What happens when Carol (Adrienne Barbeau) reveals to her mother (Beatrice Arthur) that she has been seeing a therapist? Find out in the pilot episode of Maude!
From Season 1, Episode 1 'Maude's Problem' - Maude, a woman who believes in fighting city hall -- or anything else in her path -- tangles with a psychiatrist who is treating her daughter. When Maude learns that Carol is being psychoanalyzed, she feels this is a direct attack on her image as a model mother. Getting no help from Walter, Maude pays an unexpected call on the psychiatrist, determined to put an end to the analysis sessions.

About Maude: Gutsy, smart, outspoken, and liberal -- all are terms that describe Beatrice Arthur in the title role of the TV series that spun off from the popular All in the Family. Well-educated and upper-middle-class, Maude Findlay is the archetypal feminist of her generation. She lives in suburban Tuckahoe, New York, with her fourth husband, Walter (Bill Macy), their divorced daughter, Carol (Adrienne Barbeau), and grandson Phillip. The cast also includes Rue McClanahan as Maude's best friend Vivian; Walter's best friend and neighbor Dr. Arthur Harmon (Conrad Bain); and over the course of the series, three different maids (Esther Rolle, Hermione Baddeley and Marlene Warfield). Tough issues like abortion, alcoholism, women's liberation, menopause and politics are all fodder for the show's sharp wit and social commentary.

Just an observation as I was watching this, their acting style is pure theater. From the strong vocal projection to the staging, this feels like I’m watching a play intermixed with a few close ups to remind you of the actual medium. It makes me wonder if this was a concession to Bea’s background and a subtle way to make her more comfortable or if this a reflection of the creative team and the time when it was created.

This isn’t the pilot. The pilot aired as an episode of All in the Family, where Archie and Edith went to visit Maude for her daughter Carol’s wedding. That pilot was used to sell the series to CBS. This is simply the first episode of Maude. Often the first episode is the same as the pilot, but that’s not the case here.
@jaredjlinden
@jaredjlinden 3 жыл бұрын
@Albert Dibari Yep. Maude actually appeared in two episodes. There’s the one early in the second season where she comes to take care of the family when they have the flu. And then there’s the one later in the second season where the Bunkers travelled to Maude’s for Carol’s wedding. That’s the episode that served as the “Maude” pilot, because the Bunkers have very small roles, and the episode focuses on Maude, Walter, and Carol.

Maude, All In The Family, The Jefferson’s-it was smart television in a way we don’t get anymore. It made its point, but it didn’t hit you over the head with it-it didn’t have to. While you were laughing hysterically, you didn’t realize what you were absorbing. Even if the views didn’t match up to your own 100% - you were seeing another side through a smile. When you weren’t laughing you were being given characters and plots that had a sneaky amount of heart you didn’t expect from sitcom tv. That was the killer combo of all these Norman Lear gems. If only we could find a way to address many of these same issues today with the same level of class, dignity and humor - we’d realize there’s a lot more we have in common than we do that separates us.

I've always liked Maude. Reminds me of my Aunt Mary. Just the way she talks and looks. Think I was more interested in her approval than my own mother. God bless my mom, though. Maude was and is like the twin sister of John Wayne.

All thanks to Norman Lear and the inspiration from his wife to create this show. The episode about abortion was groundbreaking because it came out around the time when Roe v Wade passed. Also, the episode where Maude and Florida confront both of their husbands about their treatment of their wives was groundbreaking. It's also great because we get 2 different women's perspectives and experiences. While Maude may have had experiences with sexism, she's still a white woman with privilege and never had to deal with racism. Therefore, she never had to go through the double discrimination that Florida must've experienced throughout her life...

@@rebeccassweetmusic4632 - White privilege? What a bunch of nonsense. As a white person in my younger adult years, I had absolutely no money while I struggled to make ends meet and drove a car that was over 20 years old, for a total of six years. I can't tell you how many times my very street legal car was profiled by the police and I was stopped for no reason. And no, I wasn't speeding or commiting any moving violations. Some of the officers were nice about it, but others were very rude to me because of my youthful teenaged appearance. This was despite the fact that I always remained polite. Perhaps you grew up as a privileged white person. But that does not mean white people do in general. What a ridiculous concept.
@rebeccassweetmusic4632
@rebeccassweetmusic4632 2 жыл бұрын
@@finster1968 No need to get defensive. White privilege doesn’t mean you grew up with lots and lots of money. It just means that we're lucky to have not experienced racism and discrimination unlike POC. You mentioned that you've had a few encounters with the cops who were rude to you. That's one thing! However, it's another thing to be black and have the cops be unnecessarily aggressive and violent towards you. Or even shoot you. Then to have the media paint u as criminal or a thief who "deserved it." Again... White privilege has nothing to do with money. It shields us from things we've never had to experience
