I remember when i was younger and starting to learn about WWII thinking "How in could anyone in their right mind follow Hitler? How could they allow him to strip away their rights and impose his will? How could they cheer his authoritative political moves? How could so many people get behind what was an obvious dictator in the making?" These last couple years has allowed me to understand this better. We right now have Americans cheering and supporting the use of military force on our own citizens for the crimes of exercising their Constitutional right... it's insane but its reality. Im not saying Trump is the next Hitler, or we are in the same boat as Germany in the 30's. But i understand how people and politicians enabled Hitler to do the things he did to gain control.

@Stella H It's true. To anyone who disagrees look up the German-American Bund. Also, Nazis from Germany held a rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939 promising to restore power to the white people of America. Thankfully, there were a bunch of sane people outside protesting their arrival.

I actually used to think the same thing reading Harry Potter. I thought there was no way Voldemort would actually be able to sway people and get them to follow him into such obvious evil, especially when it was clear his only true ideology was his own power. If there’s one thing Trump has done for me, he’s made that series more plausible.

Lol, there really is a difference although it is moot on the streets. Anyone who has been subjected to both realizes the difference. However, to use semantics to clear ones actions of any wrong doing is condemning. It continues to show the worth of the person in office and those who work directly with the person. Give me a President who owns up to their own actions and talks straight. I hate these murky waters we seem to be living in.

Wow, this is getting crazier and crazier in so many ways. Here in Chile we've experienced something similar: For a long time, there has been a structural problem which made life horrible for a substancial group of people, who are rising up to say `we've had enough´. Peaceful protesters being accused of looting and starting riots. All eyes are on the president, who reacts by declaring war to the people & sending the military on the street. There is an inappropriate use of tear gas and rubber bullets (the latter causing severe trauma to the eyes). Because of all the backlash, certain cops choose not to use identification badges. Based on what I've seen here in Chile, I predict that soon in the USA, the people will declare a dog named `cop killer´ to be a saint for always having appears at previous protests. A statue and a small shrine will me made for cop killer which get burned down and destroyed by the rightwing extremists. The latter who are not seen as extremist, but as reasonable people for being against the protests. Chile is quiet for now, because of the pandemic. With respect to this issue, our president decided to be responsable. And now that we can only go outside if we really need to, things are quiet. Although sometimes, in the evening, people are hitting pots and pans with wooden spoons from their balconies here in the capital, reminding everyone that this is not over yet. I can hear them while I am typing. I wonder what happens, once the danger of the pandemic starts to diminish. I hope we´ll be okay and make our society more just for everyone. I wish the same to you. Seeing the videos from the US breaks my heart, although other videos give me hope: It´s time for change!

Esther Lotje thank you for your words and reminder to people who are now going through what once happened in other places in the world. The moral compasses of so many Americans, especially those in power (politicians etc) are broken. This is what happens in such a society sooner or later.

Thanks for sharing, I hadn't heard any of this. The pots & pans thing is smart, it was used in Serbia to overthrow their dictator when it got too cold & in person protest numbers started to dwindle. 30 minutes of noise making each day, during the propaganda news broadcast to show they weren't listening. The Gene Sharp documentary "how to start a revolution" shows it & talks about it & other successes well. If over 50% of your population persevere, you can change things :) All the best & lots of love from Australia (where our government has actually got the message for once & is actually supporting us & democracy incredibly well through all of this)

Esther Lotje: I appreciated your commentary very much. After years of "not much happening" I'm afraid Americans have gotten complacent about issues and change. Of course, Trump has riled a lot of us up and created a huge fissure in the country between Republicans and Democrats. I am 65 and do not remember any time in our political history (during my lifetime) when there has been this type of division in our country. The chaos of Trump, followed by the pandemic, and now the flat-out daylight murder of a black man by a white police officer (kept his knee pressed across the back of the black man's neck for over 8 minutes, cutting off his air supply, unstopped by 3 other white officers) and completely caught on film has turned the people of the US into an angry hornets' nest. This is not the first time for this type of racial injustice but at last a huge portion of the country's population seems galvanized to say, "enough!". Six days of mostly peaceful protests across the country have been marred by small subgroups of violent people bent on looting and destruction of property. This has been the excuse for more police brutality and attacks on the peaceful protestors (tear gas, pepper bombs, rubber bullets) that were unwarranted. Some police here, too, have covered up their names and badge numbers in order to inflict violence on protesters. And always, Trump in the background, a hovering threat like a case of loose bowels, so desperate to be relevant when he is not. Hopefully, his sick joke of a Presidency will be over this coming fall when the US will vote again. Such a messy, stressful time. Thank you for sharing some of the growing pains Chile is suffering. When someone is struggling, whether a person or a country, it is too easy to look only inside instead of outward to see how others are faring. Too often, we forget we can learn from the mistakes and successes of others before us. I, too, hope that the future of Chile continues to improve just as I hope the future of the US is brighter than our past.

