camera, I have a GR myself since 2014, I took in so many places, all kind of environment and now is about to die. The only reason that holding me to buy a new one is the dust sensor issue, I mean, I have to travel in Asia soon and I will stay there for months, I can't have dust in the sensor, pay for professional or do by myself every time. I'm so sad Ricoh never fixes this issue.

Fallus You would be fine for a few months. It needs to be alot of dust before you notice and even more before you can't just remove it in post.

Depends if you are lucky, some people got their first dust spots after a month. About removing it in post.if the dust spot is in a difficult part for remove it then will be quite difficult to restore the picture.

Fallus its no biggy. You will only see it at f16 and removing is easy. All I'm saying is, dont use a camera you don't like just because a few people might have had issues with the one you do like. I use it for travel all the time, no worries.

Hi, how reliable is this camera perceived to be? My Panasonic LX3 has gone through +23.000 shots and still works perfect, so i like cameras that last. I am also curious about the Fuji X100(2011) in that regard. They`re not exactly cheap to replace/repair. Thanks!
