The Army Men series always had a loose bit of world building but travel between big world and the plastic world was almost always a thing , some games just spent a large ammount of time in the plastic world for some reason. I do like the idea that if they spend too much time in the big world they end up frozen and essentially the actual toy army men with a slightly dark idea that they are concious of whats happening around em

The funniest things in this game for me is that in multiplayer they made it so that if you take enough damage you for example can lose your characters left arm rather than just getting chunks of you blown off if you take enough damage. Yet that wasn't edgy enough for them because they don't stop there you can even get your head blown off and then run around headless while your head slowly grows back over the course of a few seconds.

If I remember correctly, in heros you started in their world, but then you go through portals every now and then that puts you into our world. The tans used the portals to bring some of our stuff to their world and the game ended up being about destroying the portals. Well atleast that's all I could recall from my younger self playing it. And the blue ones are spies. And level 2 is a bathtub.

I played Sarge's Heroes 1 and 2 on n64 and the levels were mixed with the theme :) some levels are their world and some take place in a big house, kid's room, kitchen, backyard, and toy store. This game didn't really feel out of place for me. I must admit that it does look strange seeing army men characters holding realistic guns. I'm more used to seeing the characters holding the plastic guns they had, i found it cute when they used firecrackers in Sarge's heroes 2. Overall this game is okay, I still prefer the n64 titles though. ^^"

From what I recall the reason why the tone shift is a thing in some games is because one of the games (Portal Runner) revealed that they are actually characters from toylines in the real world that contain different versions of the same characters with different backstories. Basically some of the toysets contain the old PC games universe. and others contain the Sarges Heroes version and so on and so forth So basically the dark Sarges War stuff is in a playset that is I guess edgy as shit lol

I remember this game, holy crap. Yeah I still don't understand the sudden shift to a grittier tone for sarge's war, always felt that it went against what the franchise was about (toy soldiers fighting each other with a silly gi joe esc/ early ww2 movie cliche tone) but it was still a better game than major malfunction. Definitely deserves a What happened. Also this might go unread but according to the army men "DEEP LORE" there are evidently two worlds, the plastic army men world which is basically just like, the normal world only inhabited by plastic people, and then big world which is basically the normal world where the army men are toy sized. This was established at the end of very first army men game, but aside from that I don't care to remember too much.

Oh man! I have a strangely long history with the Army Men games. Army Men: Sarge's Heroes was one of the first PS1 games I owned and later on, I got a collection of games for the PC. From what I remember: Army Men and Army Men: World War were RTS games, but you could control individual army men and play it like an overhead shooter. All of the environments were realistic WWII settings, but the characters and vehicles were all toys. Sarge's Heroes was lighthearted and tongue in cheek. It was all Vietnam era weapons and vehicles, and you went around rescuing your squad who were all war movie stereotypes - the BBQ flamethrower guy, the cowardly mine detector guy, and Sarge was like a war hero guy. And the Green and Tan armies were fighting a war in this realistic world, but the Tans found a teleporter (a giant toy) that let them travel into the real world and bring back weapons (other toys, like robots). So you would travel into the real world and be an actual army men in places like sandboxes, the kitchen, and bedrooms. Then there were the Air Attack games, were you piloted helicopters and it was an arcadey arena shoot em up. Those were a bit more serious in tone, but they were super goofy cause you'd fight off bugs and giant toys. I played a lot of Air Attack, but I only rented Air Attack 2 for the PS2. I remember it being far more serious in tone, but were kinda goofy with their missions. Like air lifting food and dropping it into enemy bases, to lure army of ants in to attack. This is the first I've ever seen of Sarge's Wae though, so thanks for the nostalgia trip!

Sarge's war was a semi-sequel to Army men RTS in the sense that it tells the same story while expanding on the concepts of molds from RTS. I believe at this time 3DO had sold the IP out of liquidation, the new company wanted to do a dark story that killed all main line characters so they could mold the franchise to what they saw fit and also Jim Cummings was far too expensive for them to keep bringing back (probably). If Sarge's heroes on the N64 was the rise, this game was the fall. The sequel to this game literately starts Sarge in a microwave being melted to death, and the reigns are handed to a random basic grunt character we've seen hundreds of at this point, then the game morphs back into a whimsically Army men adventure. its scary and gave me whiplash as a long time Army Men fan lol

As far as I know, 3DO pretty much finished Sarge's War, so I think it was always going to be dark. Also, wasn't that Sarge supposed to be a different character, since Sgt. Hawk is actually the main antagonist of Major Malfunction?
@ReaverSenpai
@ReaverSenpai 5 ай бұрын
@@AlexMrShot it always felt like a swan song in concept. 3DO did do a lot of work and are credited, but Tactical Development was brought in after Goldstar bought it i believe. the games surprisingly has a lot of lore. The PC games had a lot lore too but that mostly followed the classic sarge which i think is the same one? this game does play well to the sarges heroes, it just follows the more gritty setting of army 3D and WW2 games. The sarge is the same if you look closely you see the same bandage over his nose and the same face, it was intentional and cannon in the lore. Major Malfunction was literately the name of the antagonist for Pvt.Anderson.