@Hello World probably BECAUSE they're protesting! If you want a democracy, you have to fight to get it & continually fight to retain it, if you don't, you lose it! Fighting doesn't always have to be physical, but as soon as a country's people take the situation for granted & assume the laws & rights they have fought for will protect them & they no longer need to actively be involved in politics as an entire people, standards begin to drop & while Chili is rated higher in Democracy & freedom standards than the US is, it still declined from 94 to 90 over the last year, so that is why they are out there fighting to turn that around & bring their freedom level back up to where they want it freedomhouse.org/country/chile/freedom-world/2020 The US btw is rated at 86 by the US based organisation that does the ratings, although tbh there appears to be some bias in play & refusals to recognise the decline, as it's stayed officially at that level for the last 2 years now, despite obvious declines in the country. All countries with high ratings see active education/information sharing & participation from large numbers of people in the community anytime attempts are made by the government to reduce their rights, generally at a grass roots level

@@vickiboyer7169 just be ready for trump to turn America's elections into one resembling Russia's, where Putin's election is a foregone conclusion & be ready to fight to fix that! The protests now are a good warm up for what could become a fight for your democracy v formal dictatorship! Use them to learn how to stand together & fight! I really did think the US was doomed & the dictatorship had become a foregone conclusion as Americans refused to get off their couches & actually fight, but now I'm really optimistic for your future, cause you've started to really understand that true power comes from the voices of the people, not from your second amendment & with that power wielded with skill, the people are unstoppable!

I spent 29 years in the military and retired last November. In that time, Mattis was the best Secretary of Defense that I served under. I was skeptical when he was nominated because it was not typical for a SECDEF to be fresh out of the military. But then I was handed an essay he wrote around 2012 about the need for commanders to give clear commander's intent so that troops at the lowest level could act autonomously when cut off from communication. I spent all of my years in command and control, so I knew that was truth. Then, instead of hollow Trumpesque cheerleading, Mattis set on his tenure by recognizing the truth of the state of readiness in our military. He sought to rebuild it to the point where it could be more ready to perform its mission effectively in today's environment -- and we still have a long way to go!!! Fortunately, his thinking still dominates in the military because there has been no strong SECDEF since his retirement. Mattis was truly the best SECDEF we had since I started my career in 1990. For these "patriots" who hate black people, any sort of racism or sexism is not tolerated in the military, and I cannot believe that I wasted my 29 years defending you and your confederate flag. Honestly, I think I would refuse to take that order on grounds of posse comitatus, or if that didn't work, my own moral grounds. I hope we are approaching a Berlin Wall moment for racism where troops say, "This is wrong and I am not doing it." Then change can follow.

I think it is the straw that broke the camel's back. It is bigger than this man's murder alone. Also the fact that it was continued so blatantly in broad daylight in front of a crowd trying to stop it for over 8 minutes showed how far it had gone that even with these witnesses they felt they could get away with it. I think that young lady that filmed it is a hero. So I say thank you to her so that we worldwide could see for ourselves how bad things have become with indisputable evidence. Even those of us who were already aware it just confirmed to us how bad things have got, but to the doubters I think a wake up call. It must have been so tough for her watching this and continuing to film and I am sure at the start of filming she did not realise how it would end. So yes my hero. InsaneLiz Yes because Cuomo let airplanes keep coming into New York Airport, at least 250 of them a day, at least for 5 weeks after Pres Trump had given orders to shut down travel from China and Europe. No Surprise then that the body bags in New York, climbed to 50% of the deaths in America. Not to mention the other fact of Cuomo forcing people suffering with covid back into nursing Homes. Which effectively resulted in the deaths of 5,000 deaths in the nursing homes alone. Yet the fake media never mentions this, instead blaming the deaths on Trump slow reaction???

