In Australia (at least in my state WA) we can now apparently get tested if we have symptoms of an acute upper respiratory infection. Unfortunately doctors in my state can't do "screening tests." e.g. if a patient is about to have a non emergency heart surgery their doctor can't order a Covid-19 pre-op test. Doctor gets $20,000 fine per patient, lab gets $100,000 fine per test. If the patient does have asymptomatic/ presymptomatic Covid-19 they're taking a massive risk; as well as endangering anaesthetist, surgeon, nurses, other patients, cleaning staff...it takes one positive patient to take down an entire hospital. HCWs also can't wear adequate levels of PPE, even with confirmed positive cases of Covid-19. It isn't generally considered necessary to provide "droplet level precaution" ie goggles/ surgical masks/ gloves/ gowns. They need the next level of PPE which is "airborne precaution" as this virus has been demonstrated to spread like an airbourne virus. With suspected cases of Covid-19 they get bare minimum PPE. My brother is soon going in for massive spinal surgery (was postponed due to pandemic) and he has been screened for carrying MRSA bacteria because of risk to other patients/ staff. He will spend up to 2 weeks laying on his belly in a hospital bed after surgery. If he develops symptoms of Covid-19 (like coughing) after that surgery he's going to be in a world of trouble. But he can't get a test. The risk here is low but not non existent. He works in a hospital so is at higher risk than average population. It seems to make sense for those getting "elective surgery" to fake mild symptoms (sore throat/ sniffles) to get tested target than run the fear of developing symptoms during recovery. Especially when almost their entire spine will have been opened up to insert titanium rods and screws into every vertebra. We have few known active cases but there is still a risk. We aren't doing "sentinel testing" of random individuals to check if the virus is still out in the population. People with mild and moderate symptoms are often choosing not to get tested, rather they self isolate into they feel better. They are scared of the stigma attached. So they aren't being confirmed or contact traced. There are still cases appearing where the source of infection hasn't been able to be traced.

I do not think they have forgotten the heros on the frontline. Sending workers hard hit by the virus back into meat packing companies without safe guards and testing in place is ridiculous and disasterous. It will only cause more community spread of the virus. Unions need to demand safe working conditions before they return, or you frontline hospital workets will be at more risk care for ever increasing and overload/surge of infected people.

Afos, we're not forgetting. Non-essential workers staying home is a measure intended to protect essential workers, too. Frankly, it sucks that you haven't had regular testing and protective gear since day one--you should. Every essential worker should. You're stuck in a terrible situation. But having the rest of the population out freely mingling would make the situation even worse. I can't do a lot for the folks working at my local grocery store, but I can minimize my trips there, get in and out as fast as possible, and wear a mask while I'm in there. I can't do a lot for the doctors and nurses and EMTs and orderlies in the hospital, but I can stay home and try not to add one more case to their workload.

Beth E Yes. I know, but no one else in the comment section mentioned it till I saw this comment. And I know my exasperation about this particular topic seems out of proportion and irrelevant. And perhaps it is just me raging over a pet peeve. However, it’s like it’s a signal to me of just how far outside of reality he is. He’s not an actor. He’s not even a child playing make believe. Because both understand there’s a difference between that and reality. Same goes for getting lost in the world of a good book, movie, tv show, or video game. He’s more like a delusional mental patient having fully immersive hallucinations to me. And he’s trying to convince everyone that his hallucinations are real. Matters of the State will always come First, without exception." So Orange Foolius (Trump) and his minions in the West Wing, will get tested for COVID-19 every day, while there are a lack of tests throughout the country. He has relaxed the social distancing protocols across the country and allowed most of the States to do a limited reopening, when they haven't reached their initial target goals, and yet, both the positive COVID & death tolls numbers are still spiking upwards. Trump doesn't care about the people in this Country, nor does he show any compassion over the lives that have been lost. He only cares about the stock market and trying to save his re-election campaign to keep his control.

I live in Delaware, where we're still requiring masks in public and starting today we're allowing non-essential businesses to open but not for people to go in the stores, people can purchase stuff by phone and internet and have employees bring it to their cars. coronavirus.delaware.gov/latest-data/ This is what happens when the state follows the guidelines instead of the partisan junk that trump and his people are spewing to try to keep the poor working until they die. It's not like they can't just hire another, right? Stocks need to go up.. It's sickening. I played the outer worlds, a video game, a few months back and it had a very rotten form of capitalism. Honey Graham Bernal I don’t understand that either.. they knew we would have economic problems closing the country, and they closed it- which I agree with.. but then once the problems start happening everyone freaks out and gotta open everything. So now we’ll have big economic problems, and in about a month a crap ton more people Will be sick and dying. If we were going to close it, it should have been made worth while. It was a waste of time honestly. He makes his decisions purely based on whether he has approval ratings, so he can win again. Idk why the sheeple who follows him don’t see him for what he is.
