All the terms coming out of people's mouth have no factual basis. Go read about cultural marxism. If the majority of whites were racists and non law abiding, do you think all this would be going on? This bad behavior is taking its toll on your own people. How many young black people have been arrested for crimes since this started? You should count your blessings and trust in God. I don't have anyone.I could blame a lot of people for things in my life, but I don't want to. I count my blessings. I am poor, disabled, have been harassed by police. This episode of "A Closer Look" really frightens me. Because of what is happening in the US. Because of the anger and frustration I see in the eyes of Seth Meyers - he looks tired and worn (sorry Seth !). Because of how fast the U.S. President is sliding down now into a very dangerous dictatorial mode. Because it's even coming very close to a civil war or - worse yet - a situation where Americans (civilians) must face the barrels of guns pointed at them by Americans (soldiers). I'm not an U.S. citizen (I'm Flemish - Belgian), but I'm very worried. I hope that the protests will lead to real changes for all citizens, for black people, hispanics, asians, ... and whites ... I hope that the U.S. will find a way back (or forward) towards a place in time where Respect, Care, Commitment will be mainstream. Hopefully very, very soon. Take care Seth. Take care U.S.. The UNITED States without the word "United" wouldn't mean anything anymore.

I don’t know the numbers (I’ll try to get back to you on that if I find any), but I’d wager that at least half the protests are peaceful... And it was one such protest that Trump dispersed with the use of teargas just so he could get a picture taken and proclaim himself “the friend of peaceful protesters.” Make no mistake, his behavior is mirroring that of a dictator, and actual dictators (ie China) are using this as an excuse to point out America’s hypocrisy in criticizing them, justifying their own crackdowns on protests. Trump’s actions are having consequences not just in the US, but globally. Chiba’s response aside, protests against Trump (peaceful, before you ask) have risen in London, Berlin, and several other cities. The world is sick of this President.

I’m watching and following this from the Netherlands. Unbelievable. And my ancestors are part to blame. We were one of the countries that stole people, enslaved them, and shipped them like cargo to the other side of the world. I am ashamed of that part of my own history and the history of my country. The BLM movement shows the enormous impact this history still has in everyday live in the USA. The solution of your so-called President astonished me to the core of my soul. How heartless can somebody be. These people were protesting police violence, your solution: more police violence... I hope that people who can educate themselves on the matter and take action: speak up, donate, sign petitions and vote for another leader. Any other leader is better than Trump at this point, so even if you are a republican normally, there is no shame in voting for a democrat this year. You have my permission to still call yourself a republican. But if you vote for Trump in the next election in my eyes you can no longer call yourself a decent human being.

Hi Anna, I am from the UK and I believe the same as you... my country also participated in the evil slavery trade and so we too are responsible for how things began and have stayed in America. Its a 400 year history that can never & never shouod be erased and like the holocaust in WW2 can never be forgotten - we have to, as human beings treat others as we would expect to be treated, we brag about diversity, equality and being culturally aware we are but in reality we haven't scratched the surface in making everyone equal nor in judging someone by the colour of their skin. Like the majority I cannot believe that the Leader of a democratic country like the USA is advocating the use of the American Military against their fellow American citizens because they are demonstrating for real and viable change and against the deaths of innocent citizens by police violence. American must must vote him out of office in November or as Seth states if he continues with his dangerous rhetoric then he needs to removed from office as quickly as possible - true sensible American politicians of all political colours must know this to be the truth of their actions.

The right to (peacefully) protest is protected by the U. S. Constitution. By deploying force on peaceful protesters, Trump sends a signal of contempt for the laws protecting democracy.

I used to think that there was hope for the Republican Party. I was going to vote in the Republican Primary this year for ones I thought would be better. Then the impeachment trial happened and only ONE of them had the spine to convict for abuse of power. I knew then there was no hope for the party because they would pay lip service and go right back to supporting the jack boots and tyranny. Well, I've had enough. No more voting for ANY of them. I REFUSE. Not in this lifetime. The party deserves to die and be cast out on the ash heap of history. I hope whichever party comes to replace them does far better at protecting individual rights and holding our government to account.

I read an article not long ago where he told the reporter that he was the best baseball player in the state of New York in high school, and could’ve ‘easily’ played professional baseball if he wanted to, but there was no money in baseball. So he could’ve played baseball with his “bone spurs” yet not defend our country?? And his father and uncle both also somehow avoided serving in the military during WW2. Like Trump getting elected exposes that many Americans feel screwed over and they are beyond anger. Perhaps rightfully so (it's just that Trump won't solve their problems, long term - at least he pretends to listen and he follows his vision, barely caring about any obstruction he might suffer). Anger over abuse and pointless loss of black lives is justified, but it has to remain rational. Looting and wrecking the property of others do you no good. Like with the Nazis in the 'other' protest group... Your message (by protest) gets diluted and many people stop sympathizing. Trump just capitalized on that and his base will love him for it. All you can do is vote. Same thing about guns and loonies. Slow changes, if only not to upset the other half of the country too much. Otherwise you get dealt an orange naked emperor.

Trump wakes up this morning and says, 'I love the small of tear gas in the morning, it smells like victory', in 68 at least Johnson has the sense to say 'I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party'. This reality show's summer season could get very high ratings, I suspect they are rethinking plans of doing a convention at some location protesters could gather. In the next few weeks I expect an face saving announcement, 'because of the danger of the spread of COVID-19 the Republican convention will be done virtually'.

I sat down to dinner with my parents last night and put this on my phone. I've had them watch plenty of Closer Look clips over the last few months, and I asked them if they noticed anything different about this one, while also telling them that Monday's was very similar to this. No pithy jokes at the top, no cutesy segue, no closing joke with a video clip used earlier in the segment, and the various obvious palpable anger in Seth's voice and demeanor. They were a bit taken aback, but totally understood it. Seth reflected exactly how we should all be feeling right now.