When that guy keeps saying we are all part if the same consciousness I think, in a way, when we fight for the rights of our neighbors as hard as we fight for the rights of ourselves. And, a blessing to our troops who are following orders when they may have feelings that go in a whole other direction. And blessings to the troops who are refusing to do the wrong thing during these times. We need this fight, we need new laws to change the old inconsiderate downright damaging laws of yore.

This uprising is the only thing that's lifted my spirits since the dem primary was lost to the establishment goons. I AM admiring it. Yes, it's awful that people are getting hurt and killed for the cause, but this uprising is long overdue, and it's finally happening, in defiance of all the authoritarian thuggery AND a goddamn pandemic! I'm so proud of us right now. We didn't just sit staring at our screens and take it. We rose up. That means there's actually hope for humanity. As awful as it is that protesters are getting hurt, it would be worse if they'd all just stayed home where it's (still relatively) safe while the last remnants of democracy were stolen away.

Yup I think that's a pretty fair bet for what he intends, but now you've figured out how to make changes with protests, you have the power to change that. Be sure you use it! You've got good safeguards in your country, even if he is "elected" you still have the inbuilt safeguard of the electoral college, so you will have time to make it clear to them that if they appoint trump, they will destroy the country/create a civil war, so as to give them no choice but to overrule the election & choose the candidate that really won - as long as you all vote & make sure another candidate is the winner of course & it needs to be an absolute landslide, combined with MASSIVE unrelenting peaceful protests for the electoral college to vote against the official vote. They have to know that when the trump voters come out to protest, they will be toppled by sheer numbers on the other side that are on the streets protesting already

Too kind IMO. Most NAZI's in the Nuremberg Trials were directly instructed - Esper has not claimed the same thus his complicity is in my view evidently less obviously an action under duress. Esper seemingly conflated the narcissistic desire of a wannabe dictator with a lawful order from the Commander in Chief. Whilst he should ideally have asked about the purpose of the "stroll" and whether this was a military order before being manipulated into electioneering propaganda the only honourable option that remains available to Esper is to resign and unambiguously endorse the rights of assembly and freedom of speech. If he is in any way sincere he also has to apologize unconditionally for the role he played in distorting where the moral high ground can be found.

He was born into dictatorship. Trump is the son of a slum lord who views EVERYONE as a resource. He's a very good reflection of the powers behind him, don't you think? I'd like to think America is finally seeing the face of the powers that have secretly ruled for decades. JFK tried to stop them. Listen to his speech on secret societies and the most obvious of them all; THE RED THREAT. Russian didn't forget you America, it decided as JFK states "to send militias by night, rather than troops by day" Trump is PART of something that is trying to rule the world, I think it's high time Americans woke up and realized they are being manipulated by the Reds, and have been for some time.

God luck with that. Law enforcement agents and officers are now _covering their names and badge numbers,_ preventing them from being identified. (See link below) This is chilling. This is worse than seeing reporters physically abused and/or arrested while covering protests. This is worse than seeing peaceful protesters violently forced out of an area that they had every right to occupy. This is worse than elderly citizens being forcefully shoved to the ground. I have a huge knot in my stomach right now. I’ve been concerned, I’ve been worried. Now I am _alarmed._ This gives the 'authorities’ carte blanche to act without conscience, and _without retribution._ Our own government has officially turned against us. _It is actually happening._ *Please share this video.* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNmVqMeE3q67ZKs.html

Rhetorical questions for all Americans: If you were being detained/arrested by some guy in hodgepodge military gear with no identifying name, number, or rank, would you allow that? Would you go to a 2nd location with them? Who's to stop them? Would onlookers be confused enough to delay assistance or not help at all? If you were Russia, or any country seeking to sow seeds of dissent among Americans, would you send sleepers into both groups to incite violence, and then quietly disappear when it erupts? Trump has opened a can of worms here. This is dangerous precedent.
